Thank you very much for a great review. A friend brought this lens recently and was raving about it. I currently own the 150-600 Contemporary and it does a good job. I live in Lancaster CA, where it's windy, dusty and hot. I am constantly cleaning the interior of the lens. I take a lot of airplane pictures and nature shots. After seeing your shots, I am convinced this is the lens I am ordering today. Great work my friend!

Hi Sydney, thank you for the kind words. I am so glad you found it useful. I am also very excited for your new endeavor. It's awesome when we realize we either need something, can use something else, or we simply want it :-). In your case, it looks like the Sports version will be very beneficial. CA is a beautiful place to photograph. I need to get out there again one day. In the meantime, keep me posted on your purchase and how you end up liking it yourself. Take care my friend!

Hi Farras! Thanks for your feedback. I came really close to buying the 150-600mm but after studying my needs further, I realized the 60-600mm might be more practical for what I was shooting. I don't think anyone can go wrong with either of these two lenses. Always appreciate hearing from you!

Really like your review style and the content of this review - it is very comprehensive and detailed. Thank you! I hope you will forgive my wordy response... I started my photographic career 40 years ago, and I shoot mostly wildlife. Now that I am living in NZ, that means birds. Some of them can be approached very close and others need to be shot at distance, so the focal range of this lens is great for me. I have had this lens for a couple of years. I added it to my Sigma 150-600c and other Canon natives, and each has its own strengths. Weight: I shoot 99% hand-held and, to use it and my other heavy gear, I train for it. I am almost 70, and I do weights most days of the week - which not only helps me have the strength and endurance to handle the lens, but is good for my own well-being. I also was trained to shoot with a sniper rifle, so I control my breathing and, like you, I prefer the freedom to move. I did find a really interesting unit that is designed for video (which I don't shoot), but is a very versatile unit: the iFootage Cobra 2 monopod + tripod. It is a monopod with a small tripod unit at the base that can be removed to make a tiny tripod and a separate monopod, or a hybrid. I combined it with a ball head and it works brilliantly. I have even been able to use it in places like art galleries where the light is very dim and I am really challenged for exposure. Sharpness: I am not a pixel peeper - I think a lot depends on what and how one is going to present images. Most of my work is now displayed on digital frames up to 55", and all the results, where I get image lock, are sharp. The challenge for any wide-ranging lens design is to accommodate the wider angle capabilities, and relative to the range of this unit, 60mm IS a wide angle. That said, I was surprised that you found the lens relatively soft up to 150mm, as the copy I have actually is very sharp across the whole range and I have really pushed it. It is possible to do corrections in camera or with the Sigma docking station to tweak that and other features. I also recommend to users to keep an eye out for firmware updates. I have no problem with lens corrections for the VERY minimal distortion and chromatic aberration I see. In JPGs, correction is applied automatically if the cameras are set up to do so, and in RAW with PS's lens correction algorithm, which gets applied automatically. Again, for those who seem to be bothered by this, correction is possible with the docking and firmware updates. The IS: Is awesome, and works too with Canon R-series IBIS and, btw, also works well (using Canon's EF-RF adapters) with the eye tracking, despite Sigma CLEARLY stating that it is not designed to work with the new R-series bodies. In that context, a video by respected bird photographer Duade Paton found that the 150-600c would hunt on the R-5 at very close to minimum focus distance. I have tested this on both the 150-600c and 60-600s, and not found it an issue with the latter. I stress that this phenomenon occurred ONLY at MINIMUM focus distance. Accessories: I don't ever use a camera strap. Where possible, I put the cameras and lenses into holsters, but the provision of the strap lugs and the extra strap for carrying the lens separately are a great touch. I don't carry the lens with the case, I store the lens in the case, inside its original packing when not in use. I always keep my gear in their original boxes for easier storage and for potential resale, and that works for me. I did put in a B+W protection filter on the lens to protect the front element. It wasn't cheap, but I would rather have to replace that in the event of a hit or from the impacts of salt and sand than replace the front element. Such a filter saved an expensive front element when one of my lenses was dropped by a clumsy airport security agent. The filter was a write-off ( had to saw it off the lens) but the front element was good and luckily the optical alignment didn't suffer. The hood certainly protects it from front impact when deployed. Your Photos: I have shot some air shows and can appreciate your skill in catching these aircraft. I think Instagram's move to change their display format to suit cell phones in portrait mode does no favours to dedicated cameras. Conclusion: This is an amazing lens, and the things that people might wish for: light weight, perfect sharpness across the range, no distortions or aberrations are really pushing what technology can do right now. These things might be possible at a cost, but some are mutually exclusive: such as light weight and better optical performance. More and more lenses are relying on computational algorithms to make them generate outstanding optical results. Without going that far, Sigma lenses have image correction applied in-body or in PP software, essentially transparently. This a pretty unique solution to the issue of one lens to rule them all...

Hello Trevor I really enjoyed reading your response. No need to ever apologize. Nothing like a detailed description to set things clear. And I do appreciate your kind words. I checked out the monopod you recommended and it looks like an awesome tool. I have set it aside in my Amazon shopping cart for the near future :-). I hope to shoot more airplanes in the coming years and this will come in handy. If you have an Instagram or Facebook page, please do share those. I would love to look over your work. I spend a bit of time each day admiring other photographer's photographs. I made the comment about the lens being soft between 60 and 150mm because I feel my copy is sharper from 150 to 600mm but in no way is it so soft that I won't use it in the wide range. I use it all the time and love it. I just want to be fair to the viewers and open about my particular lens. Regarding your age and the gym, I am super impressed. I go now and then and also study martial arts but I have been missing quite a bit lately. My 9-5 keeps me overly occupied but I am also grateful for my job. I hope to work out more regularly since I have an elliptical machine at home. That and weights, which I have been using ever since I was 15 but just to stay healthy. I had to smile at your reference to a body builder: neither am I. Really, I am trying to retain enough muscle mass and nervous system performance to be able to continue with what I love doing as long as possible. That said, I have had issues, and for a while could barely walk 100m. In that period I gave up my DSLRs and heavy lenses for some Canon M5's and lighter lenses. However, a knee replacement later and I am fully operational again!

I have this lens and agree with all you have stated. My problem is I lost the use of my right arm when I was 4 years old and I am 74 years old now. If you want to have some fun try hand holding this with one hand and yes it can be done and it isn't the easiest thing but is doable. I very seldom shoot at anything less than 150 mm but I do shoot at 600 mm with a 1.4x and a 2x on it with a bi-pod or a tripod. But that is why I bought it. Hiking with a camera and this lens and a 20 lb tripod is interesting but I love this lens.

Hi Bernard, Thank you for your insight and perspective. I never looked at it from that angle and I agree, that would be interesting, to say the least. Kudos to you for signing up to this task. Hiking with this lens alone is a mission impossible. Add a camera and a hefty tripod (which you will need for this beast), and you are talking about a complete workout; cardio and all. I love it as well and I grow more and more fond of it the more I use it. I mostly use my 70-200mm f2.8 when I go flower shooting from a distance (water lilies) but I took this one with me a couple of weeks ago and got stunning images. You can find many of them at the end of my latest video, released this weekend. Keep on trucking and I hope I get to see some of your work one day. Kind Regards! juan

Its really amazing that you have to buy an extra bit of equipment, download software in order to set the AF speed where it should be set at. And ye ofc you can also perform calibration of 5 focal lengths over 4 distances , including 600 for infinity that u can easily do at home if your living room has a few kilometers and a tree line on the horizon . It's really amazing. Much better than.. doing everything right in the first place.

Hi Judy, My apologies for the delay. I lost access to my account :-( I would definitely check some of the videos out there for this lens. I came across a couple of them during my study of this lens (and before buying it) regarding this topic. From what I remember, there was no issue with focusing or sharpness. The issue really was around the fact that the lens lost even more light. Putting on a teleconverter will kill one or two stops of light, depending on the one you use. On the plus side, if you shoot mostly outdoors in bright light and your camera has good ISO (low grain), then you might be okay! Let me know if you ever try it out. I am curious too. Thanks for your comment!!!

the biggest problem with that 150-600mm C is the AF it is really not that good, I had this lens for 2 years and now that i'm getting ""pro"" this lac of AF make it a big deal breaker (for me at least) and the fact that the contemporary is not compatible with canon hybrid BIFF is hard to consider having it for a long period of time, especially with the new canon R7, so in the future I think that this 60-600mm is better for what she offert even if her price is way more expensive

Hi Albas and thank you so much for your comment. I agree with you wholeheartedly. Sometimes, paying a little more (which I avoid if I can), makes more sense, especially when the more affordable equipment just doesn't cut it anymore. This happens to many of my students. They arrive on the first day with a kit lens and by the end of the 12th class, they feel restricted and go out looking for a 24-70 f2.8 :-) No doubt as you get better, you will require more from your equipment. Good luck moving into that 60-600mm. Let me know when you buy it and what you think!

In English for my English-speaking friends: Question: Hello, thank you for this beautiful video I have a question I have a nikon z6 ii and I do a lot of video, do you think this 60-600mm lens can be suitable for video? because I mainly do video (aero, aviation) Thank you in advance for your answer. Answer: Hello friend and thank you for posting your question! The video work I normally do involves hand holding my camera. This lens would make it difficult for me. It does have a very quiet motor, stability is fantastic, and the focal range is spectacular. All of these features, including its very sharp images, make it good for video. If you have a heavy tripod or strong gimbal, then you will not have a problem. Also, if you are photographing steady subjects, you will not have a problem. But if you need to chase your subject around, run after them, or move very fast, it might be a bit heavy. Otherwise, I recommend this lens. I will add new links in the description in case you wish to purchase it from there. Ultimately, I do not know everything you photograph so the decision will be yours. I hope I have helped you in some way. Please let me know if you have additional questions and I hope you have a wonderful week. By the way... I use the lens for photographing airplanes and love it. Just remember to give yourself some space and not zoom in too close.

Hi Vimal, It's great to see your feedback and comments. I appreciate your time and thank you for watching the video! Although I have had no trouble with this lens because it depends a great deal on what we shoot, one of the other viewers did leave a comment about chromatic aberration being an issue. I knew it was an issue after seeing a bunch of reviews but like I said, for what I shoot and how I use the lens, it has been a wonderful lens for me. Chromatic aberration tends to amplify around the wider focal lengths and I use this lens from 200mm to 600mm 90% of the time. If you are planning on buying a more practical lens for formal events, this might be too large and too powerful. The 70-200mm f2.8 is an awesome lens. Being a 2.8 through the entire focal length makes it awesome for portraits as well and you can always buy a 2x teleconverter and make it a 140-400mm lens. As I mentioned in the video, for those few times when I am shooting super telephoto and need to quickly move down to 60mm or 100mm, this lens is perfect for me. It gives me great flexibility. But if you know you will be above 150mm, maybe stick with the 150-600mm lens. You can buy the 70-200mm and maybe the 150-600mm later? Let me know what you end up doing and thanks again for sharing your time with me. Congratulations on your new R6 if you already have it and we'll chat again soon. Vimal, you might want to read my rather extensive comments above. This is a unique and outstanding optic, and there seems to be some variation in individual units, as mine is absolutely sharp across the full range. The best thing to do is try out the one you want for yourself, and make sure it has firmware up to date, and that you use the docking station to apply custom tweaking of the performance for your needs. The docking station is a big feature of Sigma to allow one to do all sorts of customization of their lenses' performance. The RF 70-200 f/2.8 is a very different lens from the two Sigmas: designed for rather different applications. The limited range of that optic, combined with its constant open aperture tell that story. If you want a native Canon lens that is comparable in any way to the Sigmas, then the RF 100-500 is the way to go. I have one: and being a native RF unit, it is faster to focus and has better sharpness, but you then have to consider the difference in price, and the fact that it too has a much narrower focal range.

I'm sorry you got these results. I know there is a docking station for the lens and some people say that after tuning it, they end up with a completely different lens. Mine was pretty sharp but I am sure a time will come when I need to fine tune it.

That s funny. Mine came with a Lens strap. And indeed I hold this with my Lens strap. You probably would destroy the body when you leave therns dangling from the body.

I completely agree, metal mount and all, rooted from the camera :-)

Chromatic abberations are annoying in that lens. Buy Tamron 150-600 G2!

Hi Jarrett, Thanks for your feedback. The way I use the lens and what I shoot has made it a perfect lens for me. I rarely go below 200mm, where chromatic aberration becomes an issue. I have a Canon 70-200 f2.8 for that range if I am shooting anything serious. I use this for airplanes and long distance animals and stay in the 300-600mm focal length most of the time with almost nil aberrations. During those rare times I do quickly go below 150mm, I have that option with this lens and I easily remove the CA in post. Any 150-600mm lens for me will be useless as I do still need to access 60-150mm occasionally, although not often. Either way, I appreciate you taking the time to offer your insight and it will be valuable for other viewers to see so they have other points of view besides mine. Thanks again.

Hi Jarrett: Like Juan, I think it's horses for courses. The 150-600 range is designed for a different purpose compared to the 60-600 and that unit has a much more ambitious agenda. All lenses have their compromises, but one has to consider that they are not all designed for the same purposes. I might add in my fairly extensive experience with the lens over two years, is that the minimal amount of aberrations and distortions were easily corrected: either in-camera in JPGs, or with PS for RAW. Almost all lenses require some kind of lens correction, so to me this is business as usual. FWIW, as an engineer and professional photographer, I did a full technical test on the Tamron 150-600G2 against the Sigma 150-600c, and found the Sigma was at least as good across the performance envelope. I am brand agnostic, (I shoot Canon, Fuji, Nikon, Olympus and Sony gear) but I recognize that we all have our preferences, and again much depends on the configuration of the individual camera/lens combination, and the way that the photographer is using the gear. Frankly, at this level, there is more variation from user influence than the gear - ALL of these units are amazing, especially compared to what we had a few years ago. Finally, much depends on what one is going to produce and how it will be viewed. Many people pixel peep and complain about gear when the output will never be viewed in that context. The vast majority of images these days are shown on-line: where the images are seriously degraded to fit into posting limits, or on Digital screens that also have their own influence on image quality. Not many people are going to shoot to produce large, detailed Fine Art prints for sale.
