Wearing a turban has always been in the Sikh tradition from the time of Guru Nanak, but it was formalized by Guru Hargobind in declaration of sovreignty and royalty despite the fact that only kings at the time wore turbans. We can see that turbans signify royalty.
Turbans are one way that Sikhs are recognizable and distinct (Niara). Guru Gobind Singh gives his blessings to his Sikhs who remain Niara.
The turban also houses and protects the uncut hair (Kesh) coiled on the top of the head. The hair is tied at an important spiritual center on the body - the Dasam Duar (7th Chakra), and the turban contains the hair. The turban also crosses pressure points on the temples which help a person to be calm and centered.
Shanti Kaur encourages women to wear turbans because this is a tradition not based on gender but on the human body, and yet most Sikh women don't wear one. The turban is the insignia of a Sikh so that we have to stand out and be accountable for the values that we hold.

I totally agree with this. I've been wearing a turban for almost 2 years. & I notice a difference between wearing vs not wearing it. Although my mom still has a very hard time with me wearing it since she's "Bapticostal". (A mix of Baptist & Pentecostal). Although I'm still working on it.

I read a article about American Indians that joined the military and when they cut their hair their abilities to be scouts was lessoned. It went on to say long hair is like some kind of antenna for humans. I also have read that is wise to get a good hair trim after a bad experience. To cut off negative energy. Usually when s women would come in and want her hair cut short I always asked did you just break off a relationship? Usually the answer was yes. I used to be a barber. I had many male clients that worked in the local steel mill. Most all of them had balding from the hard hats they had to wear. Dead skin cells and oil have a much harder time shedding if you wear a head covering.

Thanks for the explanation. World cultures are all valid because they have deep, often practical and valid meaning. The diversity of human cultures is important, just as the diversity of nature is. I have come here from reading an article of bullying of s Sikh boy in the BBC News. The boy gave up his turban at 11 so as to stop being bullied in school and to be liked by girls. He then became more accepted in school but he lost himself. 20 years later he took up his turban and found peace with himself again. When he was without the turban he did not like the person he was, he was lost. Being who we are is more important than being 'accepted' by others. We should not give up who we are and our values and customs to please others. What matters is who we really are and are happy to be. Bullying is a terrible act of intolerance of others and others' cultures. It is an ignorant and terrible negation of diversity. Diversity is enriching. It must be stopped.

Some things they say are incorrect like yoga but this is TRUE In India, Turban has been essential and integral part of humans since times immemorial irrespective of religion. Thy do yoga bcoz their Yogi Bhajan installed Hindu practices in 3HO's. Even whn I discussed with 3HO ppls abt gurmat thy all starts nd stops at yoga nd white stuffs. when you say white sikh what does it mean 1) you are born to sikh parents who immigrated and that is how you are a sikh, but you would rather call yourself white sikh ! Guidance on sikhism then your parents can give you. 2) you converted from some other faith to Sikhism. Guidance can be given by whoever helped you convert. 3) out of nothing better to do, you started wearing a turban. Guidance then is find a purpose or something meaningful to do. If you have tried tested everything, you should start with reciting the prayer japji sahib.

she is a true religious sikh lady but i love my punjabi language. she pronounces the words in punjabi in western american style which i dont like. thats why we need our original punjabi sikhs to do the talking.
