that Walmart sign, so many people don't realize American bullet calibers have are in inches, .223 is 0.223 inches or 5.56mm. Also that's the diameter of the inside of the barrel not the diameter of the bullet. The bullet size is slightly smaller, but the exact amount smaller changes as bullets are made with greater precision. Older bullets were slightly smaller compared to the barrel because of the greater margin of error with older manufacturing techniques. As the margin of error lowers, the bullets can fit into the barrel more tightly and gain both better accuracy and speed.
