Just wanted to add another sign of a Happy Conure that we have noticed which is: Chattering! All 3 of our rescue conures like to chat and squeak when they are resting or preening. Looking into it more it seems this is indeed a sign of contentedness or happiness! Scampi makes these little high pitched peeps, pickles chats and Olive likes to chatter!

Hey Makayla! There could be a variety of reasons why it doesn't want to be touched. It could be because it is moulting and irritable. It could be due to hormones. One obvious thing that normally can trigger issues is a change in jewellery, nail polish or even clothing on you. For example Sophie once wore a bracelet which Pickles hated.

Ms. Pickles would be a perfect mate for my Green pineapple conure. His so loving like yours but maybe because he see me as the Alfa. Had him very little and hand feed him for weeks. He takes free flights every morning like a dog owner would walk their dogs. Lastly his never in a cage but goes to it when his tired and wants his space or sleep. He is good with my family and even strangers. #engagednotcage. I want people to read this because a bird that’s your family would never fly away. They are happy with you and would want to spend their 30+ years with you with unconditional love. It is amazing experience for your soul and theirs. A bond like no other

Hey Ethiel, Thank you! Pickles is very hard to woo lol. She is a very free spirit. He sounds like he has a good home with you and you truly care for him! It's also nice how you let him decide when he goes back to his cage. Ours generally only spend time in them to sleep or for a rest in the afternoon! But, I just wanted to mention a couple of things if that's ok? Birds don't have an alpha system. They are flock motivated! He likely just is affectionate because he likes you and is bonded to you! If you and your bird aren't free flight trained be careful. Even if your bond is mega strong they can still get spooked, scared and fly off. If you want to carry on doing so I'd consider a GPS tracker (assuming you don't have one already!)

I've got a male sun conure, he's very loud. Like eat splitting loud. He's loud when he knows I'm home, loud when squeaky doors open, loud when he's in his cage and I'm home. He's only not loud when he's out or I'm not home. He's rarely quiet. I knew conures were loud but my previous experience with them (having had one that unfortunately passed away and knowing someone who breeds them) is that they have rarely done this loud screech all the time. The breeder and my mum touched his back a lot and he comes up under my hand a lot because of it, but that behaviour is settling. It's mainly that he's so loud and it worries me. He happily plays and interacts with me, I've just been told that he's too loud even for a conure and it worries me like I've done something wrong. Whenever I have online classes or I'm on the phone I have to have him out or leave the house otherwise he's too loud to hear. When I visited my parents and I bought him with my brother constantly screamed at him even when I asked him to stop and my step brother would flick his cage because of how loud he was (I didn't know about most of them cause I worked while there and had him out when I was home). I don't hugely mind his loudness but it's bothering me that so many people have issues with it and he suffered by family because of it (I did tell them off and made them watch a video on conures getting stressed and dying cause he was displaying stress behaviour). Is him being ear splitting loud normal or am I doing something wrong? He's much louder than the birds in your video. Thank you
@TheParrotTeacher3 жыл бұрын
Hey Joy, So as you said sun conures can be exceptionally loud birds. They are the loudest type of conure. BUT if he is being loud all of the time, that isn't necessarily normal. It sounds to me like there's a few things going on here. He is likely hormonal due to the touching and potentially other factors. He is strongly bonded to you and has separation anxiety when you aren't with him. Other factors as you mentioned like stressors have made him reactive. To try and help with it, blimey it's a bit of an essay to write so I'll try to keep it brief! Does he get enough sleep? They need 12-14 hours of uninterrupted sleep. If they don't get it it can cause hormonal behaviour. What is his diet like? Is it mostly seed, sugary pellets? This again can cause issues. The "naughty" touching may have got him worked up and he may need some training. The separation anxiety can be tackled with training. We recently had a client who had a similar issue. The most basic way is unexpected visits. So you come up to him or into his room, reward him. Leave, then pop straight back in or at random short intervals. This means he doesn't know when to expect attention/you being there. Stopping family members agitating him is a must as it's breaking trust with humans and he may scream because of it. There's more to cover but I don't want to bombard you. I have a few videos on conure care that might be worth watching. I'd also suggest going to my GF's channel BirdNerdSophie and watching her video on hormones! If you need 1 on 1 help or more than general advice we run a business providing advice for bird training/general care. But I am happy to respond to any questions here too! Hope this helps!
@kosywithak3 жыл бұрын
@@TheParrotTeacher thank you for replying. I'll give these tips a go and see what happens. Hopefully something can be sorted out. He's never really been interested in things other than pellets unless I'm eating it (so we "eat" together, he also doesn't seem to like any treats I've tried), my family doesn't see him much cause they live in another town and he usually sleeps for only about 8 hours (he'll put himself to sleep then wake himself up and start being active) so I'll try and find a thicker cage cover to encourage better sleep. Thanks again! Hopefully this all works out.
@TheParrotTeacher3 жыл бұрын
@@kosywithak hey again and no problems! Our conures faves are hemp seeds,, millet, , fruit, sunflower seeds and safflower seeds as treat foods! It may be worth looking at the pellets you use, are the first listed ingredients wheat, soy or corn? If so it could be a contributing factor ! Eating together isn’t necessarily a bad thing! It’s a way you could introduce him to other veg and foods by giving him his own little plate! Sleep is definitely a big factor in his noise level then! Full cage covers can also contribute to hormones ! Watch some of my and Sophie’s videos and if you need anymore info let me know!

Hey Cindy, It can mean a few different things depending on context. If tail and "bum" is in the air and rubbing against something it's naughty behaviour. Love the beaky grindy time. So cute! Here is a weird question. At night Buddy sleeps with 1 foot tucked up, but that one is clung to the side of the cage. I assume that is something he picked up from his previous owner of 6 years. He never does that any other time. Just at night. I don't know if this kid shook his cage or something to cause him to seek out extra support maybe? I got him moved into a new big ol flight cage. He loves it. Moved in without issue (I put some video of his moving day up on my channel). He still does the 1 foot grab at night. I tought he might have a night friht last night cause of a new environment, but he slept all night like a champ. Woke me up with his morning tune. Ate his veggies. Did some more singing while I was in the kitchen. Now is going on about his preening. Even yeeted a feather over the side of the cage lol I also got more planet pleasure toys in the same day. He really loves the Kokocrunch Cookies, doesn't seem to interested on the others. Where did you guys get that learning pick up toy she is playin with? lol conure eyepatch, love it! Shoulda mentioned never pets under the necks. Below the neckline is considered sexual to the birds.
@TheParrotTeacher4 жыл бұрын
Hey An, It's possible yeah. As long as it's in the fluff and it's one foot it should just be a learned behaviour rather than anything of concern! Sounds awesome to me! Seems like he's a happy bird there! Those toys are always the best, we really like that brand too. The boys and Pickles can be fussy with new toys, but generally not with Planet Pleasures ones. It's a Zoomax teach box and bank. We got ours from Northern Parrots, but there's bound to be places to pick it up in the US. It's an odd habit she has, always wants to cuddle there or against the side of the head lol Well aware of that :P In the clip you'll notice she's being petted only around her cheeks and back of her neck. I don't touch her wings or tail unless it's by accident. Cuddling with conures is slightly different as they will make contact with other parts. But, it only tends to be naughty if you wrap your hand around them from the top, cup them entirely with close contact etc.

Hey Kendall, I know my conure gets grumpy if I interupt him when he's really into something, like preening or playing. My partner gets bitten a lot as he doesn't read our bird well. I'm trying to teach him that. Also, a couple of days each season the bird is hell grumpy because he's just had enough of moulting. Baths with cool water will help this. Do it when they have time to dry off. You can get large plastic containers that hook inside the cage. If your bird comes out cage, you can hold them under a slow dripping kitchen tap. I am in a warm country. Each day I hang the hose over the clothes line, put it on mist, and hold my conure under it. She gets soaked and is so happy afterwards. Good luck.

Most of the time hes very gentle but hes still a very young bird and he'll get too into the nibbling and we both get a fun little moment of surprised shouting haha. He normally goes right back to petting! My little oscar doesnt ever put his feet under him like that, even when hes clearly resting or taking a nap. I wish he'd do it and relax even more! He is still young and very busy but even when hes otherwise perfectly content he'll still be standing straight. Im wondering if its a young bird issue. He does often have the one foot up though! That's adorable! Pickles likes to do that too, gently nibble away! It is possible it's just him. If he is ok in every other way it may just be how he prefers to relax. What do you do with a Conure that will chomp everyone in the family but one and he’s only home on the weekends. I really want our GC Conure to be happy but it seems like outside of offering treats (nuts and millet) and some new, more interactive/shreddable toys, she seems to be perpetually perturbed by my mom, dad and myself. 😢 she can sit on my brothers shoulder and she will love, cuddle and preen him as much as the day is long. Anyone else’s shoulder and you’ll likely walk away with a bleeding ear. 😭 and it can be for absolutely zero reason. We talk nice to her, we’re all calm, I don’t know what to do. I trained out old Cockatiel to not bite us and she was wonderful, the training Does not work with our GC. We really want her to be happy and stop biting us. 💔 I need to handle her with a cotton glove on my hand that she knows she can’t bite through... or she’ll sit on my head (I wear a denim bucket hat) at least if she’s mad, she can chew that. 😅 Any advice? And yes, we’ve adjusted her diet for as much healthy, low sugar/carb food because things like Corn (most bird pellets) would make her EVEN MORE aggressive, even to my brother she’s so fond of. 😔 she’s on whole roasted, in she’ll hemp seeds, millet as a treat and lots of nuts like Cashews, Pistachios and walnuts. She doesn’t like Peanuts. And she also enjoys the treat of a little Boiled chicken (no salt) and we’re talking just teeny amounts of chicken/eggs.
@TheParrotTeacher2 жыл бұрын
Hey there, Usually there is a reason, however subtle it may be. So as you mentioned diet is the first place to look which is good. You ideally want her on a balanced diet including veg, sprouted seeds, some seed, herbs, spices, flowers (flowers may help you here, especially chamomile) and various other things in small proportions. I'd also highly suggest removing chicken from her diet, it's definitely not a good supplement. Plain scrambled egg is good though in moderation! I'd then look at the "dynamic" in your house. If she favours one particular person it means that the rest of you need to address that aspect and work on improving your relationship with her. Conures can be quite clingy with one person. For example Scampi, one of our rescues always favoured Sophie and would bite me. So I put in tons of extra training work with him to restore the balance between us. I'd also start working on lots of training. Target training initially so it's less of an issue with biting. Sadly there's just too much to write on a topic like this and there could be so much going on that I can't cover! I have other videos on conures that may help! We also run a parrot behaviour consultation business called Best Behaved Birds, if you feel you'd like to get some more dedicated 1 on 1 advice.

@@TheParrotTeacher well, when she was on pellets when we first got her (because that’s what her previous owners fed, she would eat just about anything you gave her. (Including chicken) We researched all different foods for conures, then read the bag of pellets... NO MORE CORN! We chose Hemp seeds as they are as nutritionally balanced as possible. After a week on those, a good bit of her behaviour problems went away. We also give her Pistachios, cashews and walnuts. In summer we will give her veggies fresh from the garden and in winter, she gets home made dehydrated veggie pieces like squash. It’s surprising today, she’s actually been more clingy to me today and no biting... maybes she knows it’s my birthday... please believe me, my mom and I researched our butts off to find the most nutritious foods for her possible... and even some veggies will contribute to crabby behaviour. (No high starch or sugar foods) When we got her, she had really rough, scraggy feathers. (The owners were very good people but were becoming busy and were honest about her nipping) After giving her Hemp seeds (in shell and roasted) she’s been shedding And regrowing a lot of feathers. And she will actually refuse certain veggies now... she does like peppers but her faves are fresh squash (we avoid fruit for her but will give as a treat like, once a week) This June will be a year since we adopted her. I guess she still feels new to me. 😅 Thanks again for all the advice! I am going to look into more interactive toys and games for her... problem is, aside from musical pop cans, I can’t think what games she would play... ???

They seem real skittish and definitely won't come near my hand. Should I steer clear or take a chance?

I’m probably not the best person to ask on this particular topic as to me all of them can be trained and bonded with! The question to ask is if you want to put the time, training and effort in! All birds are individual and will also react differently in different environments! Even hand fed babies may be tougher to train than a parent reared bird in some situations!

My conure will cuddle...he also taps me with his wing. ..is that the beating/cuddling? I dont want to torture my bird by accidentally making him hormonal. He will move closer and tap me over and over. Is that ok? I only pet his head and neck.
@TheParrotTeacher3 жыл бұрын
Hey Redmond, Cuddling your conure is fine as it's a natural behaviour for them, especially if they don't have other conures to cuddle! However, yes it can sometimes trigger hormonal behaviour. The important thing in these situations is how you cuddle/for how long. When cuddling, it's best to do it to the side if using your hand rather than cupping from the back. From the back simulates mating. If they are cuddling your head, neck or other bits that's fine too, but like you're doing you need to watch for signs! Normally when a conure is getting frisky, they will make a high pitched growl or squeak over and over in combination with repeated and more pronounced wing beating. Relaxed wing beating is usually only one once or twice and with no sound They will also elevate their tails in a presenting posture. If you notice your conure doing this, it's best to remove them from the situation for a while or redirect their behaviour with some training or petting if they will let you. You can also look at other factors that might be making them hormonal and address those! My partner Sophie has a video on hormones on her channel that might help if you want to know more! You're technique for petting is great! Those are the spots to go for that simulate preening or friendly behaviour!

I'm so lucky my conure does all the things with me. She's got so much personality- I didn't think I'd like birds until my husband brought her home, and she snuggled me day ONE. It does play a lot with us, but at times it flies near the window(which is meshed) and will be in its own world looking outside and seeing other birds. Is there a way to avoid it or is it normal? I dont want it to be unhappy.
@TheParrotTeacher4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rakesh! The wanting to lean against is fairly normal as long as they aren't having trouble standing. They are very social birds and feel secure when leaning against something! The blabbering is also normal, they are very chatty and often like to do so! If they are just chatting to themselves then it's fine, if it's v.loud and with repetitive motions then it could be stress. It's likely wanting to look outside to see what's going on and look at the other birds! It's not a problem, but if you can make its environment more fun and interact more they may do it less! It doesn't sound like your little one is unhappy though based on what you've said!

Hello! I love your channel and I feel sooo good to know that my green checked conure shows most of these! :) One little question though, (asking cause you seem very informative and experienced), there is some dandruff like white stuff, coming out of his feathers? He sits on my lap, and he usually plucks (he does something with his head turned around 180 and dihs his beak in his back feathers, none come out tho) or even if he doesn't the white stuff is visible, it's just like how dandruff is (it isn't mine dw), should i be concerned?

Hey Ayesha, It depends on if he is moulting as feather casing can look a little like a dandruff like substance. It's also natural to have a little dust normally. If he is moulting or has recently moulted, a bit of extra "stuff" is fine. If it's just a little it's also fine. If neither of those and there's loads he could have a skin irritation which needs to be dealt with. Also plucking would mean he is actively pulling out his feathers (usually with a noise), preening is just grooming his feathers and removing loose ones! I have some more videos on my channel, including one on moulting which may be worth taking a peek at!

These are definitely not specific to conures

Hello there! You are correct, many of these behaviours are common across many Hookbills such as beak grinding, foot tucking etc etc However, some are not. You generally won't see a macaw or cockatiel cuddling or wing beating. The other reason this video is presented as such as generally people want to see the behaviours in the kind of parrot they are looking after. For example conure owners may not be that interested in seeing a cockatiel foot tucking etc.

I just got my first conjure ( I have been a quaker owner). First let me say how very different conjure is!! Now hope you can give me advise!!? My new conjure attached very quickly and extremely this is very nice but a bit of a problem as Loki insists on sleeping with me!!! Yes Karen's I'm very careful he sleeps I do not!! I'm not a new bird person have had several in my 55 yrs all types of small parrots never had issue I have tried to put cage beside my bed not good enough I've tried using a cozy all good as long as I'm holding!! If I leave in cage Loki hangs of bars all note head thrown back like necks broke and he makes pitiful sounds until I get him!! The first few notes he slept on perch all was good I'm not sure what has gone wrong just that he seemed to attach very fast and is not very thrilled unless he's being held or if he's wanting cage to eat or play. He's a yr old and bought from pet store where he has lived I guess a yr in a lil glass enclosure alone he has all credentials is healthy and seems very content and happy except at note. I can't continue staying awake all nite to hold him so he will sleep!! any advise is welcome as long as its helpful not hateful!! I so want him to be content day or nite!! Please help!

Hey there, It’s not uncommon for conures to suffer from separation anxiety. If I’m reading your message correctly he’s anxious to sleep alone. There are techniques to help but honestly it’s too much to go into in a comment. I do have other videos that discuss some of the topics you have mentioned and how to help them tohoigh so it may be worth exploring them
