These kind of videos really make me thankful for my background when I think about where most people are starting from, which is scratch. Country boy that grew up in the woods, hunting, etc, but a career in civil engineering where I started as an intern at 17. 26 years of reading topography, USGS maps, surveys.

I have never had it explained so simply and thoroughly. As close to hands on and actually doing the task, that can be done through KZbin. Great job. Excellent video series. Thank you.

It seems to me like the Compass, and the use of it, are the problem, if magnetic north keeps shifting around every few years. But the maps themselves aren't the problem. You can navigate very well using maps and no compass, you just have to understand the maps and what they mean in explaining the features you're going to start using as landmarks. It's better to use nevigation aids that don't shift.

While that would make more sense, be easier and what not. If you needed to travel by night or in an extremely cloudy situation. You wouldn't know what direction North East South West were in without a compass. Plus you wouldn't know which way to orientate your map to get it in the correct direction without a compass. So you really need both. You need to know how to use both. Also you need to understand the magnetic shift in order to completely use both in conjunction with each other.
