He was on point with GT 2. Aside from FF7, Metal Gear, Crash, and Spyro, the only other game that comes to mind when I think of PS1 is GT 1 and 2. Grand Turismo 1 and 2 defined the potential of the racing genre. And it STILL DOES to this day. You won’t find a racing game that is both a simulator and fun to control like Grand Turismo.

That was a core part of gaming back in the 90s. Especially if you were a kid and couldn't exactly buy games at will (unless your parents were cool like that) sometimes that was all you had. Couldn't just hop on PSN or gamepass and download a game to play.

I really like Twisted Metal and I think it should have been on that board, but I'm also going to eliminate it myself, by presenting an argument kinda in the way they did: where is Twisted Metal now? What is its legacy? People have wanted Tony Hawk to return, and Spyro, and Crash, Driver 2 was like an early GTA, Medal of Honor was like an early Call of Duty, but Twisted Metal sadly did not have the lasting impact that many of these other games did.

Vigilante 8 had miles better physics, more detailed damage to the vehicles, more varied and deep combat thanks to each weapon having multiple functions, more impactful "levelution", roaming, persistent giant enemies, higher fidelity graphics. Twisted metal was more "Hollywood" in its presentation which made it more marketable but vigilante 8 was the superior game and it's sequel was even bigger and better

N64 keeping to carts (among other things Nintendo did) was Nintendo, in hindsight, shooting itself in the foot. It had a smaller libarary than even the Sega Saturn, and it was the start of Nintendo having *relatively lacking* third party support for many years, and due to that Nintendo (and Rare) basically carried that system for the most part. SNES to N64 couldn't hope to compare to PSX to PS2.

Regardless of which game is “better”, MGS is the most important game. It laid the foundation for literally every single player narrative game that followed on every console generation. Competent voice acting paired with a cinematic delivery was virtually unheard of before that game. All of the best single player experiences we got in the last few generations owe everything to MGS setting the benchmark and showing devs how to do it right.

Lol what a goofy cope. SOTN has always been considered a top ten PS1 game, heavily boosted CV's popularity to this day, helped co-spawn the Metroidvania genre, and every sidescroller made today wants to be compared to Symphony or Super Metroid. GT2 was always a stepping stone towards GT3 on PS2.

I fully agree with Kenny on Tomb Raider 2. It was genre-defining. It was loads better than the original, it had a great atmospheric feel, Lara was & still is cool as f*ck & it helped veer the PlayStation to a more teen/young adult audience, rather than the kid-targeted Nintendo & Sega. Totally agree with this list, but the sentiment towards Crash 1, Spyro, and especially Ape Escape hurt my soul. Ape Escape had one of the greatest osts with its legacy for that alone still being felt today.

Arguing against Gran Turismo 2 as a top 5 (or even top 3) game of the PS1 is mind boggling to me. Racing sims or semi-sims were just not a thing back then and while GT1 was the building block and sort of the pioneer and also groundbreaking, GT2 was so much more and incredibly monumental. It established a game were car culture was a thing, pushed the hardware to its absolute limits, was graphically impressive, progression system was A+ with the licensing system, handling and physics felt nice, detailed customization, defined a genre. Saying: "it's not fun when it's a driving game" is not understanding the impact it had. PS: I would also argue Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 is a top 5 game in the system as well. Replayability off the charts, incredibly expressive and smooth to play even today. Soundtrack was fire and was just a kickass videogame.

Something I've always hated about hardcore gamers (and I am a huge gamer myself) is that they think they're TOO GOOD for certain genres. How normies shit on JRPGs or fighting games all the time, they do the same to things like sports games and more serious racers like Gran Turismo. "It's not fun!" is horseshit. I don't find JRPGs fun but if I said "FF7 shouldn't be here because it's not fun" I would get murdered.

Gran Turismo 2 is easily top 10 and I'd argue top 5. But Tony Hawk very much is not.

Yeah I'm with you on both. GT2 *is* fun and trying to attack whether its "too realistic" and "boring" because of it, of which neither is true, is just not understanding the genre at all. It's literally the same argument people use to say "you just mash in fighting games." You don't just mash, that's a fundamental misunderstanding from the start. If you don't understand that part then you wont understand what makes the game fun for years in the future. You wouldn't call Tekken 3 the same game as SC2 in the same way you wouldn't say GT2 is like any other racing game. The race tracks are iconic, the music is iconic, the progression is iconic, the presentation is iconic, the gameplay is iconic. GT1 defined what a racing game could be and GT2 perfected that to the capability of the technology at the time. To this day franchises are still trying to recapture the magic of the early GT games, including GT itself.

Agreed. Simmons & Steve saying it is not fun or boring is crazy talk. It didn't become one of the highest selling game on the PS1 for nothing. People love to drive cars, and GT gave people the opportunity to experience cars they would never ever dream of driving. What Simmons & Steve fail to realize is GT was one of the first sims to have accurate car handling and extensive customization. It was a car lovers wet dream. Arguably GT3 is the definitive game of the series but GT2 I would say is #2 and legit top 10, heck maybe top 5 PS1 games of all time.

Some people hate the way Tomb Raider controls and hate the combat but i don't know... it's a unique thing and that's cool, every Mario game controls like Mario 64 which is a testiment to just how insanely well they nailed it first try but nothing else plays like Tomb Raider, and while that's not everyone's cup of tea it did have millions of fans, it's certainly a Marmite thing now but back then it was new and fresh. I remember being in school and at the school gates all the mums were talking about how their husbands were all playing Tomb Raider.

My only issue is the control. Unlike RE, the fixed camera and tank work. TR with the 3D environment with tank is a bit off. This is why something like Anniversary imo played better.

I think what people misunderstand about tomb raider, it is that it is not trying to be a 3D interpretation of a traditional platformer like mario or DKC. It is trying to be a 3D interpretation of the cinematic platformers of the early 90's such as prince of persia, blackthorne, another world, etc. The ones that try to take a realistic approach to platforming, that are about carefully planning your jumps, where there is fall damage and so you have to look for a way down. The ones were you have several types of jumps or can extend your arms to reach a ledge. I mean... just check out how the 2D portable tomb raiders control and you see that it is exactly that type of game. And I think that in that sense tomb raider succeeds perhaps more than any other game in the genre... It is just not trying to be mario, just like prince of persia was not trying to be mario.

@Evilj82 But my point is that Tomb Raider didn't represent the genre badly, it represented it perfectly, but the genre is one that largely doesn't exist anymore but was very popular back then, which is the cinematic platformer. Which were very punishing 2D sidescrollers where one has to carefully plan his jumps, carefully climb or descend platforms and so on. Tomb Raider doesn't have bad controls, it has good controls for the genre, they are good representation of that control scheme in 3D. But that genre fell out of fashion. But seriously play a few minutes of the original 1989 prince of persia in your browser (the father of the genre) and you'll see the similarities.

​@@Evilj82 Uncharted is not a second attempt at Tomb Raider because Uncharted isn't even a platformer. The thing that everyone misses when they slander Tomb Raider's controls is that they weren't an accident, the platforming is supposed to be precise and Lara's moves are meant to have a specific utility. Uncharted (and later Tomb Raider games) dumbs down and automates so much of the platforming that you're never in any real danger and no jump is scary. There's a difference between a game having bad controls and a game having friction.

The Tomb Raider slander is uncalled for. Those games are still good today! They are puzzle platformers. Lara has movement options and the levels are designed around those movement options. It’s methodical and it’s pretty zen if you meet the game where it is. I love those games. I really enjoyed the remastered collection early this year.

I'm baffled that only Kenny was standing in support of Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider had amazing atmosphere in its exploration. Lara was the first witty female protag that I remember from a game. Those cutscenes fascinated me as a kid, even though I couldn't beat the game. It was downright cinematic. Having played it recently through the collection, I think the dudes are tripping. It takes some getting used to, but once you understand how the grid-based movement works, it's reliable. It's a good game.

The soundtrack alone elevates FFVII sky high and is Nobuo uematsu's masterpiece still to this day. The characters might be the greatest ensemble in any game period, the iconic moments are numerous, the story at that time was great and to top it all it ushered in a new age of jrpg's to countless new fans. FFIX is great granted but it might not even have been a thing without the incredible success of FFVII

FFVI is great no doubt and is close to FFVII for me but FFVII was an evolution in what was possible in an rpg at that time, the scope was so ambitious it needed 3 discs to achieve it. Whenever I compare it to other FF's i always say while others have great moment's and great music sprinkled here and there it's only FFVII that hits those highs on a more consistent basis, it's soundtrack especially is absolutely rammed with banger after banger in multiple genres too all helped by the upgrade in CD sound. I cannot overstate just how amazing it felt once you leave midgar, hear the overworld theme start and realise the game has only really just begun 🤯 I can assure you hardly anyone saw the aerith death coming and still holds up as one of the most emotional and gut wrenching moments in videogaming history. Square just simply were hitting their stride and flexing massively in that PS1 era. Their past games were very good but as soon as FFVII hit they showed another level

Parasite eve probably has one of my fave rpg protagonists... period. Aya Brea is just So cool and awesome. SURE Lara is cool.. but AYA was on another freaking level. Female Protagonist Police officer protagonist that ACTUALLY acts like a Cop ACTUALLY reacts reasonably to all the things going on.. I mean she has a break down, Which is perfectly reasonable. The combat was also fun with the great tunes.. I liked running around dodging attacks and then blasting with my pistol
