Sometimes, there is a better way to explain it. Kirsten, you have done that. Our young troops are smart but occasionally Dad's explanations do not register as I wish they would. Practice with three real signal fires might not set well with the neighbors in our Philippine subdivision so it was good for the gang to see this video from start to finish including the quick ignition. I believe they are more motivated now to practice constructing tripods and stacking materials. Thank you for a superior video.

How about a whistle to carry. Use least amount of energy

Carry a air horn like for a boat , I keep one strapped to my shoulder strap on the backpack for bears and a bigger one on the side of the backpack for Singling, encase of an emergency like being (rescued or hurt ) to get someone attention . Also it can be used to wake people up from a dead sleep after a long hard hike😂 And yes I have done that😏 Thanks for the info 👋

One thing people don't think of is rubber burns hot with lots of black smoke, in an emergency if you can put some tire in your fires it will increase the smoke.

Firstly, it should be said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In other words, avoid a bad situation wherein you need to "signal for rescue" by using outdoor wisdom and common sense. For example, be physically fit enough to achieve your goals. Far too many out-of-shape people attempt do wilderness travel. Furthermore, many inexperienced individuals try and go beyond their level of training and experience. I say use the buddy system whenever you can. That way you at least have a backup. There's a lot to actually being a woodsman. And even back when I was a professional hunting guide I carried a personal locator beacon when it first became available to civilians. Nowadays you can carry a sat-phone and perhaps save search and rescue a lot of time, money and risk.... Other than that I say this was a good video explaining skills that have been known by woodsmen and bushmen for decades.

Leave a note in a car? Maybe not such a good idea if visible from outside. More and more cases of trailhead break ins are reported. Thieves know a well fitted out high top Van contains all the necessities of a well healed Van lifer.
