You didn't actually show the diffrence of the shallow depth of field between f/1.2 and f/1.8 for any of the different shots you've taken. There's literally just one comparison shot, although throughout the whole shoot you shot them at the diffrent apertures. I expected you to show the difference between them tbh, especially since you communicating to the audience that you gonna shoot it at those different apertures.

Couple things: sigma/tamron/tokina/rokinon lenses ARE native mounts. They have access to the lens mount. If its slower, its due to poorly tuned lenses for the mount, not due to reverse engineering as it is wit f, ef, z, and rf mounts. Second, are you sure the shifting is actually worse, or is it just the f1.2 that makes it more noticeable? And third, the shallower the depth of field, the higher the motor needs to be geared down, and the noisier/slower it will be, unless you want to pay out the nose for quieter and more efficient motors. But lens motors are already some of the best motors out there.

Sigma 35 1.2 is crazy good if you need THE absolute sharpest image wide open. In terms of image quality (sharpness, clarity, bokeh, etc.) it's the best 35 I've ever used, aside from the vignetting but thats easily correctable. That being said, I still don't own it and prefer the Sigma 35 1.4 lol The 1.2 version literally doesn't fit in my camera bag with the rest of my gear. Got it while it was on rebate at a local camera store for 700, even cheaper than the Sony 1.8, and it's plenty sharp for me

Wow, that's an amazing lens. Great review, Manny. Gorgeous shots of your gorgeous model and those presets are looking tremendous. Definitely the best presets I've ever seen. I do everything manually in post and generally don't even like people's presets, but yours are fantastic. If I shot Sony and used Lightroom I'd definitely buy them (Canon/Capture One Pro here).

@S3l3ct1ve4 жыл бұрын
You have to get closer than this to actually feel the difference with these wider angles.. Same with 24mm 1.4f , its pretty average performer when you shoot from standard portrait distance, the whole magic happens when you get close to the model... As for 1.2f lenses, the sweet spot is probably 50mm focal length, maybe 40mm. Everything wider only serves as a landscape lens, particularly nightscapes, although vignette can be harsh.. Another thing to consider is minimal focusing distance it has more to do than the actual aperture value. If you got like 50mm lens with focus distance of lets say ~40 or 30cm, you gonna get those extraordinary shots from that distance.
@troyphillips10774 жыл бұрын
I went and got the Sigma 40mm Art for my Nikon d850 . Got it for 1k and I’m loving it . I shoot live music photography and videography , event and documentary type photography and this is a perfect lens for this type of work . 1.4 is crazy sharp but I’ve been using it mostly at f/2.8 . 2.8 the contrast and colors really pop . Live music at 1.4 is a cool look for sure but takes a spray and pray technique. And the lens , the d850 body with a grip and the enel 18 battery damn is it heavy. I dropped this setup twice the first night shooting with it . No relaxing then grip . I found out how tough the lens is and the d850 . Did break the lens hood so thank god for super glue . Thanks for the great review

Very accurate review and great comparison !! I have the sigma 35 1.2 and I have the Sony 35 1.8 If I am in the studio on a tripod, the Sigma is my main setup. If I am doing a landscape shoot with a tripod where I only have to walk less than a mile to get to the location over flat ground, I bring the Sigma.. for anything else.. street, travel, any hiking distance more than a mile, it’s the Sony 35mm 1.8 all day.. the Sigma has incredible optical performance and especially when paired to the A7RIV.. but the two together are equivalent to carrying a bowling ball , and you will feel and regret the weight after lugging it around for more than an hour
