This panel can put out close to 100 watts kzbin.infoUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle.The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts.If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

That is very cool. I know these boats have circumnavigated the globe. I wonder if there would still be plenty of good solar energy way up north.. Over the next few years there will be gains in solar panel efficiency and that should give them even more reserve. It is such a great concept; no noise, no fumes, no pollution. It's great to see you guys living the life.

Lots of solar energy in the summer time in the north 😁... Winter not so much LOL.... Here in Toronto they say we average 5hours a day of sunlight across the whole year. So clearly a very seasonal thing.

I thought you were going to mention some more technical stuff about the yatch. Do solar power is enough to keep all the boat services and amenities running? Do you use backup generators at times? When you are sailing is the sun energy harvesting enough?
@marc0523

As a rule, moving something (a car, boat) uses multiple factors more energy than hotel services (heating, cooking AC etc.) do. If the boat can use electric to move, then it can run everything else off solar without issues. The actual figures would be nice though.

Its an even better system as it can regen under sail in bad weather or at night...use solar in the day esp at anchor ... Though silent yatchs envisioned using an automated kite sail to augment the motors either increasing speed or saving energy and extending ranges.

Hull cleaning and servicing the generator otherwise you have drip seals on the shafts. Desalination equipment but the electric motors should run for years without servicing. The bearings are the only wear part and the shaft drive joint and cutlass bearing.

so do you personally recommend buying one? or do you think electric is still not as good for living-aboard/cruising the world?
@redwolfexr
@redwolfexr Жыл бұрын
Depends on how you are using it. Its designed for short jumps, not long range cruising. If you want to bounce between the Med and the Caribbean or even between the Spain and the UK regularly -- then no, its not the boat you want. It only has unlimited range at very low speed. It can do 20-30 miles a day no problem at faster speeds. The fact you said "cruising the world" probably means its not for you. This is the boat old folks buy to live from island to island. Great amenities, floating apartment that doesn't need shore power. If you want to do long range/moderate speed then you need to burn a lot of fuel. Its a coastal boat.
@sweetagony666
@sweetagony666 Жыл бұрын
@@redwolfexr thank you so much for your answer! highly appreciate it. but see, i do want that floating apartment with no need for shore powers. like i really want something 100% liveaboard! thing is silent yachts have said this is like an blue water cat! and they did like an atlantic passage.. and even tho i've never done a passage, in theory i don't really mind taking long time crossing.. hence why im totally fine with just living on the boat~ the thing is 64 is way too big, and i wish if there is more option for customization. however, your comment made me lean more hybrid/electric system! thanks again
@redwolfexr
@redwolfexr Жыл бұрын
@@sweetagony666 You can do a passage, but carry a lot of fuel for the generator and don't try it on only electrics. Its just a lot of folks don't realize you can only do 100 miles a day or so if you are only running solar and batteries. Probably run 4-5 knots forever as long as you have decent sun. Running battery at night and going slow enough to leave enough overhead to recharge by the end of the day. This essentially IS a hybrid electric - one question I have wondered is how long does it take to replenish a fully depleted battery. I suspect that the sweet spot is running it down to 20 and charging back to 80, given the charging cycle of Lithium.
@sweetagony666
@sweetagony666 Жыл бұрын
@@redwolfexr yeah its true, that's why i said i'd like customization option on the silent yacht! because they are build for cursing, so they hold so much weight! also i do feel wind generator is necessary!! having a bad cloudy day. so i feel like the voyage would be faster in a smaller lighter yacht. lol but yeah fuel seems still essinal making hybrid electric the best choice for the times! and most people i watch sailing on youtube on a sailing (when they have wind) or doing motoring, hit like max of 7 knots of speed, and they seem to be doing lots of crossings. :) you seem like you know a lot about boating, which i really admire. are you a sailor btw :D ?
@redwolfexr
@redwolfexr Жыл бұрын
@@sweetagony666 Nope, just watched a lot of videos and I am an engineer. I really know more about solar than boats. I just liked the idea of Silent and have read up a lot on them and other similar products. You need a fuel bladder to do crossings on a Silent because they had to give up a lot of mass/space for batteries. It has a small tank because you are meant to use Generator for backup. You can think of a "gallon of diesel" as "x hours of sun" in a way.

What is the life expectancy of the batteries
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 Жыл бұрын
They are guaranteed for something like 5 years though their working life should be closer to ten. Within 5 years new battery capacities are likely to have improved by a factor of 4 ...and be even more flexible and stable with a lower price...if they get away from Lithium ...which is the next step on the way from BYD and CATL. With Sodium based battery technology's. Aluminium Or Sulpher.. They will also be cheaper, lighter and have more usable capacity without incurring damage compared to Li Fe Poly.

I agree with them in theory ... If yo I can't help but to wonder how cool you will think your silent yacht is when you in your family are out in the middle of an ocean crossing when a major storm hits with 20 to 30 plus foot waves hey you find out that you're two electric motors in your solar entity is no match for the storm and you can't keep that bolt pointed into the wave and thereby putting your life and that of your family in jeopardy! It is not unimaginable thanking parcel storm hits you at the most inopportune time when there is no sun for days your batteries are drained and you are about out of diesel for your generator and therefore leave you dead in the water. So many different scenarios where a solar only powered vessel with electric motors and no other backup can leave you in peril. I am not opposed to solar power yachts I think they are great I just like options especially with my life and that of my family are in question my perfect catamaran yeah would it be full solar with the two electric motors as well as twin diesels add I ought to like my saIles which would give me triple redundancy that way you can use your solar in your wind power where the majority of the time but if you get into an emergency situation you have the option of full diesel power
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665

The original first Atlantic crossing was made in the face of waves that size. A lot of sailing vessels cross the oceans with less speed and a lot less power than produced by even one electric of these electric motors. They also offer 230hp equivalent units. The electric motor is not the limit.. if you take a look at a tesla or Ford Crate motor you are dealing with a kitchen bin sized object that has more hp and torque than a small block V 8 at a fraction of the wt. The big weakness of the diesel engine these days is the fuel ..much of it is contaminated with Diesel bug water and sediments. Its also heavy expensive and running out... So if you need to run one better to use it to power a generator at a constant optimum speed for a couple of hours and you can switch off once its charged the battery back up cycling between the batteries upper and lower charging limits. And dont forget you can use a kite sail to augment the other systems. The pioneering crossing.. 5,500miles in Feb with very large waves and high winds. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3u4n42ijqmCiqc and it used under 280 gallons running all house and marine systems with a full crew living normally and cooking. This is a very early 64' version like this, so all the systems will have improved measurably since. Development of fluid piston heavy fuel rotary engines to power the generator would reduce the size noise and vibration and wt. To the size of a small yatch/ portable gen set.

Don't ever buy a sailboat bro, you will be too petrified to ever leave the bay. Sailing cats... don't have big motors. That said, this isn't the boat I would buy if I was regularly crossing the Atlantic Ocean. But would happily live in where its designed to flourish.. the Mediterranean Sun.
