In the past few years, the federal government has cut funding to hundreds of renowned research institutes and programs. Ottawa has dismissed more than 2,000 federal scientists and researchers and has drastically cut or ended programs that monitored smoke stack emissions, food inspections, oil spills, water quality and climate change. Now some scientists have become unlikely radicals, denouncing what they call is a politically-driven war on knowledge. In Silence of the Labs, Linden MacIntyre tells the story of scientists - and what is at stake for Canadians - from Nova Scotia to the B.C. Pacific Coast to the far Arctic Circle.

Whoever fired Pat Sutherland and told her to vacate her office in five minutes should be repeatedly slammed in the face with a baseball bat. Her ground-breaking research on an early Viking/Norse presence in Arctic Canada is amazing, and it was awful for her to be fired.

+John J Better yet, throw that dirty rat bag who fired Pat Sutherland (and asked her to vacate her office) in jail. Let those in prison beat the crap out of him, anyway. Pat devoted so much of her time to research as to the early Viking and Norsemen presence in Arctic Canada, and it is something we shall all never forget. I would love to learn so much of what she has put into because this is something I hope anyone of us can anyone of can digest inside our minds as part of our lifetime learning experience.

+ John J My wife's first field prof said, "If I say 'that, NOW' it's not personal. It would be the same as my brain sending through my CNS the electric pulse that would tell my right hand to catch. You are my right arm." They were also working with the brown bear population where the instruction "NOW" could mean the difference between a big sow having a cuddle and a kiss with you or not. If hard talk got Dr. Pat Sutherland's research tanked I've got a safe space for the suck asses reported her in the back of my van, and plenty of candy. This Empire can't burn too soon for my liking.

ALL media is a joke when it puts policy before safety and the welfare of the environment. On that note - Climate Change is a fraud being used to push more taxes onto the public for a problem that we never caused because it always existed before we started burning fossil fuels. Not only that but the Co2 level was up around 2000 ppm and it resulted in a richer plant growth. CC is just another con pushed by those making money off the FEAR of it all. Sideling from that - I`m somewhat of a conservationist myself and am appalled at the number of areas also being poisoned by Coal Seam Gas in places that were lush and green forestation till greedy people came along. Some of those areas are in the Amazon where populations are now dying of cancers never seen before in those areas just so some psychopaths can line their pockets.

"Science has many faces many agendas and many sponsors with many different services and product agendas. A double edge sword that does great harm or great good for the people. A lot of Government pork projects that should be scrapped or should never see any light. Public funding TAX Payer Funding and independent funding can never financially compete against industrial commercial funding ever. A lot of patented products will use science studies to sell the product after FDA approval. The products in question can do good or not so good for the consumer market place that science is being used to serve or not to serve for all humanity. Not long ago people laughted at the idea of something as huge as the Pacific Ocean could become polluted enough to harm ocean life. People hauled barge load after barge load of garbage to dump in the deeper water. Ships dumped all their garbage in international water. Many ships around Canadian waters dumped in sight of shores. Including their used oil.. Then Japan had Fukishima, which they lied about so no one could clean it up properly. Now it's to late. We know some of Long Island s accident but we never know the truth.

Daniel Detweiler And how would you feel about further funding for the Norse in Canada project? My guess is Trudeau will be equally politically expedient in his funding off academia. The problem is that your research institutions rely on so much federal funding. In the US most of our research institutions are working off endowments and grants - not annually budgeted direct funding.

I remember in that time period I was seeing a lot about Texaco and their contamination to on of the rivers which runs into the Amazon River...then the ocean. The tribes that ask if the water was safe were lied to. Many of the people began to become ill with illnesses that had never been known of. Eventually they sued Texaco in a California court. That was keep quiet and the Amazon videos were removed from the internet and in the middle Texaco sold out.

No politician will accept destruction of jobs/ economy. Therefore Scientists must FIND & PROPOSE SCIENTIFIC solutions on how to exploit ALL resources in such a way as to control & minimize pollution to acceptable levels BUT still allows for jobs to continue & new job creation & growth & productivity etc. E.g if industry is polluting the air or water how can that same industry continue to thrive & grow using better inexpensive technology that deals with pollutants effectively? A scientific solution provides harmony & mutual respect & support between politicians & scientists & society in general.

This is what a civilization gets when most of its citizens do not pay attention to what politicians are really doing to legitimate government institutions. This is what a civilization gets when people do not even KNOW what constitutes legitimate and illegitimate government. Fascism takes over. Corporatism takes over. Corporatism IS FASCISM. This is what happens when most people flock to own each latest technological toy corporations put out; every gadget, every piece of shiny "thing" anyone can spend their hard earned funds on..... his is what happens when a civilization doesn't appreciate the hardest working among us who hold it all together for less than politicians and drug runners make with their criminal enterprises. This is what one gets when most people exalt those who are rich without questioning HOW they got rich..... This is what one gets ..... This is what one gets when most are asleep at the wheel of living....and cannot recognize their own National Flag...

When publicly funded research becomes "YOURS" ... when a scientist cant separate their political activism from their research, and the ego feeds off a "savior of the planet" complex... see a shrink

Well for years scientists were content to do the research on focused issues without concern for how their research would be used, and most of them when they figured out how it was being used, didn't speak out for fear of losing their standing in the research feeding trough. So...now they are surprised and outraged that the ones with the deep pockets are pulling the plug on all or most research grants? What did they think a clearly corrupt system would do once they (the research scientists and microbiologists, etc.) were no longer required because the govt. had enough power, knowledge and technology to shut the whole of humanity into totalitarian dictatorship in which no one will be allowed to question govt. or even to do any genuine research all encompassing instead of being mere technicians (a travesty of the use of their Science degrees) turning in only a minuscule aspect of the total picture they couldn't be less interested in before. just saying...

Canada is a wonderful country. However, they have to come to realization that this land belongs to the Natives. Lets not hide this or continue ignoring it. We as Canadians are proud of our country. Lets keep our Heritage alive.

huh? those assets are land locked! Majority of the employees are Canadian and the remainder live in Canada, pay taxes in Canada....foreign direct investment ensures those sectors are well capitalized and *NOT* driven to cost cutting via 'right-sizing' There's no difference.........lol what do yu think has changed? Do you think prior to foreign ownership those companies were *NOT* exporting? lol or do you think remaining profits were kept in Canada? lol they were either paid out to a handful of shareholders, many of whom are large foreign investors, kept with the company via stock buy backs, or invested in US equity or government bonds... don't reply unless you got proof something material has changed since ownership. When i say credible, i mean from a credible source....not brietbart, a blog, by credible I mean, government agency, *National* or *international* media conglomerates (excluding opinion section articles i.e. non-employees of that organisation. As-in written or presented by people with zero accountability to that news media or Gov agency, with disclaimers like ►views of author do NOT represent blah blah Just so you are fully clear, a credible source meas: Companies that hold a diverse mix of television, cable television, radio, newspaper, magazine, and/or internet operations OR have a high *National*/*International* market share in only two of the aforementioned mediums e.g. print and online. the local paper from say Victoria County in Nova Scotia, Canada is *NOT* a credible source examples of what would be a credible source: Statistics Canada, Bank of Canada, CBC, Postmedia, Toronto Star, Huffington Post, Buzzfeed BBC,, the Guardian, New York Times Unless you can cite a credible source, supporting your claim foreign direct investment and/or ownership has had a material impact on the Canadian economy as a whole...then *DO NOT REPLY*

"examples of what would be a credible source: Statistics Canada, Bank of Canada, CBC, Postmedia, Toronto Star, Huffington Post, Buzzfeed BBC,, the Guardian, New York Times" I applied your dictatorial rules to the Breitbart Wikipedia entry. It would appear to invalidate almost 87% of what is cited there, applying your demanded citation criteria. Kinda funny how that came around to bite you in your Harry v' Jah , huh?

At 15:50 Dr Phillips is half wrong and later being very objective and neutral. Scientists can and do tell "us" what thresholds are acceptable to maintain human health. >5ppm of blah blah in the water is harmful to the point that a person's life will be uncomfortably shortened or harmed. I imagine that the administrators decided that there was now sufficient evidence collected and that the Gummint would now act on it - or not.

I think the current generations of scientists had taken for granted the supports the public and private sectors given to science. You might think it's a right and it's important science is supported. The truth is science has been only interesting to the ruling class if it is about making weapons. The scientists need to start thinking like the artists, it's a privilege given to them by their fellow countrymen to do what they do. Most of what the scientists produce end up in journal papers that no one reads, just like most of what artists produce end up in the incinerator or the dump.
