ShredMaster Scott’s Modal Lesson: • Modes Of The Major Scale
Writing shredding and fast lead lines is tough business. Too many notes and it gets repetitive and robotic, too few and the kids won’t think you’re cool. But by combining simple melodic techniques with fast scale passages and arpeggios, as well as sufficient practice, you can compose an impressive technical solo on any instrument.
Throughout the video I refer to the chords as A and B. To be more specific, the B chord is played as a B/A, so the bass remains unchanged, and stays playing an A over the B chord.

Great lesson, well thought out. You're spot on when you mentioned rhythmic variation as that's definetely one of the key ways to make a shred solo interesting. One of my favorite guitarists is Vinnie Moore, I love his style of composing and there's no shortage of differing rhythms in his compositions. Makes things exciting because you really don't know what's coming up next in the tune so ya hang to listen to the whole thing. Again well done!

That was an amazing treatise on writing solos.. I've always considered creating the 'melodic path' for a solo; locked in and done the same each time.. and Petrucci is a master at this.. especially when keyboards and or bass are playing in unison (shifted octaves) or a full counterpoint between keys and guitar solos. The motif and retrograde motif is really awesome (even throwing in some negative harmony as another variation on the motif.. Great video, Jake, really well put.

Great video as always. I want to point out something to all, especially beginners, notice the position of the left hand, it's perfect. That's the right way to place your hand if you want to play fast licks, straight with the thumb behind the neck. I mention it because I learned the wrong way 30 years ago, my thumb tend to go on top of the neck and I lose some range, my fingers are not straight with the frets. I try to correct this but it's a lot harder when you're used to it, so if you're just starting, pay attention to that, it will be beneficial on the long run.

I am not only looking for shredding solos, i am looking for modern solos that i cannot find in any book. Nice melodic rock-solos, how to develope runs or sequences, that what i am looking for. If asked, I’d say that your KZbin channel has taught me the most as far as music theory goes. Shredmaster Scott would be 2nd. I took lessons for years, but never learned anything besides technique.
