As someone who uses a 35 1.4 GM and 70-200 2.8 GM as my main two lenses, this would offer me more flexibility in my wide focal range and let me keep the shallow DOF look when I want to hide the background. I’ve been thinking about replacing the 35 with a 24, but this 28-45 would probably be the choice now that it exists!

Hey Gerald, might help to explain the close focus distance is measured from the sensor plane, not the front of the lens. I see a lot of reviewers who aren’t aware of this and express surprise that the lens is focusing when the front of the lens is closer to the subject than the distance the manufacturer quotes.

As per the price - if this would be branded "SONY", it would cost twice as much. For such type of very fast zoom lens I think the price is reasonable. It makes much more sense to me than the SONY 24-50mm f/2.8, which costs just 200 USD less and is 1.3 stops slower. Actually I was hoping for such lens to come as I really wanted an full frame version of the Sigma 18-35. So I'm really glad about this lens! And seeing the nice rendering of the out of focus areas, it is really tempting. I used to have the Sigma 24-35 f/2.0 and it was a great performer - sharp and with a great bokeh. And it also outperformed the prime lenses at the time it was made.

The problem is that for the same price, you can get the Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8. An important note: in the 35-45mm range, the Tamron still maintains an f/2.0 aperture (it only goes to f/2.2 at 50mm). It is 5mm longer and 215g heavier than the Sigma. Additionally, the Tamron 25-50mm f/2.0 is coming, which according to rumors, will be half the size, half the weight, and half the price of the Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8. And Sony is about to release Sony 24-70mm f/2.0 for the price (again, rumors) between this Sigma and Canon 28-70mm f/2.0. While it is the brightest full-frame zoom ever made, it doesn't offer enough in terms of range, size, and weight to be truly competitive with what's already available on the market, especially considering what's about to be released (such as the aforementioned Tamron 25-50mm f/2.0).

I don't understand why nonlinear focus is still the standard tbh. Linear focus works perfectly fine for fully manual lenses. I guess maybe focus by wire lenses have to compensate for the electronic focus ring being less precise?

The price is actually pretty good I think, it's basically two primes in one. People love the RF 28-70 2.0 because it's 3 primes in one, but this isn't quite as versatile. I wonder how this one compares to the Sigma 40mm f/1.4 which is one of my go to lenses.
@reinhardbecker2846 ай бұрын
I assume the 40 is much better wide open, because there are nearly no primes who can stand against the 40… But the 40 ist no Zoom! If you need/want the possible bit of quality still take the best primes. If you need flexibility take zooms, because what gives you the better quality from the prime, if the picture contains not everything needed…

Normally I'd make a comment about something purple, but I think I have to disagree: $1350 is fine when you look at something like the Tamron 35-150. Obviously that has more functionality zoom wise, but it's also even bigger and heavier and quite a bit more in cost, and not a constant aperture either. In terms of its role in a kit, I see this almost like a prime with a trick up its sleeve: it can zoom to the extents of the medium-wide focal length range and maintain f1.8. In this sense I'm comparing it to primes that are close focusing or tilt shift or have some cool feature besides being f1.8 and sharp. I'm also hesitant to compare it to traditional zooms because almost all zooms go from one 'range' to another (wide to medium to telephoto, i.e. 16-35 goes from ultrawide to medium, 24-70 goes from wide to medium-telephoto, etc.). TL;DR: I'm unlikely to buy one, but if I were to get one, I see it less useful in its ability as a zoom lens and more as a flexible prime.
@thunderstruck5606 ай бұрын
I just dont understand this lens focal range. I've been looking at getting the new sigma 24-70 2.8 mk2 because i've had lots of scenarios where my 28-75mm wasn't wide enough, but when i slap on my 16-28 it is too wide and not flexible. The 1.8 is cool but i'd rather just use the primes and move around because they are lighter and better.
