Arunachala natham Ragam Saranga 65th Mela Janya Rupaka Talam Muthu Swami Dikshitar Krithi This Krithi is on Tiruvannamalai Arunachaleswarar Legend here goes that Shiva assumed the form of a huge column of fire, whose origins Bhramma and Vishnu failed to trace. The hill here is considered to be a manifestation of Shiva. Tiruvannamalai is one of the Panchabhoota Stalams signifying the 5 elements of wind (Kalahasti), water (Tiruvanaikka), fire (Tiruvannamalai), earth (Kanchipuram) and space (Chidambaram). Kartikai Deepam festival here is of great significance. Manikkavacakar composed his Tiruvempavai here.The Paatala Linga shrine is connected with the spritual savant Ramana Maharishi. Arunagiri Nathar began composing his Tiruppukazh here at this temple. In this kruti DIkshitar extoles the splendour and the divine effulgence of the Siva Lingam at the holy Arunachalam.He praises Siva the presiding lord for his limitless compassion.In Charanam guru guha tAra prasangam - praNava (OM) is known as 'tAraka'; Episode of subrahmaNya 'teaching' praNava to His father (Siva) is meant here. He shines with the effulgence of a million bright Suns and is the embodiment of supreme bliss. He is reputed for showering mercy profusely on a host of devatas. He weilds a deer on his powerful hand. He is like a hovering bee near Aparna who is beautiful like a lotus. He mounts on the sacred bull. He is the superior inner conscience of the learned. Valiant Shanmukha is dear to him. His matted locks shine with everflowing Ganga. He is the self effulgent lord of the Sun, the Moon, and the Fire. Saranga raga is a bhaashanga janya of 65th melakarta raga Mecha Kalyani.The raga finds its presence from as early as the 16th century. A: S R2 S P M2 P R2 G3 M2 P D2 N3 S Av: S N3 D2 P M2 R2 G3 M1 R2 S Shuddha Madhyama is the foreign note (Anya swara) which occurs in the raga in the RGM1RS prayoga. Minimal usage of this combination effectively brings out the raga.Prati Madhyama plays the lifeline of the Raga along with Rishabha,Gandhara,Dhaivatha and Nishadha. The raga can be elaborated between the nishada in the lower octave to gandhara in the higher octave. This raga demonstrates shringara,Bhakti,karuna and haasya rasas effectively.The raga is a vakra sampoorna raga, where the combinations SRGM,MGRS are not used directly.It has counterparts in Hindustani Music and the closest is Shudh Sarang and we will have compositions from both the systems. Saranga is such a sweet ragam that even a lay listener without any music background can enjoy it.

Gurucharan shines and excels , as always !What a soulful rendering ! Dikshitar would have applauded . Need I say more 🙏 Mayilai Karthikeyan's nadhaswaram accompaniment is a refreshingly bold experiment . So perfectly tuneful and providing a perfect foil for the singer, in a way never thought possible. Amazingly good ! Thanks to the the recording engineer who has done a masterful job of maintaining the perfect aesthetic level of nadhaswaram's volume .
