But I see that sigma metabones combo for sale sometimes and just wonder about it.. but then again I also have the Leica 15 F1.7 and the Voigtlander 17.5 F.95 so I think for now I'll just swap to a prime when I need more bokeh and zoom with my feet.

Sigma 17-50 mm f/2.8 is slept on vs the 18-35 1.8. Much closer comparison to the 12-35! And if you have both a speedbooster AND a regular adapter, you get an even longer f/2.8 focal length on top.

I have owned the panny for years and it’s my Outdoor Lens and my Travel lens but I now have Primes for my ‘Photoshoots’ (pan/leica 15mm and 25mm). I have a Samyang 12mm f2.0 for my Gimbal and the Laowa 7.5 for Interiors and a Nocticron 42.5 (just because it’s amazing and it’s also really hard to justify). . . And yet (despite all that glass) I have just ordered the Sigma and Viltrox purely for the low light capabilities and the f1.3 aperture which is Wider than all the rest (except the Nocticron). Ps I also have the Panny 35-100 and the 100-300 and cannot remember the last time I used either 🤷

Loved the video! I've never tried the panny boy but I rented the sigma for a day to try it out and I was in love with the 1.2 aperture constant throughout the zoom range, not only was the bokeh beautiful but I could almost see in the dark whereas my 60mm 2.8 lens struggles in low light because of the 2.8. I own the G9 and it controls noise well but sometimes I think it's best to get the faster lenses just for the brighter image as there is a hugeee difference between the 1.2 and the 2.8. I'd love to try the 12-35 panny sometime tho and see if it can change my mind
@JonBear4 жыл бұрын
I 1000% percent agree with your comment. The fast aperture is a game changer. You can see in the dark almost to the extent that the human eye does. The jump between 2.8 and 1.2 is massive. To be fair though, 1.2 is going to give you a very fine focus line so keeping your subject in focus is gonna be a challenge. Because of this I generally stick with 1.8 for a good balance :)

I was thinking about getting a Panasonic GH5s (I will do more video than photography). Should I get a GH5 instead, because of the image stabilization? I know the GH5s does better in low light, but some other videos suggested that if I use a speed booster and sigma lens, I can offset that deficit in the GH5...? Also, what will getting the optional v-log for GH5 gain me? I think initially, I will be going out into the field to shoot videos to promote tourism, videoing myself for online content, shoot some event video, etc. In your opinion, should I get the GH5 or the GH5s, or Should I wait until the GH6 is released, so I can see if the GH6 has better features/specs for the price? Any idea when the GH6 will be released, and what the price and specs on it will be?
@JonBear4 жыл бұрын
Good question! Personally I really value image stabilization. But having good low light ability is really important for event videos because you cannot run around and set up lights everywhere. The GH5s has some clear advantages at the cost of stabilization: 1. Incredible low light capability, 2. Comes with V-log. If you're out and about doing tourism stuff, then yeah stabilization really helps but if you bring a tripod and focus on your composition more, I think the end result will be better for it. Stabilization is good, but a good tripod shot always wins. And if you really need moving shots, then you can invest in a gimbal later on. As for GH6, there are only baseless rumors. Maybe it will never come out.

That got me thinking whether i should go for a native like a Sigma 16mm 1.4..Whats your take on it?
@JonBear4 жыл бұрын
@@GeorgeMariosofficial Good question. Sigma 18-35 is definitely more versatile. It works with Autofocus but it is LOUD. A camera mounted mic will pick up that noise. But if you record audio from a boomstand then it won't be picked up. That said, the sigma prime lenses for M43 cameras like the Sigma 16mm f1.4 are phenomenal. Fast, light and reliable. Since it is native the Autofocus will also be reliable.. And if you get only the sigma 16mm f1.4 then you'll save some money since it's cheaper and doesn't require an adapter. If the zoom is not important to you, then get the 16mm f1.4. It probably serves your purposes better and it will probably become your go-to gimbal lens if you decide to expand. Hope these thoughts help!

@JonBear4 жыл бұрын
ahaha I hear the Jim Carrey thing occasionally. Always puts a smile on my face! Huge fan of Peter McKinnon too. I admire how he makes videography look fun, welcoming, and effortless to beginners. To answer your question, If I was you I'd get a non-speedbooster adapter. They're only about $30 and that's a cheap price to pay if you have tons of old lenses you want to breathe new life into. Then if you find a lens that you like a lot, you could try picking up a speedbooster for the faster aperture
@Rcschim4 жыл бұрын
@@JonBear thanks for your reply. Peter is quite a character - that's for sure! I spent a lot of time thinking about getting a used Sony A7RII with some decent lenses (full format - yay!). Better to spend the money into a new MFT lens maybe. Meanwhile for my youtubing I got the Sony ZV-1 - it's amazing how nice the AF works, it's so convenient (24-70, F1.-8 to F2.8) - even has an integrated ND filter... you prolly saw a review or two ;) thanks again and good luck - with your sympathic videos and a few years of really hard work you're destined to "de-throne" PM :) (at least you should have 100times the subbers you have now!). greets, Mario

Thank you for the warm message Mario! The full format cameras definitely are enticing. But for now the price is off putting and I can already record in 4k resolution in 10 bit. All that said it's a lot of money to switch to a format that may give me slightly more blurry backgrounds. Greetings from Japan and here's a question. What about 15mm F1.7 Summix one? I think it's the only native lens that can stand a chance against that badass sigma girl while maintaining both the bokeh and the wide angle? To tell you the truth I bought the 12mm - 35mm one myself back in the day I got my G9, and now I kinda became desperate wanting more shallow depth of field in my works. So tell me Jon, sigma or summix, which should I go for?
@theodorditrich87672 жыл бұрын

@raksh92 жыл бұрын
If you can afford both, they have their uses. Traveling with the 12-35 is so easy, and with a couple of small Olympus primes, you'll have low light capabilities as well. The Sigma, on the other hand, is better suited for dedicated jobs in low light or where you want the most shallow depth of field you can get. Even the Olympus f1.2 Pro primes don't quite give the same shallow DoF as the Sigma with a Speedbooster XL. I've carried both lenses on jobs, and also use the 18-35 for very low light plus the Sigma 24-105 for when I want more reach in better light.
@JonBear2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, even now years after getting the sigma, I struggle to find a lens that rivals it in sharpness and depth of field. The ones that have similar bokeh or more, usually sacrifice a ton of sharpness. I kinda decided that Sigma is my one and done lens. I don't need to buy anything else for my purposes

Hello John. Thanks for the video! My question is, can you get more light into the panny with a speed booster of some kind and get better low light / bokeh performance? Cheers.
@JonBear4 жыл бұрын
Hey Vince! Appreciate the question. Unfortunately, speedboosters act as adapters for bigger glass to smaller sensors. So in short, there is no speedbooster for a native m43 lens to a m43 body. Only lenses designed for larger sensors can utilize speedboosters. The most common is Canon EF- to m43. But you can also find Nikon to m43, and maybe other niche lens mounts. So you cannot make your panny faster unfortunately.

I am wondering about the math calculation. The Sigma would be 18 in an APS-c camera but larger if used in a 4/3 camera. (It was designed as a APS-c lens, not 4/3). Wouldn't you need convert the APS-c number to 4/3 first? At 4/3 it will have a larger number than it does at APS-c. I first did APS-c to full frame 18 / 1.6 = 11.25mm, (F.F. equivalent).. Then x 2 to find the 4/3 equivalent = 22.5. So the equation would be (22.5 x .71) x 2 = approx. 32mm The Lumix Full Frame equivalent would be 12 x 2 = 24mm
@JonBear2 жыл бұрын
Here is the correct math: Apsx: 18mm x 1.5 = 27mm M43: (18 x 0.71) x 2 = 25.5mm Hence it's wider on m43 with speedbooster than on apsc sensor. Gerald undone tested it in one of his videos and the math checks out 😁
@DannyB-cs9vx2 жыл бұрын
@@JonBear If you have a full frame lens and want to know how it behaves in an APS-c camera, you multiply by 1.5. But if you have an APS-c lens and want to know how it behaves in a full frame camera you need to divide by 1.5. If you had a full frame lens that was 12mm, in an APS-c camera it would behave as an 18, (12 x 1.5). in a 4/3 camera it would be a 24 (12 x 2). Why are you using the number 18 in your calculation? A lens made for APS-c with a rating of 18 will not be an 18 in a 4/3 camera. The Sigma 18-35 uses the EF mount but is made for the APS-c sensor. APS-c / 1.5 = Full Frame, x 2 = 4/3. 18 / 1.5 = 12, x 2 =24 Add the adaptor, x.71 = 17 so in Full frame equivalents the wide end of the Lumix is 24, (12 x 2), and the converted Sigma is 34, (17 x 2). Not comparable lenses

Hi Jon, thanks for comparing both the lenses. I got myself a GH5 recently. Lens choice can be difficult for this camera. I purchased a Sigma 18-35 but the setup is too heavy & noticeable in public. I might consider a 12-35mm panny as well. I have been using my sigma with a mechanical adapter only (without a speed booster). But, I'm not sure what focal range I have been getting with a non-speed booster lens. Also, is there a conversion on F-stop values as well on a MFT sensor? or they effective as displayed? thanks.

@JonBear3 жыл бұрын
Actually yes. I recently started playing with it again and realized how awesome it is. Bokeh is nice, but recently I overdid it a lot in my talking videos and it was just distracting to me. f2.8 doesn't bother me anymore. Also if you're on the GH5 - there is a neat trick to fix the autofocus by putting shutterspeed to 179 degrees and use AFC single point. Paired with this lens, it works surprisingly well. So that's another point for Panasonic - autofocus.

Excellent video Jon! I already have the Panny, do you think that getting the sigma is going to make a real difference in the cinematic look? Worth the investment?
@JonBear3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Hector! There is really no clear answer. Just preferences. I have gone back to using the Panny a lot more over the time since this video released. It's so sharp and nice and I find the Bokeh to be sufficient - and the Autofocus works great on GH5. With the Sigma you get that fast fast aperture on a zoom lens. There is a reason this lens is the go-to even for people on cine-cameras. If you want more bokeh in general, then Sigma has you covered on the main focal lengths you'd ever need for filming people, The tap to focus function works great on Sigma with GH5, but don't expect to use the continuous AF - as it's noisy and unreliable.

When using the GH5 and the Sigma 18-35mm.......any tips for making handheld shots more stable?
@JonBear4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Matt!! Actually one benefit of 18-35 is that it's heavier. The heavier your setup the more stable it becomes because of the momentum conservation principle. For anything where I am standing still, I use IS video LOCK - find it in your stabilization menu. This turns you into a tripod! It's insane. If you are making movements, I suggest just using IBIS, and holding the camera tight while doing ninja steps. While doing this, I will film in 30fps or 60fps then slow it down to 24fps in post to get a little smoother footage. I grip the camera close to my body while taking ninja steps. Make sure you also zoom completely out to 18mm. The wider you are, the more 'stable' you will seem - and applying warp stabilizer in post will be much easier! Good luck Matt!

I make short films..So I use 24fps for 99% of time.. So I need a camera which will give me the best image quality at 24fps..According to my budget I was thinking of buying the GH5 but recently i had come across GH4 which can also shoot 4k at 24 fps only at 8bit compared to that 10bit on GH5..Honestly after the KZbin compression 8Bit and 10Bit are barely noticeable.. And i also dont need IBIS as my Stedicam and Gimbal does the job.. So i was thinking strongly of buying GH4 instead of GH5 as i would spent 2 times less..Can u tell me anyother features that GH5 can do better than GH4 at 24fps(excluding IBIS, 10bit)? And should you reccomend me to buy GH4 instead of GH5 as both of them are almost same at 24fps? Thank You
@JonBear4 жыл бұрын
Based on everything you said, I agree. Go with the GH4. For your scenario, the GH5 and GH4 will be identical (minus the 10bit). The only thing I imagine you could need is a dual ISO so you can shoot at higher iso without noise. If that sounds enticing, then I'd strongly recommend a Blackmagic 4k or GH5S. But I guess the better answer is to get the GH4, then invest the extra cash in lights 👍Appreciatee the question and good luck!!

@JonBear4 жыл бұрын
Ahaha nah brother I think you're good with just the Sigma. I think either one should be good. If you really like the Panny, then maybe you might consider going for the Panny 35-100mm f2.8 - That would be a focal range that would have you covered for for all your cinematic telephoto needs. The winning points of the Panny 12-35 also apply to the 35-100 :) As for the Sigma, are you using the lens hood? I got vignetting too, but realized it was the lens hood that was the culprit so I quickly got rid of it. The monkey at 06:22 also damaged it quite a bit lol
