Cardboard Chaos is here and it’s time to riff on a new idea! Rock out with your cardboard stock out! This episode we work with a master builder at the Fender Custom Shop to see if paper has the ability to handle the look, feel and sound of one of the world’s most recognizable guitars, the Fender Stratocaster. A master builder can make just about anything look good, but will it sound good? Will it have tone and will it be able to handle the heat and get approval from one who rocks for a living in one of the most ass kicking bands of the last two decades, Linkin Park?! It’s a tall order and with roughly 250lbs of torque put on the neck of a guitar from the strings - We have ourselves a challenge and some Cardboard Chaos! Check out the cardboard skateboard and surfboard here: signalsnowboard...

IMO Brad is an amazing guitarist, but not for the same reasons I think someone like Slash is an amazing guitarist. Brad can seamlessly fit his guitar work into the flow of the songs, it makes the songs feel unique even though the riffs aren't amazingly complex. One of my favorite examples of this is Hit the Floor...its the easiest fucking song to play on this planet yet it goes so damn well with what the rest of the band is doing and it sounds amazing because of the effects he uses. At the end of the day he's more of a craftsman - trying to make everything fit INSTEAD of making it stand out with the exception of a bulk of the hunting party and this song where he tries something different yet still keeping his roots in the form of simple, yet effective, riffs and in this case solos.

@elfi4579
@elfi4579 8 жыл бұрын
Why are you so stuck on epoxy or resin? When something is made of carbon fiber, we call it carbon fiber. but reality is the carbon fiber is the underlying cloth. It only gets stiff and strong from the resin used. Big deal. There is a coating of something in impregnated in the cardboard fiber. It's very clear to see the difference in color between when they first start putting together the grid pieces, and when the shop is milling and sanding the body shape. There is definitely something there to make it more rigid.
@terrypussypower
@terrypussypower 8 жыл бұрын
No, there isn't "definitely" something to make it more rigid at all. There MAY be something, and there may NOT be. And as it doesn't say there is in the video then you're simply guessing.

To me it's not so much the wood type, it's the density and weight. Some woods are just more dense, leading to it being heavier alot of the time, and sometimes you can compare the same wood type and it could weight alot less or much more. Out of my 19 guitars, the heavier ones have the better tone and sustain than the lighter ones. Like I have a RG920 (it's a 6 string) and it's reallllyyyy heavy for a 6 it weigh's more than most of my 7's (only one beats it and it's a neck through) and it's tone and sustain beats the crap out of my RG927 (which is basically the same guitar with an extra string. Same trem, same pickups, same body wood, same wood on the fretboard). The only difference is the neck wood combination. I've even upgraded to a fat brass block to try and beef up the tone, but it still is not comparable with the RG920. And that neck through I mentioned earlier is a tone MONSTER, it's an Agile. I've never played a guitar that handles high gain so well, and it will keep a note forever. It's as heavy as all of my 8 strings except 1, and that's a fat hellraiser. Yeah, my back might be screwed later in life for actually liking a heavy guitar, but it's soooooo worth it lol.

@gwidao123
@gwidao123 8 жыл бұрын
Well from the brief experience i've had, most "rockstars" have NOTHING on the top technicians at most big brands factories! they actually recruit people! There's a little story i heard once that some dude at gibson australia smoked the hell out of petrucci and he bowed to the guy afterwards xD. Rockstars are only more famous, there's so many people in the world and there's a bunch of everyday guitarists that are fucking amazing! They just don't have the crowd around them all day =) At the end of the day, it's not a competition. Music is so personal it doesn't even make sense to compare. I really dislike people who treat such a rich environment like a rank ladder.
@martincote7000
@martincote7000 8 жыл бұрын
You're totally right my friend. Music should never be a competition (f**k show like America's Got Talent) but if we talk on a technical standpoint, that tech seems freaking on point. But then again, if you're not a musician, it's harder to appreciate music on a technical standpoint. Even though I like Linkin Park, especially when I was younger, they got nothing on a band like Dream Theater for exemple. Its basic pentatonic riffing in 4/4. But hey, I never said it sounded bad and the proof is that LP is way bigger than DT. So who am I to tell one is better than the other!
@gwidao123
@gwidao123 8 жыл бұрын
I've played guitar for the last 7 years, haven't had time to keep up in the last 3 though so i've deteriorated a bit. But dude you name it, sweeps alternated tapping improvisation, i could do all of that stuff, but spend a couple weeks without training and poof, gone. trying to get it back wth one free hour a day is being tough. I had a little band playing mr. big covers for a while back then i was the shit! But yeah, most of the stuff people who aren't musicians think is amazing and "it must be impossible to play that" are things any normal student can do in a 2 year practice method, and is actually staple of the method. I've come to really apreciate people who are versatile and understand various genres profoundly that is sooo hard, and it takes so much hard work to be able to do it's not even funny xD. I really liked LP in the early years, they changed and i didn't follow through, just like with RHCP, another band i love to death. But it's their style right. Anyone can play pentatonics and simple improv or play a learned riff that sounds cool. Takes a real artist to compose something beautiful that takes al their self to play, that's what i value in music. Doesn't really matter your skill level if you can make something with all your heart, i will always respect it. i mean sure i like dream theater and Paul gilbert racer X stuff, but i guess there's a reason i alwas keep coming back to hendrix, iomi, john frusciante, buckethead, i really love their stuff because it's got so much feeling in it. DT started sounding a little robotic for me after a while, just like iron maiden, amaazing at first, it's like a well oiled machine, but after a while it just seems they're going on automatic mode. =)

It takes the right configuration to create stability. (Obviously) Wood is all one piece so its stable. Paper/Cardboard is so many pieces which makes this more incredible. Would've loved to see how it resonated.

Tone wood is important on acoustic instruments. It's more of a marketing ploy on electrics. People have made electric guitars out of solid metal, acrylic, etc. and they sound fine. The scale-length, type of pickups and placement of pickups are all much more important to the tone produced than the body material.

Frank The whole tonewood thing,in solidbody electric guitars is total BS,perpetuated by guitar builders,in order to sell their overpriced coffeetables.The wood only matters in acoustic or hollowbody instruments.Many companies,like Parker or recently Aristides,have build guitars out of composite materials that sound amazing and sustain like crazy.Check out some demos for Aristides guitars by Timo Somers.

It actually really does make a difference. In the same way that having a brass/plastic/graphite/bone nut or stainless vs nickel frets or different bridge saddles can subtly change the sound of an electric guitar. If you bought a maple strat body and a mahogany strat body from warmoth and tried them out with the same neck and electronics you would have to be deaf not to hear the difference. The composites some companies choose for their guitars are chosen because of their resonance. If the tone came out flat, tinny or muddy they wouldn't continue using that material. Do you think that if your guitar right now were made out of solid billet aluminum or concrete it would sound exactly the same coming out of your amp? It'd probably sound like shit right? Here's a video showing how the difference wood can make on an electric guitar. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKOokqVtmcyJras

Probaply not, since a normal strato is metal plastic, the carbord one has many air holes. They should be around the same weight, but i assumer the carbord is 1 either lighter because of the holes, or 2. is heavier because it is compressed carbord which is like wood with holes.

Why would we feel uncomfortable ? The "tone-wood" used here is Wood and it sounds like a Chinese Squire. Cardboard is wood chip pulp and is made out of any or all of these tree varieties ; Oak, Sycamore , Chestnut , Spruce, Pine , Eucalyptus and ,Silver Birch-wood. So yeah it's still a "wood" guitar. It's JUST ground up pulp wood with an epoxy to make it stiff.

Listen everyone, we all know Brad isnt the best guitarist, but the way he plays and the riffs he has in songs are not there to impress you and inspire you with their complexity, but instead to make you feel a certain way, alongside the lyrics and other instruments it builds an atmosphere that makes you truly feel the song! To some, that's all that matters, not how fast someone can play. That's his skill. And that's why Linkin Park is in the hearts of so many people.

Stellar Steel - it is still concrete but it then gets called reinforced concrete. carbon fibre can be bent easily by hand until it's been processed, as can glass strands and mat of fibreglass. by the time this was at fender it was a completely different colour and clearly wasn't regular cardboard any more - for a start, it hasn't got a fretboard and yet bending the strings isn't chewing the neck to dust.

The fact that it plays wasn't much of a surprise for me. Over the years I have seen several guitars made of strange material, actually sound very good. To name a few, I've seen an all glass guitar, an all clay pottery type guitar and even an all metal guitar. They all sounded pretty good. The clay pottery guitar was the only one that really had a very different sound. On the others the difference wasn't as noticeable as the pottery one. I don't know if it's because it was put in a kiln and kiln-dried or because of the hollow aspect of it. I suspect it was a combination of both. This cardboard guitar seems dense enough that the sound isn't effected too much. It actually sounds fantastic for what it is.
