In this ultimate 85mm prime lens test, we pitch the brand new Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art DG DN against the Sony 85mm f/1.4 G Master, Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE, and the old Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art DG HSM lens to see which one is the best option for full frame Sony mirrorless cameras. All of the lenses we tested were Sony E-Mount and trialled using my own Sony A7III camera.
Please note that this is a fully independent test - none of the manufacturers in our lineup have paid us to create this video and all of the opinions expressed are purely my own based off the evidence collected.

Very good video, Tom. I had the 85GM 1.4 (2 of these, actually) and I ended up getting the Sigma 85 1.4 DG DN ART, in the end. This happened when my first 85GM had the weirdest 'scratching' audible noise when focusing. So loud I was convinced I had a faulty lens. My replacement was exactly the same. Picture quality is superb but, when I ended up taking this 2nd lens back, I tried out the new Sigma DG DN ART 85 f1.4 and this is a much better lens as well as £500 cheaper!!! The focus is much quieter, much faster (in lower light conditions) and it is absolutely surgical in it's sharpness. Sony is a great lens, 3-4 years ago, but the Sigma is better! However; if you (like me ) use the A7R IV, you simply must try Sony's FE135mm F1.8. This is lens heaven!!!!!!!!

I have got the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM which are better than any of those 85mm lenses (in fact of ANY lens under 300mm!). If I was to get a 85mm lens, I would go for the Sony 85mm 1,8, but I will rather have the much more versatile Voigtländer 65mm 2.0 APO-Lanthar Macro lens which will do exellent in any kind of photography and it have a very high resolution which go very well with my Sony A7RIV.

at 5:53 I'm not only looking at how good the lens keeps the subject in focus, I'm also looking at how smooth the lens is pulling focus. I do this by looking at the out of focus area in the background. To me, the focus pull by the af on the Samyang & the Old Sigma was very jumpy in the background. The new Sigma was also not entirely as smooth as I'd like it to be. But the Sony seemed very smooth. No jumpyness in the background. It looked like a perfect manual focus pull, even tho it was AF. Which is exactly how I want my lenses to perform with AF. As much as I want to buy the cheapest lens, I feel it is worth it for me to spend my $$ on the best investment.

This is all I needed. Other than weight/size, I wanted to see was there any real difference between the DG HSM vs DG DN aka image quality which the new sigma is definitely sharper. And the distortion, I've read about but doesn't seem to be noticeable in studio portraits and hardly noticeable outdoors from what I've seen elsewhere. Decision made .. thank you

Looking forward to my new Sigma 85 landing at the end of the month. I sold the GM at the start of the year as it was a backup to my Sony 85 1.8 and never really loved the AF performance on the GM for the type of weddings I shoot. I love the lightness and the compactness of the Sony 85 1.8, but I have never loved the rendering and I hope that the new Sigma can keep up in the AF department to the Sony 85 1.8 and have nicer rendering as well. Now we just need Sigma to update the 35 1.4!

I also have the Sony f/1.8 and since sending the Sigma f/1.4 back, I've realised just how good the Sigma was! Thanks for your comment! Must be a quality control thing. For me, it's a deal breaker. If I turn up at a shoot and my lens just locks up my camera then that's potentially a disaster - especially at something like a wedding!

I have had all these lenses and have worked with these lenses for a long time. the new sigma lens is the best point blank all the test we did sigma always had the most checkpoints. The Samyang is number two for me and it has everything to do with price but if you mess around enough with the Samyang you can still get those great quality shots from the Samyang
@TomCalton
@TomCalton 3 жыл бұрын
From a price perspective, the Samyang is great value for money. But the trade off is reliability issues, which for me as a full time photographer just isn't worth it. I need my lenses to work flawlessly (or as close to it) every time I pick them up. If they don't, it could damage my reputation and lose me money.
@KingLeBronTv

@@TomCalton These are all valid points as I started my business using a Samyang 85 1.4 so I know the obstacles this lens provides. I started my business in video so I used manual focus for 99% of the jobs. Didn't really use 85 then but did use other Samyang lenses that couldn't be trusted for focus but man when it did the pictures are almost identical to an 1800 lens. I personally own the sigma 85mm 135mm and the sony 20 700 2.8 these are the lenses I use for work. So I understand the need for lenses to work at peak potential. The reason I watched your video was to see if anyone is having issues with the sigmas in back lite sittuations still haven't found a fix for that.
@weareyesyesyes
@weareyesyesyes 3 жыл бұрын
Ive made thousands of images with the samyang, and it has been fantastic. Zero issues with AF, and for what i shoot, and tint variation hasn't been a concern. With that said, i did own the samyang 35/1.4 and it was completely unreliable, so its very believable large copy variation is present. Perhaps that is expected with cheap, small manufacturers. I will actually be selling my samyang 85, for the Sigma. I want all my prime lenses to have the same form factor (aperture ring, manual switch, custom button etc) as it makes far easier having the same work flow for all lenses.
@TomCalton
@TomCalton 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! I agree - looking at other reviews online show mixed results. Most people don't seem to have any issues with their Samyang lenses, whilst others suffer from weird AF problems like I did with my original copy. But, like I said in the video, the new copy I received didn't show any issues. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks for checking out the review! Glad you enjoyed it. I think ultimately, the extra dials and buttons on the Sigma are just a bonus. What really makes the Sigma the best option, in my opinion, is the improved image quality. For you, I guess you just need to decide whether having sharper images without the yellow cast is worth the additional £500/$600ish.

I had the 35mm Samyang and had to sell it in the end - I shoot weddings and found the yellow tint to troublesome when all my other (sony) lenses didn't have it at all.
@TomCalton
@TomCalton 3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that by itself, the yellow tint is slightly annoying, but easy enough to edit out. However, if you shoot weddings and have two camera bodies with, say, the Samyang 85mm on one and a Sigma 35mm on the other, the difference in colour cast between the two lenses would just be infuriating when it comes to batch colour grading images. As it stands, all of my Sigma glass is fairly consistent, so it makes colour grading the hundreds of images I edit for a wedding pretty quick and painless.

I have the Samyang 24mm f2.8, 35mm f1.4, and 85mm F1.4. Major issue with the 85mm f1.4 no one thinks about.... Because the color cast of the lens is strangely orange-ish, when you use flash with the Sony cameras, the white balance is auto set to Flash WB. THIS RESULTS IN YOUR IMAGES COMING OUT NOTICEABLY ORANGE. This is not really a problem when using auto white balance or RAW. But if you shoot JPEG and flash, it's a headache because you HAVE to use a gray card to white balance.
@TomCalton
@TomCalton 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this input Oscar - very important to know if anyone shoots JPEG for sure. Not to mention, if you shoot with two cameras, having one lens with a noticeable orange tint can be a proper ball-ache to process. It just adds additional steps to your workflow, which isn't great when you have 1000's of images to edit for a wedding or something.

Hi im new to photography planning to buy an 85mm lens and not sure if i'll go for sigma or the sony 1.8.. i use it for posting on facebook, instagram or maybe for printing soon.. almost all reviews show that the new sigma 85mm is sharper and my question is will the sharpness of the sigma still be better and noticeable when i post it on social media even though instagram and facebook have photo compression? Should i save my money and go for more expensive sigma?

I actually compared these two lenses here (kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4S7qJ6tn7iUebc) If you're only ever going to post your images on social media then save your money and get the Sony f/1.8. It's great lens and your followers definitely won't notice the difference when viewing them on social media. Hope this helps!

So...here's a crazy thought... I use my Sony 85 1.4 GM for most portraits 'because' it is slightly soft. On models with perfect skin I love using my 90mm Macro lens, seriously, sharpest lens I've ever used. when I'm shooting normal members of the public having a super sharp beast like the 90mm is actually making my post processing a little bit more difficult because every flaw in pin sharp. The Sony 85 'feels' like it gives me just a little less to do in post.
@TomCalton
@TomCalton 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment - really interesting thought! For my wedding and corporate work, I think sharpness is key. If something is just out of focus or too soft, it won't make the cut. However, for posed portraits where you have the time to finesse things, I totally see your point on having a "softer" lens. Me personally, I'd still rather have the super sharpness and have the option to tone it down a bit in post if required, but that's definitely not going to be the same for everyone.

Sony Hong Kong is having a huge discount on the 85GM until the end of August. It will now set you back at HK$9,990 VS Sigma HK$8,000 at launch (US$1 = HK$7.75). Although the GM has been on my radar for years, I decided to put my money on the Sigma DG DN after watching and reading countless reviews and comparisons. Not only is the Sigma a lot sharper across all apertures, it also doesn't have the annoying colour fringing issues that the GM has. The icing of the cake is the 200g weight difference. Never would have thought Sigma could beat Sony at their own game.

Sigma isnt a problem because lens profile/correction has distortion built in, Samyang is a problem because color correction isnt a part of lens profile. One can also argue that high distortion correction may result in some IQ degradation
@TomCalton
@TomCalton 3 жыл бұрын
The orange cast on the Samyang is a tad annoying, but not a deal breaker for most I suspect. The unforgivable thing for me though is the unreliable AF. For most professionals who rely on their tools for a living, I can't recommend the Samyang as it's too much of a gamble. For hobbyists looking for a cheap alternative then maybe it can be forgiven.

I thought this comparison was going to be exactly what I wanted to see, but it turned out to be a comparison of a brick wall, when comparing 85 f1.4 lenses, the only thing people really care about is the subject separation, the blur and the bokeh balls and also contrast and sharpness, and focusing speed. why when doing a video like this would you not have side by side blur comparisons. and side by side bokeh ball comparisons. I just don't get it. and from what I hear the new Sigma is faster focusing then the GM. so sorry but this video was a disappointment.
@TomCalton
@TomCalton 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I did show some portrait examples during the video, which you can pause the video and look at (6:39). As I explained in the video, the brick wall was only used in order to try and see the lens defects and sharpness of each lens more clearly (I also dislike this type of lens analysis as a rule, but sometimes it's necessary). Sharpness and focusing speed was covered in the video, so not sure what the complaint is there. Granted, bokeh balls wasn't covered and I'll hold my hands up and admit that was a slight oversight on my part, but we were working to a very very tight turnaround on this video as our time with the Sigma lens was pretty short and unfortunately making videos for KZbin isn't my full-time job. I appreciate the feedback though. This channel is fairly new so we're always looking for ways to improve the content. Hopefully our next review will be more to your liking.

Being honest: the new Sigma is shit. There is too much distortion and needs too much correction by software. I would rather have a lens that is near perfect and does not need that software to run it properly. It does not do the trick for me. The GM is good but the Sony 1.8 is much better value. I cannot say anything of the Samyang.
@TomCalton
@TomCalton 3 жыл бұрын
Strong words 😂. Just to clarify, once the lens profile for the new Sigma 85mm has been added by Adobe, the lens corrections are done with a single click of a button in Lightroom/Photoshop when you edit RAWs. Or if you shoot in JPEG or record video, with the lens corrections enabled in camera you don't have to do anything additional. Each to their own though. 🤷‍♂️

@@TomCalton Sorry for my words :-) . I am actually very soft but I needed to be clear on what I think on this occasion. Everything can be changed with a push of button. It is a banana product like everything else today. It needs to ripe at the client. Anyway I am asking you now: would you rather have a lens with a rectangular image and that illuminates the sensor evenly or a lens that has built-in malfunction by default and the rays exit the lens wonky? What if you want to adapt this lens to another system if possible? I certainly don't have money for everything and I certainly don't have money for something that is not even finished being developed. It is like having a car with 6 cylinders but 2 are not firing. The garages then claims we fix it by software. You will get the same amount of power output but your 2 other cylinders remain for decoration only. Also it comes with an extra cost. Not everyone has photoshop but yet they want to develope raw images with another software.
