The Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN Art are a very good Lens with outstanding optical image quality, so for anyone that want a 85mm 1.4 Lens ( and NEED aperture 1.4) the Sigma with E-mount and L-mount are a very good buy ! I do not use 85/90mm Lenses anymore, now I use 55mm (sometimes), 65mm (most used) and 135mm (often used). I only use the sharpest Lenses with crispy colors and very good contrast, i you think it is too sharp, no problem, you can soften the image, it is much much harder the other way !!!

Thank you Matt for the great review. Your photographs are amazing. I am learning a lot from your poses and style. I am a Sony shooter and had a chance to shoot with the Sigma 85 f1.4 DG DN for a few weeks and I am absolutely blown away by the quality of images. I shoot landscapes but had a chance to shoot at a friend's wedding. I set the aperture at f1.4 inside a tent with very low light and blasted away. I got amazing bokeh effect and I got 95% plus hit rate with perfect focus. I am torn between the 85 and 65 f2 I-Series.

I sold my Sony 85mm 1.4 GM because prefer using my Contax Zeiss 85mm 1.4 or the Zuiko 100mm f2, if I need auto focus the Sony 85mm 1.8 is really nice lens for the price. The Zuiko btw is amazing, if you get the chance to pick one up (for a reasonable price) I wouldn't hesitate.

Love the review and the photos🙂My favorite is the Carl Zeiss Planar ZF.2 Red T* 85mm F1.4 (Nikon F Mount) lens 🙂It has a 72mm filter thread and comes with a metal lens hood 🙂Got it used for a great price 🙂A definite must try over the Sigma/Lumix variants in my opinion 🙂Definitely has great subject separation 🙂

Hello Matt. I was able to compare the small APO SKOPAR 90MM from aperture F2.8 to F11 in terms of sharpness compared to the Sigma 1.4/85mm DGN ART. The Voigtlander is superior!. Surprising, especially since it is very compact! I really appreciate what Voigtlander is able to produce!

Thanks Matt, definitely an interesting offering. Although that Lumix looks even more attractive, slap a mist filter on it and it could serve me well for 80% of pictures if I do decide to go the mirrorless route 😀

What a beast this new dg dn !!! When you see how they « compress » it and improve the quality , the engineers did an amazing work. But 11 lenses for a short telephoto… do we really need this ? I am not sure and mainly for portraits as you usually look for some softness. Anyway too expensive for me. The Lumix’is the best ratio quality/price.

Nice video, Matt. ART lenses are outstanding. My dream ART trilogy could be 28 + 40 + 85. Maybe at the same level of Zeiss's Otus, but at a 4th or 5th of their price.

No, Sigma Art lenses are not (far from) the same as Otus Lenses. I have a Otus 85f1.4 and this Sigma DG DN 85f1.4mm lenses, they are totally different from the "look, colour" etc... It isn´t wrong, If one choose either one of these lenses. They are all very good lenses.

Looks like a really good lens. I have a Sigma 65 mm f2 DG DN I series lens, and I'm very impressed with the sharpness and build quality of that optic. I also have a 90 mm Summarit-M f2.5 (11646), which I picked up a couple of years ago for around £700 used. Alas, my manual focussing skills are not good enough to use it as a regular portrait lens, particularly on an M body. Do you have any experience of this lens?

If you get a chance Matt you should try the Leica 80mm f1.4 Summilux R - great rendering for portraits, definitely not too sharp wide open - apparently same optical formula as the 75mm 1.4 M lens (Mandler design), used to be much cheaper than the M lens but prices unfortunately are creeping up.

Thanks for the concise review Matt I have been on the fence about getting a short tele photo for my SL but I cannot justify spending more than £500 as I rarely do portraits…….I have a Samyang autofocus 85mm F1.4 for my R5 (now discontinued as Canon stamped on their heads!)….I think that will cover me for any portraits needs etc. It is very impressive what Sigma have done size wise with the new version. Still lusting after that new SL 35 ‘cron though! Ken

Excellent video Matt, this is the way it should be, good pace, solid info and of course your own opinion. The positive turn of a works shop is that some of the people may carry lenses that you have never shot with or even heard about, so you can try them out during the shoots. Thanks for sharing and a great weekend Love to see vintage lenses at work, looking forward.

Hey, Matt! Have you tried the 85mm f1.8 from lumix s? How does it compare to this sigma offering? I know you mentioned this at the end but I'm wondering how does it compare to the sigma during actual use. I was also thinking, since this sigma 85mm 1.4 is at 1k usd, would it be better for me to get the Leica summicron 90mm f2 pre-apo asph manual focus lens in 2024? Cos the price of these two are very close. I'm mostly going for portraits and wants to get that leica look. I will be getting an SL typ 601 soon and wanting to know which lenses to get. I'm trying to figure out the best 90mm for it dedicated for portraiture. I'm just a hobbyist and will use this for family and friends and really going for the look that's unique for leica the only reason I want an SL in 2024. Hope you can share your thoughts as I'm very new to the system and I'm having a very hard time deciding cos of budget constraints. I don't really have much room to have too much buyers remorse on these haha! Thank you in advance, Matt!
@Drippyddrip
@Drippyddrip 7 ай бұрын
Just also want to add that I'm currently binge watching a lot of your older videos and they're all very helpful. I decided to go for the lumix 35mm 1.8 for my general photography lens cos of autofocus, weight, price and performance being close to the new leica sl 35mm asph. I want to have at least one autofocus for the SL. As for the 50mm, I'm very torn between voigtlander 50mm f1, f1.2, and the new vintage line 1.5 II These three are giving me a hard time as detailed review and comparison for these three against each other is close to none on youtube. Then lastly, the 90mm which is what I was asking you about above. Hope you can give me your insights. Thank you, Matt!
