When I switched to mirrorless went with f/4s for my trinity. I wanted to maintain the small size and lighter equipment. Plus, the cleaner ISO range I felt comfortable. Then I got super fast primes to the “cinematic” look.

Just got my first professional camera in the form of an A7IV and was pondering for a bit what lens to buy. I was torn between the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and the Sigma MK II from this video. In the end i went for a used MK I for 800€. (The MK II will cost you around 1400€ new in germany) I hope i made a good decision

i was really close to buy the 1st one but, many people complain for dust dots into the glass that was very easy to have. Like a walk in the park was enough.. hope now Sigma fix this..

Thanks a lot for your insights! Just got the Leica 24-70mm for a good price recently for my S5II and I'm amazed by the images. If I can sell it for a price allowing me to get the new Sigma, I may do so later this year.

Thoughtful video. Yes I think that we are at an inflection point in lens design and use thanks to software improvements. My current Sony setup is to use the 20-70, and when, rarely, speed or resolution is needed revert to a prime. Yes, occasional lens changes, but the around the neck carry is light. I also must reflect that HCB did his work mostly with a 50mm 3.5 or 2.0 stating that sharpness is a bourgeois concept. BTW nice posted Japan images.

For me, the biggest decision for me is now which standard zoom do I get? Not the GM II unless I win the lottery. The DG DN II is now the value king. I don't think this is even arguable. The 24-50 G might be what I most want in a standard zoom, but the optics of the DG DN II are slightly better and the 70mm might be great for portraits/landscapes occasionally. The 20-70 G is, as you said, a goddamn unicorn. Personally not my favorite for what I'm shooting right now, but if my life ever slows down and I start actually going places I might like this lens the best. Where are you and Claudia at? Apologies if this is answered in video, paused near the ~5 minute mark.

It is impressive how much improvement it show in Sigma's MTF charts with only a few minor changes to the optical design.

Nice comments on this lens! Actually, you're spot on on the Sony system with the alternatives 16-25 G, 24-50 G: - if you have an A7R V you can use the crop factor to have similar reach. For me, weight is important since I often carry gear up the mountains... Helpful insight, really! Thanks

So it seems you prefer this lens over the S-Pro 24x70 by Lumix. How does the AF compare between the two for both photo & video? I'm thinking of going to the S5IIX coming from Canon R6 & RF 24-70. Want to make sure I don't lose anything in the AF department, especially for photography. Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks!

Hugh, just off piste a little if you don't mind so a question without notice. You have a choice of one of two cameras, Hasselblad or Leica, which way do you jump? Lenses, etc, aren't part of the consideration, it's one manufacturer over the other.
@Bayonet1809
@Bayonet1809 Ай бұрын
For the sake of clarification in advance of Hugh's reply, do you have specific systems in mind for the comparison? The H and V systems are very different, as are the Q, SL, and M.

It’s not a well formulated question because a) lenses matter profoundly; and b) what I choose is based on my wants, needs,and priorities which may or may not be anyone else’s. With this written: for our street work, our Leica Q3 and SL3 are faster; more fully buttoned up; and more versatile than our X2D. Our Q3 is much smaller, lighter and easier to carry than either of them, but more limited. Yet the X2D is simply an easier system for me than our M11 because my eyesight isn’t what it was and the X2D has IBIS and an articulating screen (my knees aren’t what they used to be either). The X2D has the highest image quality of all of them when circumstances allow me to coax the best out of each system. If I could only have one body among these four, it would be the SL3, but I’d be happier to carry the Q3. But if I were living and shooting in Tuscany shooting at Tuscan speed) it would be the X2D.

Hmmmm,, I have the original in L mount... tossing around the Idea of trading up. I've circled the Leica SL2 --(like I did the CL for months. no triggeer pulled),, I would use either only for landscape stills. Instead, I think I will ward off red dot fever, buy a nice used Lumix S1R and use the money to travel to the places I want to take shots at,, I calculate coming out $3600 - 4100 ahead cash wise. What do you think of that?

Great video, especially the thought-provoking conclusion. Everyone is different. In my case I have the Sigma 24-70 gen 1 and really love it, but I miss the aperture ring - badly. I really like the tactile function of aperture control. So much so that before this announcement, I was considering trading in the Sigma for the Sony GM II for the slight improvement in weight but critically for direct aperture control. Now I have a choice. For me focus was never a problem with the original Sigma. Yup, different folks, different priorities. Having choices is pretty awesome for Sony users.

@@3BMEP Sony artificially cripples all Sigma Linear Motor Glass with 15 FPS AF-C, in order to protect Native Glass. They are cowards and should allow Sigma to push competition and spur more innovation. Instead Sony seeks to stifle innovation with their monopoly on sensor technology and imposing artificial limits on Speed bodies
