Well technically, to use a silencer (suppressor) efficiently, you would also have to use sub-sonic ammunition. Subsonic means that the bullet will now travel below the speed of sound, so you don't produce a cracking sound from breaking the sound barrier. So while a suppressor alone does not reduce damage done, or reduce the range of the bullet. The subsonic ammunition does. Less gunpowder means less energy. Meaning the bullet will travel slower but still fall to the ground at the same speed. Meaning you decrease the maximum range of the bullet, and since it has less energy, it also has less penetrating capabilities. Less likely to penetrate armor and because of that it does less damage. The suppressor suppresses the sound of the expanding gasses. The subsonic ammunition suppresses the sound of the bullet. And trust me, a .22 can be suppressed to be almost dead silent, all you hear is the mechanics of the gun and the bullet hitting its target.

Silencer/Suppressor does suppress or silence the muzzle blast because it retains the hot expanding gas inside the silencer that it will not come out to meet the outside atmospheric pressure to cause a cracking sound like that of the thunder resulting from the spark of lightning due to the meeting of the cold and hot atmosphere. What the silencer can not suppress is the cracking sound caused by a speeding bullet traveling beyond the sound barrier like the sound cause by a jet traveling beyond the speed of sound.

The device was invented by Hiram Maxim. He named them "Silencers". The term "suppressor" came much later.

How do you calculate the inner diameter of the silencer, for example a .308win rifle?

ALBERTO EMILIO Ridella diameter of bullet, plus a few thousandths for tolerances. every manufacturer will run their tolerances differently. the Ops MK12 is probably a .226 dia hole, where as a Gemtech halo would need to be greater to account for ammunition and the method of mounting (slipping over a flash hider never designed with precision tolerances in mind)

Was bummed to learn how loud they still are on an AR15, takes a 167 decibel ear splitting sound ALL THE WAY DOWN to 144 decibel still pretty ear splitting sound. With the subsonic ammo they are pretty good though, AND you have to go through the background check like getting your CCW AND pay $200 for a tax stamp. Ridiculous!

A 23 dB reduction of the sound pressure level is a 93% reduction of the sound pressure. 144dB is really loud but it's a lot better than 167 dB.

Thats why if you ever wanna buy a silencer for a gun you buy it for a smaller caliber. That way you get more bang (or should I say less) for you buck. 22lr are probably the best to suppress since most silencer decrease the db by 30, making the firing action close to 125db.

Hypothetically speaking, lets say a 22 goes at the same velocity as a 223. It would still be quieter in decibel, due to few factors. Smaller bullet size, less mas flying through the air and lesser amount of gun powder explosion.

silencers increase accuracy because of barrel harmonic dampening. and they don't make firearms hearing safe. the crack of the bullet is loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage with exposure. subsonic ammo is needed to cause the weapon to be truly hearing safe.

A lot of angry people in the comments who, likely after just watching a video on youtube explaining this to them, felt the need to come here and say that 'it's a suppressor, not a silencer'. Congratulations on seeing the same Factverse and WatchMojo videos as everyone else here on youtube... It's funny, really; how people will act like a superior intellect for repeating something they just learned 5 minutes prior. Heres a real lesson for you folks: Yes, firearms can be 'Hollywood quiet' as long as you use subsonic ammunition COMBINED with a suppressor. Now, some cartridges are not widely available in subsonic, but for those that are (such as .45 ACP), the results can be surprising. Of course, it's not 'silent', but it's damn close to it. Occasionally, what you hear in Hollywood movies is a real gun firing blank rounds (which, due to the lack of any projectile, have the same effect as firing subsonic ammunition). Where this myth that all gun sounds in movies are fake came from, I have no idea. It is often true, but it is certainly not ALWAYS true, especially when filming takes place in the USA where firearms are easily obtained. Sorry, but these 'Top 10' "fact" channels on youtube are taken too seriously. You realize half of these channels are run by crack-smoking college dropouts, right? Kids these days act like 'Vsauce' is their fucking teacher feeding them mindless, incomplete, often inaccurate "facts". How about you go and get a real education?! There isn't any. The gunpowder is converted to gasses that expand in the barrel before the bullet exits the barrel or the action cycles.

Dracular Drac gun powder doesn't detonate (explode) it delegates (burns rapidly), causing an expanse of gases, which build up pressure behind the resistance of the projectile.

No, he didn't forget to mention anything, you just don't understand physics. You cannot hear the gunpowder igniting because it takes place inside a closed chamber. What you hear is the result of the high-pressure gas created as the powder burns exiting the barrel, as well as the shockwave created by the bullet itself. Gunpowder doesn't even 'explode', actually. It burns in the chamber as volume behind the bullet increases. This all takes place very rapidly of course, but it isn't an 'explosion'. The only thing that really explodes is the small primer.
