If it had come out a year and a half ago, when I first got into the Sony system for shooting sports, it would've been super tempting, but the first-gen Tamron 70-180 I bought being still good enough optically and way lighter doesn't have me itching to switch.

My arms are finally saved. I've been using the EF version for so long. It was so ridiculously heavy for a 70-200. It was unusable for weddings because with the adapter it was so unweldy on a sony body.

One thing I'd like to see in lens tests is how they treat colors. Using the same camera body and light source as a base, you can shoot a MacBeth/X-Rite or whatever their name is now, accurate color chart and use the eyedropper tool in your photo editor to compare color channel levels. Or use yout test chart as long as you don't have to fear colors fading with time. Back in the '80s and '90s I was managing a pro camera store in SoCal and was interested in how camera lenses treated colors. Canon and Leica lenses were known to give beautiful reds in images back then. The store carried Tamron, Sigma and other brand 3rd party lenses and one day I decided to test them shooting a scene outside the store that had a while wall and a grey wall. Now these results are from optics from 30-40 years ago and don't compare to what the manufacturers are producing today. I found the lenses did have their own color characteristics, Sigma having a distinct green cast while the others were more pleasing in color being perhaps warmer or cooler in tone. I don't know if such a color test is even possible considering the digital path with sensor/lens/software making a difference. (I say software because Nikon's software always gave me what I considered the real 'Nikon' look, especially in the blues and greens. I'm retired from photography, working in a camera store or shooting professionally and because of health issues I don't leave the house much either. (BTW, watching your on location videos makes me feel like I'm getting out of the house for a few minutes. Thank you!) Sorry for the long post but heck, I've got nothing but time on my hands and I also used to write articles/reviews that were photographic and computer centric so the 1K-2K piece or more size is sort of normal for me.

I used the EF version adapted to L mount for a long while but eventually sold it, as for video the massive amount of focus breathing at the long end was a bit much, it was also colossally heavy at 1800g. I 'm glad to see they've improved it all for the mirrorless versions, I've been living without a long lens deciding whether or not to get a Panasonic or not, but this looks great. I already have the Tamron (where have you been Sigma?) But if I had to choose again, I'd choose the Tamron again because compactness rules. That being said, on Sony bodies, having an aperture ring transforms the shooting experience. So Sigma, are you going to do a newer version of the amazing 24-70 with an aperture ring and maybe a little Slimfast treatment?

I agree 100% with the lack of buttons on the Tamron. I shoot sports primarily, but weddings too. So many times I wish I could manual focus or custom focus my shots for very important moments. I'd now consider selling my Tamron to purchase the Sigma 95% because of the button functions it offers

how about a revisit of your "70-200 f/2.8 battle"? Last time you did it, Sony still had theit GM 1 lens, Sigma wasn't released, it would be nice to see if the other still compete. Especially the Canon collapsable 70-200 and the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8S. They were extremely nicely rated last time, but the competition wasn't remotely as fierce. And it's been a long time too, the market has changed ! I think it would be a nice video. Potential to do the same wit 24-70 f/2.8 as well (maybe even 16-35 or whereabouts ?). Could be nice to see. We often say that you date the camera bodies but marry the lenses. Basing your camera body buing decision on a lens rather than a speclist is 100% plausible, and it would be nice to be able to compare all lenses, not just lenses available on the same lens mount.

Seems a chunky/heavy lens. Probably additional weight is down to a typewriters worth of buttons bolted to the side, along with the other operability gizmos such as the click/clickless aperture and quarter stop barrel collar features which are all useful. But Sigma usually means weight so this is no surprise and detracts this from the less weighty competition. Where weight is not an issue, this looks like a credible option and worth a test run.

Your significant merit is in tackling the most essential features in real life photography. I also go for lighter lenses. As for easy & discreet travel gear, I'm still waiting for a less fast pocketable 70-200mm to go with an A7c, the small & rather impressive 28-60mm being a good start.

Looks like a decent lens overall, as far as E Mount goes I'm sure it will be appreciated by those who want a full 200mm or all the physical controls, without the Sony GM price. However considering how long it took Sigma to come out with this one, I was expecting something more. Would've been really cool to see Sigma do something a bit different in this segment such as squeezing a 70-250mm f2.8 into this size, or what I think would've been interesting, releasing it as a really compact & lightweight external zoom lens like Canon's RF version, and then releasing a 120-300 f2.8 internal zoom at the same time. So you could choose between compact at a much lower price than Sony, or pay a similar price to the GM II and get 100mm more range. I think 120-300 DG DN would be particularly good for Sigma to release as they don't make the DSLR version anymore which is a bit odd considering they still make a number of other DSLR lenses. With the only option for 300mm 2.8 on Sony being over £5000 a more cost effective Sigma version would surely be popular. It is shame to see some odd design choices on this lens such as the hood that requires screwing in and blocks part of the zoom ring when its on the right way, and fully blocks it in reverse. But to be fair, Sigma can't completely knock it out of the park every time. We've got a bit too complacent, expecting them to come out with something 90% as good as the first parties at 50% of the price, And it's only the more recently released Sony & Tamron competition that truly make this lens a harder sell.
@AnotherOtherMan-alive Жыл бұрын
Though a lot of cameras have great auto-focus right now, something you could test for and mention if present is parfocal ability. This would mainly be useful for those looking at getting more cost effective glass for smaller broadcast use (I'm thinking smaller churches where that would be useful, hell even electronically adjusted parfocal-esk ability would be fine). For those that don't know; in film production you can just retake it again and again but not so much with broadcast.

I think the 70-200mm 2.8 is regarded as a general purpose short telle, and it sort of isin't, Its a bit too big to lug around with you unless you know you are going to need it. For Event photography, professional outdoor fashion and portrait it is for sure essential, but if you are not doing that I think its usefulness sort of drops off a cliff. The lens that changed my mind, well shifted my perspective a bit, was the Mk1 Tamron 70-180 2.8, its way smaller and lighter, add close focus and magnification to its bag of tricks and the 20mm extera at the long focusing end is not a big deal to loose. one thing I would like to see added to tests is the magnification and envelope of performance around close focusing distances, I think 200 vs 180 mm is not such a big deal if it only 200mm at infinity

I recently bought the brand new Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS | Sport Sony FE mount, but unfortunately it keeps making relatively audible noises when it is connected to the camera and the camera is on. The noise is comparable to when an external hard drive is connected to a laptop and you click through the files. In other words, like when an external hard drive is running. The noises are similar. If I turn off the image stabilisation switch on the lens, the noise is just the same. Even if I don't press the camera's shutter release button halfway, the noises are audible. They are permanently audible, regardless of whether I am taking photos. Can someone please give me some feedback as to whether this is normal with this lens.
