Marco, if you haven’t already - do yourself a favor and watch the OG ending. While remake’s VA for Mary was good, Mary’s original VA is in a league of her own. Her final letter reading is maybe the best vocal performance I’ve heard in a game. She actually cried while delivering the lines. Apparently she’d lost a loved one recently and connected with the story. Check it out if you haven’t. I also recommend hearing her monologue right before the last fight where James is running in the long hallway.

Silent Hill 2 is a game that's covered in horror paint, but rooted in reality. Each character suffers through the reality they've lived through already. You have Eddie who gives into his anger and hatred of being bullied, you have Angela who accepted the inevitable hell that she's lived for most of her life, and you have James who must face his crime, to the point where the man is literally stalked by the personification of his guilt, judge, and executioner. The monsters, environments, and sound design are horrific and terrifying, but the story absolutely carried this game to become a masterclass of horror on its own.

I used to never be able to consume any horror media at all until I watched a movie back in high school (A Tale of Two Sisters, for those who are curious) and it made me realize the beauty that comes with a good horror story. When I realized the genre was about being human with all its beauty and ugliness, it became one of my favorite genres ever. Silent Hill 2 is one of the best examples of this. Once you go through the entire journey, you sit with the sadness and joy of being human. Truly a masterpiece.

The og and remake are works of art. I want to shout out the combat of the remake for adding another layer of depth at least for me to the storytelling. Fighting monsters is torture, you can hear in James grunts that he is suffering, fighting for he's life literally and figuratively, he's head is barely above water. Once again for me at least, representing the brutality of facing one's trauma, guilt, grief etc...

for me silent hill is more then just a horror game, its a beautiful piece of art That made me come to terms with a relationship. my dad introduced it to me and insisted that i went in completely blind, i was still with my girl friend of about 3 months at the time of first playing it. at first i saw the game as clunky and weird and i found the game to be interesting enough but i became irritated a lot with it, eventually i just kind of hit a wall with it and gave up. but something brought me back to it, i found myself in love with the ideas and the isolation, the little ways that the narrative plays into the human psych. i wanted more, i finished the game after pulling an all-nighter with it, and i remember just sobbing from the ending. no spoilers but all of the themes of love and moving on really hit me hard. i love the twin peaks ass feel and the dreamy ness of it all. all of the characters are so brilliant. but the game began to take on a new context as time went on. not to get to personal but recently i was dealing with a break up and found myself being increasingly destroyed by things, i couldn't wrap my head around the fact that i lost this person, and some of the break up was my fault, i went back to silent hill. after playing this game for the 3rd time everything took on a whole new meaning, its still horrifying, but now i connected it to my own life, and i learned to realize i have to move on, past the death of this relationship and be happy. and know that even though both sides made mistakes, and we can both apologize as much as possible, the death of the relationship is hard, but something that we have to move past. and I've been a bit happier coming to terms with my guilt, i killed my pyramid head. and yeah, silent hill 2, basically saved my life. Silent hill 2 is beautiful. On a lighter note the music is the greatest soundtrack in Existence, Boner jams out the Wazu, and some of the tracks still make me tear up when i hear them in context. THE REVERSE WILL IS AMAZING AND IT NEEDS MORE APPRECIATION!!!!

It's pretty interesting how you managed to tie "Theme of Laura" with...well, Laura. Because I recently watched a video about Yamaoka's work on Silent Hill and beyond and learnt the following FUN FACT: "Theme of Laura", despite its name, never had anything to do with it. It is nothing more than the opening/main theme of Silent Hill 2. Yamaoka was asked, again and again, why so. He said: *_"The reason for that is because the first cutscene to be finished back then was Laura's. To be honest, it got that title because Laura was the first character I saw, not so much because I set out to write a theme song for her."_*

Soundtracks, environments and characters are legendary. Remake is well made, not perfect - Maria's VA in the original is so much better. Soundtrack changed a lot too, not sure do I enjoy this much combat in the SH game all in all though, I am happy it exist. And about the first movie, I still believe it was good, sure director put Pyramid head there but he did it due to love for the series, and sure, movie was not perfect although still made with heart and the ending was amazing.

Great review Marco! Any minor critiques I've had of the remake aside, I'm glad a new generation and those who missed it the first time around have gotten to learn the magic the franchise once had in those first few games. Also to discover the reason why it's had such a frustrated cult following for all these years 🤣 I first played the original on PS2 when I was a little kid (my first horror game) and while I didn't fully understand the themes at the time, by the time I forced myself through it I knew I had played something special. The interesting perspective from that has been coming back to it now and then throughout my life (the PS2 original, several years later PC, PC modded version version a couple years ago, and now finally the remake) with a more mature and experienced understanding of the themes of the game on a personal level. It's like a new experience each time narratively beyond the shiny new coats of paint. While SH2 is a nice self-contained story the other games can be rather daunting to understand as you learn the ins and outs of the story. I really love SH3 in particular from the other games. Hopefully we get good remakes of the other Team Silent games. Also, if you've found some love for the psychological horror genre I recommend checking out SOMA. While not exactly relatable it's a master class in the genre in my opinion that deals with uncomfortable difficult concepts that will leave you thinking about it for a long while after you finish.

Spoliers I first played the original Silent Hill 2 last year at the age of 19, finished it at like 4am and got the Leave ending. I cried like a bitch at the letter Mary reads, later found out that the VA for Mary also cried because it was her first reaction to the letter and she was reacting in real time. Silent Hill 2 changed my life, I had to take a break from the series though as I wanted to go into Silent Hill 1-3 since they are connected, but I seriously wanted to let Silent Hill 2 sit with me, soak up all the knowledge, dev facts, behind the scenes and true meanings of certain things. I think it's time to return to the series and finally finish Silent Hill 1-3 and at some point Silent Hill 4: The Room. I always appreciate videos like this, they mean a lot to me because the game means a lot to me. I've played some of the remake and I've enjoyed it, I still prefer the original though and honestly that's fine. I don't think Bloober Team tried to beat the original because I don't think it's possible. They did a great job at transferring it to a modern audience though and I appreciate their great effort and passion for the original game.

As a recommendation; SOMA is probably second place after Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4 in terms of a horror story that touches on very human themes, though it is also a great science-fiction tale. I think the OG is worth watching as well. There are very unique aspects to its narrative presentation that highlight themes and motifs different to the remake. Its oddities in presentation are all very intentional in communicating different ideas, just as David Lynch did before it. It's less accessible but to me, more effective in many ways. I think every aspect of both the remake and the original in terms of gameplay, music, presentation and art direction, all communicate strong things about the narrative. Every part of it feels like it contributes to telling this story and communicating the themes. Every part that seems obvious is likely not and represents something deeper. To me, this analysis is great as someone who is new to the intricate story that is Silent Hill 2, but there's even more underneath the surface waiting for you over the coming years. I love Silent Hill 2. Though I must say, people should look at 3 the same way. That game offers just as much depth in its meaning. Silent Hill 1, 2, 3 and 4 are some of the greatest horror tales ever told, some of the greatest pieces of storytelling in history.

Hi Marco, this will get a little too personal and it may contain spoilers for people who haven't play it yet. I was a little undecided of doing this comment, until you said that "playing this game would've help you with your father's passing". I played Silent hill 2 when it came out and it has been one of my favorite games since then. I thought i understood James actions back then but now i know i was wrong. Two years ago my mother got diagnosed pancreatic cancer and while we were taking care of her, they found a tumor on my fathers colon. In march of this year, my mother passed away. I was the one who stayed with her all the nights and also was the one who saw her last breath in her hospital bed, it was 12 hours of taking instant decisions one after the other, like changing her position, calling different nurses, etc. Since than i can't stop feeling regret of those decisions... "What if i chose the wrong one? Would've been different? Could she stay alive longer if i wouldn't did it? Would she been happier? Would i been happier?". I know that James made a super extreme decision in compare of mines, but even those small things hunts me sometimes. I think the remake of this game couldn't came in a better moment of my life, it was what i needed to overcome all that happened in these 2 years. As for my father, they remove the tumor he had but still needs some treatments to make sure he can continue a "normal" life. I'm don't think my story will show you what would've happened if you played back then cause everybody acts different but i'm glad to leave this here as another side of the coin.

It's funny you say that, because I'm exactly the same. I don't like horror games or more in particular psycho horror games at all. I enjoy watching youtubers play them, but barely ever do I play them myself. I have just such an imaganative mind, that before Im able to enter one room in such games, im already scared to death without even something happened. LOL. However, Silent Hill 2 always fascinated me, it had a weird pull on me, because I just thought it just looked so cool, from the scenes and picutres I saw over the years. And then the hype the OG title had, and also the story element, which I knew was big in this part. So I gave it a shot and yes, this was really a JOB for me, actual WORK, to finish it. Because it stressed me, exhausted me in real life. But I have to say, just like you, it was worth every amount of stress I endured, every moment of oppressive fear and my conclusoin is, that this is the absolute best game I have played in a long time. There is long gap between this game and what comes next on my list of favorite games in my adult age. I like to seperate my "favorite games" between things I grew up with and things I played today as an adult. Because I do think, no matter how good certain games are when youre older, they cna never fully beat those games of you being a kid, enjoying video games for the first time. So the comparison is always weird and it sucks that you always have to say: yea but acutally Zelda Ocarina of Time is better than Silent Hill 2 Remake...LMAO. So to avoid all that, I just seperated this list for some time now and when it comes to my current day n age favorite games list...I think I actually have to say that Silent Hill 2 remake ist he best game I have played so far. It has such a depth, such an insane level design and progression and on top of it, the emotions are just so authentic and real, also caused by great modelling of the caracters...this game is on a different level. And I say that as someone who like I said, basically never plays horror games. I think I didnt even play one at all the last 10 years. I am in love with this game and I still cant get over it.

Oh how I love when ppl play SH2 and just get so into it (just being “Why is PH in the film?” Only a week and a half after the remake came out just shows how much ppl deep dive into it ) Not finished the remake yet (halfway through prison) but the original is one of my fave games and I got emotional from just listening to Marco talk about how it connected with him Spoilers: I’m glad you’re even-handed on James. Always felt he did it for both selfish and selfless reasons. Too many ppl get black and white with it and damn the character

As an old time Silent Hill fan who's been into the series for, like, 20 years now, it is SO refreshing for people to finally get to see Silent Hill in its full glory again. It's been so, so long, and with the death of Silent Hills I had resigned myself to the series never reaching peaks like this again. I'm so glad that a whole new generation of people finally get to experience what made this series such a massive, influential pillar of horror gaming in the first place.

As a Silent Hill and From Software fan, i HIGHLY reccomend you Fear and Hunger, it's an incredibly hard game, in the difficulty itself and being an rpg maker game, but it is mainyl inspired in those 2, Dark Souls and Silent Hill, it's a masterpiece in terms of story and soundtrack, definetly reccomend it!

I say this every time but I look forward to a potential Alan Wake 2 playthrough. It's only similar to SH2 in that it's psychological horror but my god is is good. It's very dark, but not quite as dark as SH2.

Silent Hill 2 was praised for decades for a reason. I'm glad the story still works for new players like you, I was afraid something would be lost in the remake.

It hit you the way the original hit us fans in 2001. That is quite an accomplishment by the developers.

You should listen to the original SH2 soundtrack. I mean it. Betrayal sounds so, so much better. As well as some other songs. Like True, etc. Wounded Warsong from SH4 is also a great track.

Who else was bummed that Pianissimo Epilogue didn't play on the results screen? Lol I hope you listen to that one! Its like in my top 5 tracks out of all Silent Hill games. I'm glad you played and enjoyed it! 👍

i recommend everyone who loved the remake play the original! its really easy to get it, and as its abandonware now, its free on PC lol. while i like and appreciate the remake, i think its important to play the original if the story moved you!

As someone who's played this, and of course the original multiple times. I feel as though the true ending of this game, happens to be the bad ending. (i'm not sure if you've seen it yet), but Laura I think is the innocent manifestation of Mary, Just as Maria is James sexual desired version of Mary. Laura remains in the town, Innocent and free. A ghost of a person, James simply accepts his hell, and vanishes looking for the old gods. But the Good ending makes me feel better lmao

That's why is so famous as the biggest and the best horror game of all time. I normally absolutely hate saying a game is the best of all time, but Silent Hill 2 is different, there is nothing like this out there. Extremely good and unique

I firmly believe that the heavy presence of piano is due to Mary's hobby of practicing the piano. It's an instrument that heavily resonates with James and the sound is probably comforting to him at the same time that it's painful/anxiety-inducing because of (redacted). Magdalene is probably the best example of this, I think.
@kingjamos24227 күн бұрын
I thought the same. It only makes sense for a game that is actively trying to torment the protagonist to play the instrument that is closely linked to his wife.

@@MarcoMeatball Mary's enjoyment of the piano? Yes, I believe if you wander down Nathan Road instead of going directly to Jack's Inn, he'll talk to Maria about it. If not specifically that section, it's during one of those sections where you wander with Maria. If you take your time they have dialogue.
@Michael-im1tr3 күн бұрын
@@Shikujiru Indeed, going in Nathan Road, they talk about it. In the original, we get exposed to Mary's liking of the piano by James' comment on the piano in the Lakeview Hotel.
