It is called silencer in British English and muffler in American English, the same thing. What I like about Lesics videos is that they make you realize the problem, understand the fundamental causes, and then show you step-by-step how to find a practical solution. This is the best way to start teaching science and engineering. Of course, the details must be learned from textbooks and other references, but the concept must be clear first. A big thank you to Lesics Team.

Yup, your last point is the most important. Learn engineering doesn't even try to teach us calculation forms (or whatever they are called), actual numerical values or complicated theories. No one would watch these videos if such things were involved. The point of Learn engineering is to teach us the engineering principles and basics of certain actual real-life items, and it succesfully does so.

when you realise that this is completely wrong...(completely inaccurate analogy) Air particals never stays at same position neither they want to come back at same position, Air particals always move in different directions and collide with other Air particals, their movement will always be random to observer, the sound is just more collisions in a perticular area, the collision then collide with nearby surrounding particals in all directions and since there are countless other particals these collisions fades out after a while, meaning collisions transfer to more and more particals.

As an Acoustic Engineer (1 out of only 5 in Australia), who designs silencers for super large mining dump trucks n dozers, I really enjoyed this video. However, this video is more about generation of noise and much less about ‘how muffler or silencer’ works. Also the description about how fibreglass works in absorbing sound waves is wrong. Plus the video only talks about one type of muffler and that too the simplest form. The one you explained is a simple ‘dissipative’ type. Most cars n motorcycles dont even have these. Fibreglass doesnt last long enough to be used in vehicle mufflers. Reactive mufflers are used instead.

@Phyjix

@@pepe6666 thats not how sound works, (see last part) i m not an engineer but i think muffler sould make air particals collide more and more randomly with flexible material which absorbs these collisions which sould produce more heat since heat is also just collisions. these should work much more like the triangular fome that sound studios use. [ about Sound ] "they used completely inaccurate analogy Air particals never stays at same position neither they want to come back at same position, Air particals always move in different directions and collide with other Air particals, their movement will always be random to observer, the sound is just more collisions in a perticular area, the collision then collide with nearby surrounding particals in all directions and since there are countless other particals these collisions fades out after a while, meaning collisions transfer to more and more particals."

Interestingly enough, most internal combustion motors require some level of back pressure to operate correctly. I, and my friends, learned this in high school when we removed the mufflers (“silencers”) from our hot rods in order to get more horsepower, and instead saw diminished power…

what is the reason we need back pressure, i mean it just makes the exhaust gas back to the cylinder. i believe the reduce in power when you removed the mufflers was because you also reduce the exhaust scavenging, and therefore the exhaust gas from a combustion that happens from another combustion didn't get sucked completely
@DanielinLaTuna
@DanielinLaTuna 2 жыл бұрын
If there's no back pressure, the fresh air and fuel will not only sweep out the exhaust gasses, but they will also begin to exit with the exhaust gas, resulting in a loss of fuel and air which reduces efficiency. If the back pressure is too high, the exhaust gasses can't all be removed by the fresh charge.

@@techalyzer most likely you’re still getting the choking effects from the catalytic converters. Reducing back pressure is a winning strategy, in many cases; that’s why large bore exhaust systems with properly tuned mufflers work. That's the design with the cambers, that is used in suppressors for guns. The advantage is that it lasts much longer and it's much more sturdy (that's why its used for guns). On the downside it's heavier and needs more volume, that's why it's usually not used on motorcycles anymore. * He should have also explained that. * Furthermore ("sport") mufflers for motorbikes are often created to break partially down after a short period of time and make much more noise then they're supposed to. That's much harder with the sturdy design.

@@peeqo either you didn't understand the guy or you didn't understand the video. Exhaust pulses are caused by the difference in pressure between the cylinder and the exhaust duct, not the combustion process itself. Since a good part of the thermal energy released is used as work, exhaust sound compounds a small portion of the energy that is rejected by the engine.
@captainotto
@captainotto Жыл бұрын
It's worth mentioning that a significant portion of the sound energy is radiated through the engine. Those combustion pulses do propagate through the walls of the engine, especially when it comes to air cooled engines. This is immediately obvious when you put an exhaust duct into a bucket of water. The remaining noise observed is now mostly due to radiation directly from the cylinder block and head, which themselves are vibrating just like the air, albeit in a much lesser form.

When I saw the title, "Silencers..." I thought you were referring to the type that are attached to the muzzle of a firearm, also known a suppressor. And, while glass pack mufflers are used on some automobiles (and possibly motorcycles) they generally have less sound suppression and longevity than those that use baffles and chambers to capture, slow, and even out the high pressure pulses in sounds.

This explains glass packs, and without you knowing it, gun suppressors. This video is actually about the ones you put on guns, not mufflers on an infernal combustion engine. Most silensers (in the UK and AUS, their spelling too) or mufflers use baffles and chambers to make them quieter. Imagine a very crowded room, and suddenly a group of people rush in one door and try to get out another. There are no exit signs and the doors are not in sight. As the group bumps into all these people already in the room, they lose all their initiative, and start chatting up the good looking people. That's a muffler. Oh they find their way out eventually, with the help of security.
@kkhalifah1019
@kkhalifah1019 Жыл бұрын
Stock silencers are always the baffle type as it is the quietest because it doesn't provide a direct flow for the exhaust. The exhaust and sound get bounced around the different baffled compartments before they exit. This absorption type is always the preferred aftermarket replacement since it allows a direct, straight path to the exit for the exhaust, increasing flow and noise while reducing weight through its simpler construction.

A SILENCER ON A GENERATOR WOULD BE NICE!
@rockets4kids
@rockets4kids 2 жыл бұрын
Most generators do have silencers. The problem is that the ones fitted to most small generators aren't very good. But the reason those mufflers aren't very good is because the block itself also generates considerable noise. This is because portable generators need to be light. If the engine block was thicker it would be quieter, but then it would be heavier. And also more expensive. You could put the entire generator inside of a soundproof box, but then you would need to tap energy from the generator to drive a fan to keep the inside of the box cool. So now you are adding weight, and cost, and reducing efficiency. Then there are even more complicated issues such as needing to maintain a constant RPM regardless of load in order to maintain 60 Hz output frequency. You could add an inverter here, but again that adds cost and limits peak power output.

Main explanation is wrong: Sound reduction works exactly because sound pressure wave DO NOT travel with the fluid, but better they travel into it and way faster than it. As sound waves enter the muffler they start to expand also into the rockwool part and bounce everywhere at 550 m/s (speed of sound at 500 °C). The multiple swirls the air does into the rockwool cavities and passages "activates" the viscosity of the air, this way in part sound cancels out and in part transfer its kinetic energy to the rockwool fibers. As consequence sound is absorbed and dissipated in its propagation through the silencer. This causes the overall sound reduction.

Or, in a furnished room, the sound does not echo, but the bath also echoes. In the same way, wool is placed on the back of a speaker so that the sound pressure at the rear does not affect the front.

That's why 4 valves; 2 Intake 2 Exhaust in 1 Cylinder is very important as it offers more intake outake output to improve engine performance.
