There are 3 parallax cloud scrolls, where as the GEN has 2. As well as water transparency, and a bit less dithering here and there. I'd say either the Sega CD or PSX versions are the best though.

The version for the Genesis has some more items as in the phase changes when a circle opens and in the opening of the first stage where it appears film roll design. In 6:56 the flaming torches are in more quantities and more alive in Genesis. In Sega Genesis is played several times the exclusive effect of Mode 7 of Super Nintendo. In Super Nintendo this effect is reduced. Mickey on Genesis is a little faster. At 41:56 in Mode 7 effect is noticeable the superiority of the Sega Genesis processor. But at 19:10 Super Nintendo is better with its lighting effect and more simultaneous color capability. In this game SEGA was better than Nintendo.

SNES version has more technical limitations than what some people think. For start it runs in lower resolution (Mega Drive = 320x224 pixels while SNES = 256x224) meaning smaller playfield +, when played on TV, wrong aspect ratio/deformed visuals and less sharp picture. Then SNES version not only lacks 1 stage but also lacks tons of visual effects (animations; parallax...) + lacks some sound samples + has some slowdowns + has some (quite long) loadings... On other hand it has more scrolling planes in a few instances and, yeah, real transparency is nice but dithering-based transparency was common thing back then and works fine enough, even the Neo Geo, released 1 year and a half after the Mega Drive, still relies on dithering or flickering for most transparency effects (BTW: 1° the Mega Drive can also do real transparency by using its shadow/highlight mode for example and 2° SNES also relies on dithering/flickering-based transparency for many games...). So overall the Mega Drive version of Mickey Mania has a slight edge in quality and a huge edge in quantity, in short it's an izi win. And as if it wasn't enough, there's also a Mega-CD version which improves/expands over the already impressive Mega Drive one (there's also a PS1 version but it's another story and, IMO, the 16-bit versions have more merits given respective hardwares).

In this very example we can see dithering on SNES at 31:31.
@KuraIthys
@KuraIthys 7 жыл бұрын
Some of this results from sloppy programming, some of it is the consequences of lazy porting. Particularly aspect ratio problems. Both consoles when shown on real hardware and real TV's output 4:3 images, or close to it. The actual resolutions of both systems (including overscan and sync signals) is somewhere in the region of 360 by 262.5 for NTSC or 360 by 312.5 for PAL. But the active display area is typically 320 x 224 on the mega drive and 256x224 on the snes, and that's where ports become a massive problem. The extra 74 pixels don't really matter as such. The real disaster comes from both having a 4:3 aspect ratio in spite of different screen resolutions. And both use 8x8 or 16x16 background tiles, and 8x8 to 64x64 sprites. But if there are 320 vertical lines on a mega drive, and only 256 on an snes, yet all the actual graphics drawn are the same size (8x8 to 64x64) how can they ever have the same aspect ratio? Unfortunately, the answer lies in that the mega drive draws square pixels, and the snes draws pixels that are wider than they are tall. (about 1.25: to 1) A 32 pixel snes sprite therefore should be drawn as 40 pixels on the mega drive, while a 32 pixel megadrive sprite should be drawn as 25.6 on the snes. Unfortunately, neither system likes doing this even slightly. (especially not with background tiles), so unless you redraw the entire set of graphics completely (and presumably you can't really do this and have the games look all that similar), one or the other of the systems is going to have weird looking graphics. Snes graphics will look fatter than they should, mega drive graphics will look thinner than they should. Which ends up looking wrong depends on which system you started with if you share graphics between both. The Mega Drive has a slight edge here in being able to do 256x224 output as well, meaning if accuracy of a port is your goal, you can use this to help you out a lot. As for extra animations/levels and so on, there are plenty of snes games that demonstrate that they have more content than the mega drive versions do. In reality this should theoretically be the norm because the cartridge address space on the snes is actually substantially larger. (only 4 of the 16 megabyte address space of a genesis is mapped to the cartridge slot, while the entire 16 megabyte address space of the snes is mapped to it, and only where stuff like the system RAM and registers interfere do you have to worry about it.) The Sega CD changes this of course, but since it has a whole heap of extra hardware in it this is like comparing an unaided super nintendo with one that has the Fastest version of the SuperFX chip in it. I would actually argue the snes can do better than it is often given credit for in these comparisons. Unfortunately it seems there weren't many good snes programmers. Those in the homebrew community can pretty much verify that if there is slowdown on an snes due to how many sprites are showing, this isn't a hardware issue, it's poor programming technique. The more I look into these two systems in fact, the more they start to look pretty similar. Yes, their strengths are in somewhat different areas, but on the whole, what one can do, the other can usually do as well. As for the extra chips in the cartridges, that was by design. It was planned that way from the start, so saying it needed them to compete when using the system that way was how it was designed... I mean, in 1996 an N64 could kick a PC's ass because it had hardware 3d acceleration, but it would be highly stupid to suggest that a 3d accelerator card in a PC was somehow a failure of the PC design, and that therefore the N64 was better because it didn't need 'extra hardware' to compete... The capability to routinely use extra hardware is simply how some systems were designed. Is the Mega Drive worse than the Master System because there was a game built into most Master Systems but not into the mega drive? That's a stupid example, right? For that matter, why did the mega drive end up with the SVP chip to run Virtua Racing, the Sega CD, (call it what you will, bit in many ways it's the same concept as the expansion chips in an snes cartridge), and worst of all the 32x, which again is the same idea but taken to ridiculous extremes in the rather foolish hopes that a Mega Drive could somehow remain competitive against the playstation, N64 and even Sega's own Saturn...

+KuraIthys 4:3 is the TV ratio, the resolution that both consoles output is 320x224 for the Genesis and 256x224 for the SNES, so only the Genesis has a ratio close to TV while SNES ends with stretched visuals, everytime. The only possibility to avoid stretched visuals on SNES is to take its low resolution into consideration when doing graphics by anticipating stretching to come with thinner graphics than expected but it's rather akward to do and this also means less detailed graphics (due to lower amount of pixels) which is why most of the time developers didn't take this into consideration and most SNES games have stretched (i.e. deformed) graphics once displayed on TV. As for extra stuff in most Genesis multiplat, it's mostly due to graphic format, packed (Genesis) vs planar (SNES), and planar takes more space + fact that SNES use samples for sound which also takes more space. You talked about homebrew, but I know someone who is into homebrew scene and himself know someone who is into SNES emulators development and both say that SNES is quite messy hardware, I don't think for example that it can display 128 sprites as it's supposed to be able to. SNES spec sheet is rather misleading anyway... Oh and, SNES might have been designed with additional chips into some cartridges to expand its possibilities but SNES final spec are weaker than expected, Pilotwings wasn't supposed to use an additional chip but they had to do so due to aforementioned reason. IMO SNES has some interesting features, mainly its sample-based sound chip which is handy (but not without its flaws) and its Mode 7 which provides games such as F-Zero hardly feasible on others systems of the time, but other than that, I much prefer Genesis qualities (better CPU, higher resolution, better sprites handling...). Also I take a CD add-on over chips into cartridge ANY DAY, once again much more interesting.

About "detail", omg, all the people talking and don's seeing something so obvious: The Genesis version is running with an emulator without any filter applied (you can see the individual pixels as squares), the SNES is applying a bluring filtering (you CAN'T see the pixels as perfect squares, and no, the "lesser resolution" hasn't nothing about this issue, the pixel can be more wider or higher, but perfectly defined as the Genesis version, is it? nope, is a "round thing that sees as a type of square", so it's a blurring filter). So, if you don't take care of things like this (I don't understand WHY the youtuber of this video is using very different postprocessing filters with both "machines", that's not make sense except... some idea about making to see the Genesis version as more crispy). The sound is a very rotund point to the SNES version, no discussion about this except you are completely deaf. In graphics, better and more colours in many times with SNES (some animations in the background, candels, etc), but Genesis is very equivalent with SNES version. Very similar fluidity, maybe a little point for the Genesis but the games are very equals in the main categories except sound. Ok, if SNES lacked some stages (that you can evaluate that with this video, it's a extra point to the Genesis version). So at the end, it's about if you want better sound or more stages with similar experience and playability. Or simpler, what system you have/prefer. About transparency, the dithering with SNES (interpolating data of a sprite with a weight against the background pixel) it's the better option to doing advanced transparency effects in 2d games (translucency that you can configure from opaque to transparency), Mega Drive hasn't true transparency effects, it's for this that it uses massive bad dithering effects (that are a shame, you know, using a weaving effect for doing "transparency" it isn't transparency at all, and you can saw that bad and simple effect in many of the 8bit microcomputers, it's so cheap!, every systema that doesn't have some weird configuration about their graphic modes (like Altwasser's technic that you can find in speccy) can do it).

Yeah, it seems a bit like that. All the things you expect to be there on Genesis are, both the good (all the stuff that's good, and nice use of line scrolling for faux parallax at times) and the bad (less colours, lack of proper transparency and few background layers in some levels). All the things you expect to be there on SNES sometimes aren't (more layers in some areas, proper transparency in some areas, the same amount of animation frames and animation speed, line scrolling alongside the additional background layers at times, some of the random details like torch flames in some areas or the snow outside on the last boss fight, etc). The SNES version really should have had everything in the Genesis version plus the extra colours, extra background layers and proper transparency.

@inceptional
@inceptional 2 жыл бұрын
It literally was. The developer already admitted they rushed the SNES version out slightly and had more time on the Genesis version to really add that extra layer of polish. Also, you can easily see this is a Genesis game ported to SNES rather than a game made to take full advantage of the SNES: Most of the levels that could use three background layers don't, there's rarely many more colours in the SNES game when it could have technically had up to four times as many colours in every single level, there's moments where transparency wasn't used but could have been such as on the ghosts on one level, etc. This game actually could and really should have been even better on SNES that it was and ultimately better than the Genesis version almost across the board.

I think the Mega Drive is pushing a lot harder than the SNES though, which is why the Mega Drive is getting all the praise. Like the Mosse chase floor textures are ever so slightly more random and detailed on the SNES, the fact that effect is achieved at all on the MD is just fantastic. Overall both versions are fantastic! And till this day it’s the best looking 2D Mickey game, and wouldn’t look out of place as an Indy game on the Switch or something. The Mega Drive's YM2612 sound chip has a sound output of 53 kHz, higher than the Super Nintendo's S-DSP which has a 32 kHz output, giving the YM2612 a wider frequency range. The S-DSP also uses Gaussian filtering, which eliminates noise by cutting-off the lowest and highest frequencies, at the expense of further limiting the frequency range, creating a muffled sound. The Mega Drive's greater frequency range, on the other hand, provides sharper audio clarity, but with more noise heard at at the highest frequencies, while a lowpass filter reduces noise at the lowest frequencies on both systems (with the Super Nintendo's Gaussian filter further reducing noise at the expense of muffling).

True, there are (very few) things missing. I however, talk about the quality of what is there. One missing music tune doesn't turn the overall quality. A much softer and more diverse color palette in all of the game is definetely more of an advantage than one more music tune. See Rock n Roll Racing. RRR has one more tune on the genesis, but the SNES Original still has way superior sound and graphics quality.- and is clearly the better version.

The Genesis in general seemed to own these Disney licensed games. Almost makes you wonder if Sega almost built the Genesis around these games coming in future. What's interesting here is if you pause at 3:18, the SNES and Mega Drive seemed to swap colour focus between foreground and background. Overall the SNES has more vibrant colour (as usual) and a cleaner more synthesised soundtrack, but I think the Mega Drive bossed on overall detail and shading on the artwork as usual.

There are a lot of multiplatform games that look, sound, and play better on the Genesis vs. the SNES. I love how SNES and Nintendo fans have to sneak in their little jabs and justifications. "Yeah well erm not in this case but USUALLY snark this is strange". Yeah looks like you've never played Pit Fighter, Samurai Shodown, Thunder Spirits, Robocop vs. Terminator, Beavis and Butthead, Hard Drivin, Out of this World, Earth Worm Jim, Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, Toy Story, to name a few, all games that are superior on the Genesis. Just get off your stupid Fanboy delustion and realize that the Genesis hardware was superior to SNES in some ways, the SNES superior in other ways, and realize that both systems are great and each has it's share of superior games and amazing exclusives. Enough of this stupid fanboy nonsense.

I always loved playing Toejam & Earl Panic on Funkotron vs any of the games my friend had on his SNES... I love the Genesis and all it's games, and yes I have played all the games you have mentioned and own them. I am just saying that SNES games usually looked better and sounded a little better when it came to comparisons on the same game for both platforms. But this game is just way better than the SNES version, it's like the first time I see a Genesis game butcher a SNES game. I never said I was a fan of either, thats what you assumed. And while I'm going through this anyway, notice how there is a rotating tower section on the mega drive which is not on the snes? You could naively claim this is because the snes can't do it, but chrono trigger would prove you wrong immediately. In short, don't take what you see in a single game as conclusive proof of what hardware is capable of. It's often more a case of 'couldn't be bothered to code it' than 'we can't do it'. Especially in snes and mega drive comparisons.

Same happens with ttransparencies... Supposedly, Mega Drive couldn't do transparencies, but you can see them in Myckey Great ircus Mistery, same as in Sonic games, in water. Sometimes, programmers surpassed videoconsoles' limits with a lot of work and well-elaborated codes. So, both consoles could do a lot of things that usually people said it was exclusive from one console or another; but it was solely with well refined programming. Then... can they do all those things? Yep. Can they EASILY do it, so that any programming team can use it? I think not. But, there they are. :D And it's good they forced the machines ^^
@inceptional
@inceptional 3 жыл бұрын
@@HaidesTunicaRoja The Genesis can't do proper transparencies; it can do a few tricks in very limited ways to fake transparency. The SNES can do proper transparency on both backgrounds and sprites, to any level of transparency and on any shape, and can even change the opacity in real time. Bosses can fade in and out of existence, semi-transparent clouds can move across the entire screen, transparent water can move and wave around with irregular shapes on the surface, random objects can be made to look like they are made of glass or jelly or smoke with ease, etc. SNES has transparency as a built in feature that comes at almost no cost, and it can even be used to increase the colour count to the full 32,000+ the system has (in a totally useless use-case, but still possible). The Genesis can trick people like you into thinking it can do full proper transparency, and in some limited-use cased it even ends up being pretty much the same thing as real transparency in how the end result looks, but that's about it. One 100% of the time could and a lot of the time does, the other 99% of the time can't and doesn't.

I best most people don't realise there's actually plenty of things that are better in the SNES version. Compare the lighting vignette effect around the player in the Genesis version to the SNES version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4bWe3Wkd9Sseck Compare the water effect on the Genesis version to the SNES version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4bWe3Wkd9Sseck Notice the additional full layer of background clouds plus the additional colours on the plants, seeds and apple there on SNES compared to the Genesis version (and it's still nowhere near taking proper full advantage of the 4x as many colours SNES can put on-screen): kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4bWe3Wkd9Sseck Again, the extra layer of clouds on SNES and nicer colours in the butterflies: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4bWe3Wkd9Sseck Notice the just nicer colours on SNES in this scene: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4bWe3Wkd9Sseck Notice the additional layer of stars, moon an added snow in this scene on SNES: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4bWe3Wkd9Sseck Notice the additional far background layer of parallax here on SNES: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4bWe3Wkd9Sseck Notice how there's both the far background and rising flames as well as the tower on SNES, whereas on Genesis it's missing the far background: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4bWe3Wkd9Sseck The main reason the game isn't noticeably better on SNES in even more areas is because Traveller's Tales was/is a hardcore Genesis fan and always put just that little bit more time and energy into really pushing and polishing the Genesis versions of its games. Also, the SNES version was released early while the Genesis version had more time in the oven to add a few things here and there that also could have been in the SNES version too. That's the reason the extra whirlwind level is in there for example, as it was a last minute addition to the Genesis build afforded by that extra development time. Pretty much everything that's better about the Genesis version is due to more time and polish, and pretty much everything that's better about the SNES version is due to the SNES actually being technically more capable in those particular areas. But, the one thing the Genesis will pretty much always have over SNES with games like this is more horizontal view. If you pay attention, however, you'll notice they made a more dynamic camera on SNES to make up for the lower horizontal view somewhat, where it actually moves further ahead of the player in the direction they're facing to show as much of the level ahead as possible. It's a compromise on SNES for sure, but it works well enough, and funnily enough even actually results in the player seeing a bit more of the level ahead of the player than in the Genesis version sometimes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4bWe3Wkd9Sseck Lastly, this game is another example of a SNES title that is stuck in SlowROM [accidentally] at only 70% of the system's full CPU speed. So even there it could be improved further too. ROM hacker Maxwel actually made a FastROM patch, which improves the speed of the game in quite a few areas. Ultimately though, as it is, the Genesis version is just overall the better of the two.

In the long run, I'm starting to think that ports are the worst possible things to really use to work out what a system was capable of. Many were designed with one system's abilities in mind then shoehorned into the other, usually with lazy, sloppy programming and minimal adaptations to the graphics, in spite of how differently the systems behaved. Which version ended up being the 'best' was often dictated by which system it started on, and how much time and experience the porting team had to get things done. Over and over we see games on both systems that have no equivalent on the other pull off tricks that these crossplatorm games wouldn't even dream of attempting, let alone actually using. And then there's just timing. A game released in 1995 is going to look better than one released in 1990 regardless of the system, because in 1990 you had to really think carefully about whether you could justify using a 1 megabyte ROM instead of a 512 kilobyte one, yet in 1995 you could easily justify using a 3 or 4 megabyte ROM, and it only started to become a bit dubious if you needed 6 megabytes or more. Regardless of the system, it's easy to underestimate just how much of a difference having 4 megabytes instead of 1 is to the games of this era... But if you actually feel like starting an argument I suspect the biggest advantage of the mega drive is not power, but simple understanding. Lots of programmers new how to write good 68000 code. You could even get reasonable results using a C compiler. (not a given on those relatively weak 80's and early 90's systems). The 65C816 however, was understood by only a few, and while it was related to the fairly common 6502 (used in the Apple II,commodore 64, Atari 2600 and NES amongst others), it had a lot of quirks that had nothing to do with the 6502 that people might understand from past systems. Using a C compiler was out of the question too if you wrote 65C816 code. Compilers barely existed, and the results if you did use one were so terrible you couldn't really risk the penalty to performance. Plus, the use of packed pixel graphics in the mega drive vs bitplane graphics in the snes made doing complex graphics work on the CPU in an snes even more difficult than it already was. Was the Mega Drive really more powerful? I have no idea, but it was definitely easier for most to understand. and if you understand something, you're more likely to write semi-decent code. And on a system where the CPU speed is measured in individual megahertz, writing good code is the single biggest factor in what you can get hardware to do. Did the Snes really NEED the SuperFX to be able to do 3d graphics? Possibly not. But it needed it to do them reliably enough for most commercial game programmers to be able to implement any 3d effects in any kind of reasonable time. Still, there's no way to settle this conclusively from looking at commercially produced games. Only a handful ever try for anything beyond mediocre in a technical sense. The game we are looking at here is a great example. Reasonably competent, but unremarkable, and the snes version was probably a fairly lazy, fast port of the Mega Drive version, because that's typically ''good enough' even if you could technically do better with more effort put in.

Yeah, if you look at a game like Rendering Ranger R2 on the SNES then you can get a much better idea of what it was technically capable of when a really skilled and dedicated programmer got to work on it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ip2adWVrfpusesU kzbin.info/www/bejne/ip2adWVrfpusesU And it's doing all that on a stock SNES with no slowdown at all.
