@@lesstevens2370 Actually they should partner up with Enphase! Microinverters would be extremely beneficial in this situation as each panel has its own inverter and acts separately from other panels that may be in shade or facing the opposite direction of the sun. Enphase battery tech is on par if not superior to Tesla at this point.

@@Unstoppabletravel Hi - this is Michael from Silent Yachts - we received a feedback from one of our owners who does charter with his Silent 60. He had a demanding and experienced client on board, who already tested a Sunreef Eco before for 4 (four!!!) weeks and will go on another Sunreef Eco for another 2 weeks to find out the difference. Here are the numbers. 14 days charter, 240 miles, about 1.000 kWh generated by the sun (1 week they had cloudy weather, normally they would have produced about 1.400 kWh = 100 per day). Aircon on every day - day and night. Every day cooking on board, 3 meals, electric tender charged on board, watertoys. They had 7 generator hours in 14 days = half an hour per day (generator produces about 100 kWh per hour. Average speed while cruising 8 to 8,5 knots (consumption would have been less than half at 6 knots - no generator would have been required at 6 knots!). These are the true numbers recorded in August 2023 on a Silent 60, which we produced in 2021. The gen only had been started every second day during cruising for one hour, never in a bay and of course never during the night. Same distance covered at a lower speed of 6 knots would not have required using the gen at all. Right after this trip the client has booked on a Sunreef 80 Eco. His short summary - "the Sunreef is a nice boat, but I did not have even one "silent" night - the generator had to run every night, it kicked in at 3 or 4 in the moring and had to be started during the day for a couple of hours as well during cruising. Guess which boat he decided to buy? Best regards, Michael

I watched the video and looked at the specs for the Silent 80 3 deck closed with 2 X 340 kW E-Motors, 429 kWh Lithium Battery and 2 X 145 kW Generators. Based on the information provided, I would expect the solar panels to generate a maximum of 125 kWh on a good day. That that is sufficient power for 1 hour of motoring at 20% of max power assuming using no other power onboard. Motoring at 20% power the fully charged batteries will give approximately 2.5 hours before the batteries reach 80% discharge. Charging from solar only will require 2.5 - 3 days to fully charge the batteries, assuming no other power is used during that time. The Generators running at 80% capacity will 108 kW each, assuming 10%, assuming 10% loss in charging and recovery from the battery, that gives 97kW to each drive. That would mean running at 28% of max power assuming no other power is being consumed on the boat. While this is a boat may be suitable for an eco warrior who is prepared to forego speed, range, aircon and other conveniences in order to minimise carbon footprint, don't hold your breath waiting for an ocean crossing.

Are the battery banks easily accessible/upgradable? With the coming of graphene based batteries, within the next few years, offering substantially reduced weight and volume as well as 5x the energy storage density compared to Li-Ion, what are the retrofit options for the battery banks? Moving from the 210kwH to 1000+ kwH of storage, would truly give the Silent-Yachts excellent range/longevity on station. Love the layout and design. Cheers!

@SILENET-YACHTS : putting this here as it's about energy consumption. Though I think the info was in another video. Mentioned was that at 6kn it's 20KW and at 8kn it's 40KW and that it raises pretty steep until it flattens out thanks to approaching and reaching planing speed. Have you ever experimented, either theoretically in computer simulations, or practically, with foils. They do add some resistance at slower speed, but create lift and thus let ship lift up and reach planing at lower speeds. Depending on how low a speed planing could be reached it could be worthwhile. Say it uses 25% more at 4kn and less , a wash at 6kn, but then brings down the 8kn energy consumption and above by 25%...

I like the idea. But it also means more mechanicals that can break down and increase maintenance costs. There's also the extra weight which would lower efficiency, I assume. And probably would take up living space, too.

It's a great step forward for human kind to have solar driven yachts! I think catamerans are on the next step of evolution with independent food production, like Hydroponic or small Aquaponic food growing systems with round ecodomes on top with solar cells on top and sides to have tomatoes, potatoes, salads and whirlpool size Aquaponic tank ! Atmospheric water generators are maybe less energy consuming. I also think that ships are an exellent solution to survive on the Seas of a post Nuclear War on land and some water areas, because the vastness of the Oceans would diffuse it faster then on mainland. Ships would need EMP safe electrical system and some rooms emp isolated. Air & water filtration from radioactive isotopes Geigermeters Independent energy, water and food peoduction and space for bigger stock!

I truly think that this will be the future of yachting, especially for liveaboards. Imagine removing the ICE generator and fuel tanks to allow more space for battery storage. Combining the kite sailing ability should allow for a) more efficient travel, b) allow regenerative charging and c) offer storm kites. Another idea is to perhaps allow reverse flow charging from electric toys to battery banks (VTG), even if this allowed 5 days of essential equipment usage in the middle of the ocean, it's bought time till the sun comes out. Very curious how this yacht would handle during a storm and no electricity due to a few days of stormy clouds.

Hi! Thanks for your questions! Vertical wind generators throw shade on the panels, therefore actually decreasing the overall energy production of the yacht. In addition, they are quite noisy, and depending on the position, can be a safety hazard as well. Regarding the future, all the key components of our yachts such as the solar panels and batteries can be easily exchanged. Therefore, a SILENT can be upgraded over time and benefit from the latest technology.

Hello, i have some question......as you set speed to 12 knots and start the generator......What comsumption has the generator (l/hour)....i guess it runs constantly on 3/4 of a load? I presummed, you started a 150 kW generator? Best regards and all the best in 2021!

Hi Rob, thanks for your kind words - we are working on a H2 solution - but at the moment the pretty bad overall efficiency of about 40-50% of the H2 energy chain (electric power - electrolysis - H2 - compressor - H2-tank - fuel-cell - electric power) keeps us from going this way at the moment ....batteries are still the best solution - and I´m pretty sure that this won´t change

Is the Airco of the type that can work directly from solar, so DC power? Could save a lot of energy. Would be great when (some rows of) the front panel could slide forward and down, revealing some more panels to create a larger charging surface when at anker, with the ship turned into the sun. It would also make the ship more aero dynamic when sailing into the wind. Off course there is a problem with visibility at that moment, but one can steer the ship from the flybridge or when out at sea on camera images when inside. The interior of this boat is very nice, also because of less levels in the floor and windows.

Hi! Thanks for the kind words! It all depends on the weather conditions and the energy consumption. As a general rule of thumb, when cruising at 6 knots during sunny conditions, there is an equal amount of consumption to production. For the SILENT 55 & 60 this means less than 20 kW.

Problem is, realistically if you are making a passage , you have to run the generator every day. And 4 knots is very slow, but going faster requires exponentially more energy. So this boat only makes sense for island hopping in the Caribbean etc. Thats fine. There’s just a lit if dreamers who think you can cross an ocean on solar power alone.
@RogerWilco1
@RogerWilco1 3 жыл бұрын
Marvi Wilson Prove it. What is consumption at 4kns in kwh? What is solar total production over one day in khwp? What is battery capacity? Cause you cannot do it on their 50 foot model.
@linush.3598
@linush.3598 3 жыл бұрын
@@RogerWilco1 Well, this boat is only going to be 100% electric when it is island hopping or traveling along a coast, anchoring. You are right saying that long ocean passages will need the help of the generator. Using the generator though, the yacht is easily capable of crossing the Atlantic (as done with the silent 64) and possibly even the pacific? Based on my calculations, the boat should have a range of approx. 3000nm on diesel alone. With some good weather, this should extend to at least 3500nm.
@RogerWilco1
@RogerWilco1 3 жыл бұрын
Linus H. The 64 didn’t cross just on its generator but with a bunch of extra fuel aboard. Again I want to know the numbers, because when I asked deteiled questions of their sakes contact, by my calculations the range was way too short, but I was estimating faster than 4 knots. 4 knots is very, very slow. So slow that you will be pushed backwards by a stuff breeze, or 4 knots of current. If you are in the tradewinds then mostly the wind helps you, but that works against you going the other way. My only objection is that they dont make these limitations clear.

@RogerWilco1 3 жыл бұрын
John Lions Kite Sail seems like a great idea. I asked them about it and thet are using some companies product, but that company gas posted no evidence it is a real product that I could see. They just had a demo of people manually flying a kite attached to a much smaller boat. It’s a huge effort to bring a product like that to market and a lot bigger kite to move an 80 foot boat than a 23 foot boat. And the silent isn’t a light boat, even for 80 feet.

Is there a better spreadsheet of this? What are the solar panels bringing in on perfect conditions to what is being consumed to what is being banked? this video is dreaming numbers up and consumption and generation have zero bearings! what is the bank capacity, what is the max kWp from solar panels, and what is the kWh consumption? for example, you have AC running well that would be huge kWh, and in no way would your solar be bringing in a positive charge to the bank and run ac on the whole boat. hope to hear back.
@silentyachts
@silentyachts 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Justin! The peak power production depends on the models. The SILENT 80 displayed in the video produces 26 kWp, enough to power the AC on board and the propulsion system. Battery capacity on this model is up to 429 kWh. Feel free to check out our website for more specifications on the model (www.silent-yachts.com/silent80). I think to advertise to the dreamers you should be more daring with the objectives. Bay to bay for dinner is nice but I’d like to at least visualize myself testing the CE rating of “A” out in the wider ocean, passing sailers in dead wind etc. A large living room trolling slowly around in the bay is obnoxious in my opinion, at least for the “let’s visualize how you’d use this.”

If you could equip the yaht with hydrogen electrolisys system and a fuel cell instead of a diesel generator and the diesel fuel tanks, then you could save much space and weight and get the maximum from the sun, as during cruising you could use kyte and generate hydrogen at once, then during the night you could go faster using reserves of hydrogen or as alternative fuel source. PV can be twice efficient using other spectrums of the light and if watercooling the pannels, their efficiency won't be affected so much by the temperture, that also would reduce heating of the inner living spaces and save electricity for airconditioning, while collected heat could be used for hot water for showers and kitchen and washing machine, which could get a hot water instead of boiling it by electricity, same is for dishwasher. Condensed water coming from the air conditioning could be used for washing machine and dishwasher or for flashing toilets. Kyte can have wind turbine installed within and transfer electricity generated by the wind, which can be combined all together with its pulling power received from the wind. What I really can't get is why use toilet paper at all on a yaht for 5M€, when there is a bidet seat available for more than a few decades, preheated water and a fan instead of the paper?

A quick Google search suggests typical solar panel efficiency is about 150W/m2. To achieve the shown surplus of +10kW, you will need at least 66m2 of solar panel surface. Eyeballing the dimensions of the solar panels shown on the boat seems to fit at least that much. Also from the shown power usage, it seems the propulsion engines are quite diminutive at 12kW each. But they will probably do the job perfectly well for quiet, silent cruising in relatively unchallenging waters.

@silentyachts
@silentyachts 3 жыл бұрын
Hi James! Thanks for your question. There are 8 years of warranty on the battery banks. Within those 8 years at least, there will be no reason for exchanging the battery banks. In case you would like to take advantage of the latest battery technology being released in the future however, you have the possibility to replace them the of course. From a technical / reliability point of view however, the batteries will last you for many years to come. In terms of storm there is no reason to be worried for the solar panels. We have experienced light to medium levels of hail with no damage on the panels. Rest assured though that we provide 25 years of warranty on the panels.
