This lens is perfect for those who prefer a wider look to portraits. 45 1.8 is so close to 50 1.8, and the latter is basically ubiquitous for photographers. The 28-45 has more pincushion on the long end but less barrel distortion on the wide end. Overall the Full Frame image plus extra sharpness of the new lens is going to blow the old APS-C lens out of the water. This could probably replace it. It weighs less, is about the same length, can zoom (internally, too), is quite sharp (obviously not as good as the 40mm, but still very good for most of what I do), and the only downside is f/1.8 instead of f/1.4.

@zbieraj7 ай бұрын
The problem is that for the same price, you can get the Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8. An important note: in the 35-45mm range, the Tamron still maintains an f/2.0 aperture (it only goes to f/2.2 at 50mm). It is 5mm longer and 215g heavier than the Sigma. Additionally, the Tamron 25-50mm f/2.0 is coming, which according to rumors, will be half the size, half the weight, and half the price of the Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8. And Sony is about to release Sony 24-70mm f/2.0 for the price (again, rumors) between this Sigma and Canon 28-70mm f/2.0. While it is the brightest full-frame zoom ever made, it doesn't offer enough in terms of range, size, and weight to be truly competitive with what's already available on the market, especially considering what's about to be released (such as the aforementioned Tamron 25-50mm f/2.0).

@zbieraj7 ай бұрын
@@xenonsens Mid-2024-ish. Both Tamron and that f/2.0 Sony.
@joostkuijper62724 ай бұрын
This is wrong. The Tamron 35-150mm does f/2.0 up to 39mm, and f/2.2 up to 59mm, and f/2.5 up to 79mm. So at 45mm you won't get f/2.0 with the Tamron, but f/2.2, making the difference two thirds of a stop compared to the Sigma 28-45mm at 45mm. Furthermore: the advantage if the Sigma is nut just numbers about max aperture (brighter) and range (wider, not having 28mm but only 35mm is a thing), but the main advantage is the stunning IQ. Of course, the Tamron has more range, but for IQ it's only close to primes, whereas the Sigma simply beats most of the primes. It's a beyond zoom performance lens. Therefor the Sigma shouldn't be compared to zooms as if it would be an inflexible short range zoom, it should actually be compared to primes, as being the "most flexible prime" ever. The Sigma is waaaay more flexible than a 35mm prime, while at the same time the IQ is at the same level. The Tamron is amongst the best zooms, but nothing more than that, and beyond 120 or 135mm or so it can't compete wide open with most 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses. And if I would have both lenses I would change to the Sigma for the 35-45mm shots, to get true prime IQ.

I have the 25-35mm f2 art for dslr which is of prime performance and not much flare too. But this would be a great all-rounder, even for astro.

yeah, why didn't I think replacing my 20/1.8 and 24/1.4 with this one for astro 😂

After using it for a while, do you feel that it's still a lens worth buying today over primes? Is the focus accurate too?

I find it frustrating, that most, if not all of these fast/expensive lenses have to be stopped down in order to actually be great... as mentioned here sometimes f2.8 and sometimes f4, or for perfect corner sharpness f5.6... Makes that Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 (699USD vs 1350USD) lens look very good as far as price/performance/reach
@TechnoBabble7 ай бұрын
There's more to optical quality than just sharpness and this new Sigma lens is better than something like the Tamron 28-75 G2 in nearly every other way.
@BorisZX6R7 ай бұрын
@@TechnoBabble apart from the build quality which should come with that price difference, according to actual tests of the lenses I disagree. If it wasn't a 1.8 you or any of these reviewers wouldn't even mention it. And that 1.8 seems overrated.
@TechnoBabble7 ай бұрын
@@BorisZX6R according to actual tests of the lenses I can immediately say that it has less lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberration. Something that is much more important than perfect sharpness in the corners to most people. Also, what a completely asinine thing to say. Of course the f/1.8 aperture is important, that's the whole reason for the lens existing. What kind of statement is that? It's letting in over double the light of an f/2.8 soon, that's the whole reason to buy it.
@BorisZX6R7 ай бұрын
@@TechnoBabble Not saying f1.8 is not important, just saying it is overrated if you have to step the lens down to get great results. If sharpness is not important to you, then that is fine. To me, I see sharpness issue coming up much more than lateral and longitudinal aberration.
@TechnoBabble7 ай бұрын
@@BorisZX6R If you think this lens needs to be stopped down to get great results then there's no hope for you. It's very sharp wide open, sharper than anyone but the top fashion or product photographers in the world would need. You're nitpicking the sharpness in the far corners compared to a lens you likely already own so that you can justify your own purchase. I own a Sigma 40mm f/1.4, I can basically guarantee it's sharper wide open than any lens you own. And yet I can still see that the 28-45 is a sharp lens and can think of many use cases for it, imagine that.

a jaw dropping prime zoom lens.

While I’m sure it is an excellent lens, the large size for a sub 2x zoom at that price means I’ll give it a miss given that I have a 45mm f1.8 already. Others may love its high quality of course.

Sigma is clearly not the same company from 20 years ago producing cheap lenses. This lens is razor sharp and produces perfect images, for a reasonable price.

Incredible performance ...but wait a moment, wouldn't a 35mm f/1.4 GM (or even fe 35mm f/1.8) lens be lighter, cheaper & offer better performance, over 90% of general photographic situations? Yes, I'm sure videographers would find it a great proposition, but I'm always surprised how, by moving back a few feet I can avoid the need for a 28mm prime over a 35mm one. Now a "true" 24mm focal length @ the short end & possibly 50mm @ the long end would be a greater attraction. I just think this optic offers an answer to a question that not that many people want to know. Very clever & interesting as it may be!

The 18-35mm f/1.8 that tons of people used was equivalent to a full frame 27-52.5mm, not much of a difference.
@davidpossien30617 ай бұрын
@@TechnoBabble 18-35 can be used on full frame at 25mm using a hack. 25-52mm is quite a large range for such a fast lens. I'll personally be sticking with my 18-35 for video. This new sigma really only makes sense for photography.
@TechnoBabble7 ай бұрын
@@davidpossien3061 Where are you getting 25-52? It's 25-35 on full frame, you don't just magically also get the APS-C crop equivalent.
@davidpossien30617 ай бұрын
@@TechnoBabble I'm glad you asked. Assuming you're shooting in 4k, in full frame mode, you get 25-35mm (the part of the zoom range without a vignette). In APSC mode you get 27-52mm equivalent (assuming a 1.5 crop factor). Add the two together, and you get 25-52mm. So using the full frame mode, it really only gives you an extra 2 mm of usable range...however the cool part is when using the e-stab on high on full frame mode, it gives you all the benefits of a full frame lens using the entire lens' zoom range. This of course works on the apsc mode as well, but that's not newsworthy. The newsworthy bit is that you maintain more field of view using the 18-35mm in full frame mode with e-stab. I've tried it. It works well, and it's free...since I already own it. Perhaps I should make a video to explain. Now, given what I've outlined above, and this new Sigma lens...which one do you think gives a wider field of view, assuming that is more desired?
@TechnoBabble7 ай бұрын
@@davidpossien3061 well I never said anything about which one gives a wider field of view, nor did I or anyone else in this thread say anything about which is more desired. Using your same logic the new lens gives you a more telephoto field of view, so it's better if that's what's desired. Oh, and you're also making the assumption that the APS-C crop video on the camera being used is good quality or even still 4k, what about the A7S III/FX3/FX6? Also, it's free cause you already own it? Clearly your entire argument is from the point of view of someone that owns and is happy with the 18-35, nobody said you should upgrade. You're clearly just trying to defend your existing gear against... Nothing? Plenty of people don't own the 18-35 because they shoot primarily on full frame and a 24-70 f/2.8 makes more sense, so this is a cool lens for both photo and video.
