The bomb slowly dropping into the chimney... that scared me out of my wits. Yet tied with the bird slowly slipping into the water, all to save its egg - that's some powerful symbolism.

i always wonder with these types of stories as to how realistic is the world they're set because that changes the symbolism quite a lot in this case: the ending can either be taken as very positive or horribly bleak. on th positive side, you could see it as the parent bird sacrificing itself to preserve the future generation but... if you take a more "realistic" view of bird biology, the ending becomes tragically futile sice the egg cannot survive without a parent. the baby will either freeze to death inside the egg or starve to death after hatching, so despite the paren't bird's efforts, the ultimate destruction cannot be stopped

Everyone has the potential to be a monster. During WWII the majority of Ukrainians were pro Hitler/pro Nazi (partly because they were anti-Russia) and some of the most brutal concentration camp guards were Ukrainian. Also don't forget the Babi Yar massacre. Maybe karma is at work.
