A lot of Silent Hill music isn't necessarily what you'd expect in a horror game, so this isn't totally a departure from the rest of the OST. But Laura IS definitely unique among all the characters in SH2 in that she's the only one not walking around in a waking nightmare. She's just kind of doing her own thing, and doesn't really understand why everyone else is acting so weird.
@thewisconsinfiles2 жыл бұрын
For sure, like the part where James is genuinely concerned and tells her it's not safe in silent hill and she just blows him off because she is seeing a different version of the place. She's a child and has never done anything to be beckoned by the town like James, Angela and Eddie have. She came to silent hill to find Mary where as the others were lured there by the town to come face what ever deep trauma each of them has. Laura still had her innocence and therefore was exempt from the hell that was silent hill. I love this series lol.

@@TallicaMan1986 there are so many theories on what exactly Laura is, we know she was residing in the same hospital as Mary and Mary even tells Laura to "take it easy on the sisters", that tells me, at least in my humble opinion, she too was possibly ill. Why else would she be there ? We also know Laura was an orphan, Mary says how she wishes her and James could adopt her. Was she in the care of the orphanage? There's so little information to go on, but ya I have to agree, it's very possible Laura was a ghost and why she's able to navigate silent hill so freely and evade James the way she does. Gaming Muse has some cool theories on why she prob isn't a ghost but again there's still so little to go on! I could talk silent hill all day long haha! Love hearing what everyone else thinks too!

It's brilliant because the fear of Silent Hill is trauma and the past rather than traditional jumpscare so an intimate experience and soundscape is a bold and right choice. I heard somewhere that Yamaoka composed this over the feeling of being on holiday with his lover and feeling that it's not going to last so really fitting for James's story.

For the most part, "music" in Silent Hill games is a lot of atmospheric noise and industrial screaming, but occasionally there will be places in these games where the music is very down to earth and chill, catchy, somber, introspective... even beautiful imo. It takes you by surprise, but when you play the game it feels like it makes sense, and it's a stark contrast that really works. All I can say is that Akira Yamaoka is a LEGEND. Such a talented composer. Your take on Laura being the "positivity" behind this game is pretty spot-on, though I won't say more than that. This track is actually used as the intro for the game, so it sets a mood right away if you watch it. One of the best video game intros of all time, by the way.

Silent Hill is all about self hatred and guilt, the music is supposed to seem kinda self reflective on psychosis. It is absolutely insane how well Akira Yamaoka captures that feeling in his music. Just imagine being trapped with your own personal demons made manifest for real.

@Creepy Girl I mean except for the fact that Silent Hill 1 is also literally the embodiment of Alyssas psyche made manifest in a nightmare brought to life. But yeah lets ignore that part. Just cause it was not the main character does not mean that the original did not explore the themes.

I have a personal theory about why this sounds so out of place in terms of Silent Hill music; Laura is a child, and has no proverbial skeletons in the closet or ghosts to haunt her. She's in Silent Hill to find her friend Mary, that's all. She is innocent, and as such has a theme that sounds out of place and by all accounts, normal. Because at the end of it all, after the horrors James experiences and the people he meets, Laura is just a little girl who wants to see her friend again.

I'll throw out my thoughts since I'm obsessed with this particular series. Guy that does most of the music in the series, or at least used to, is Akira Yamaoka. His work on the series is such an anomaly to me in a really fantastic way. You've got these games about horrific cults, demonic presences, people struggling through nightmare hellscapes, and coming face to face with manifestations of their own twisted psyche. And a lot of the music does match that, with extremely grungy, almost mechanical tracks blaring in your ears during horrific segments. But when the story takes focus and characters are really going through it, the tone completely changes. You have this very 80s sounding rock in spots, really sullen grunge/punk tracks (especially in SH3), and even hip hop beats in some of the later games. It really feels like they grabbed Yamaoka and just told him to make something regardless of the game's themes, which somehow works fantastically. More specifically, I adore Laura's Theme because it hits every single instrumental note I associate with early PS2 games. Those strings, the rising and falling sense of an oncoming journey, all of it screams that era perfectly. They even retain a specific note, the warbling strings way in the background, that are straight from the first game's theme. If it's of interest, Silent Hill 2 is one of the best horror games ever made. For anyone that doesn't know, Silent Hill 2 was a huge departure from the first in that it ditched the cultish horror and rusty metal, blood soaked environments for an unsettling psychological horror. The story is genuinely uncomfortable, with characters dealing with topics such as terminal illness, sexual/physical abuse, genuine sociopathic behaviors/beliefs, and the existential horror of just knowing there's sometimes no escape from it all. Silent Hill 2 is about James, a man who gets a simple letter from his late wife asking him to come meet her at their "special place" in the town they vacationed in. From there it just goes deeper and deeper into unsettling, vicious topics and moments. All of which avoids jumpscares, outright gore, or constant enemies in your face. It's, in my opinion, a complete mastery of the genre that I can still look back on some scenes and feel deeply uncomfortable with very real themes. I highly recommend anyone who hasn't played it, either go out and grab a copy on the PS2, emulate it, or watch a playthrough. It's a genuinely special game. But avoid the HD Collection, for the love of god. It's a disaster. Thanks for reacting to this Jesse! I'm gonna throw out some possible stuff I'd love to see on this channel as well, feel free to ignore it or keep them for future ideas. I'd recommend the track UNDERTALE from Undertale (song's name is the same as the game, it's the game maker's most revised and worked on song), World's End Valentine from Omori, Burn My Dread or The Battle for Everyone's Souls from Persona 3, Axe to Grind from Persona 5 Strikers, Boss Battle Theme 8 (Devil Decadence) or Boss Battle Theme 7 (Shohei/Fionn) from Shin Megami Tensei V, and BIG SHOT or Field of Hopes and Dreams from Deltarune. Hopefully one of those pops up on your radar, but regardless, thanks for introducing me to so many new tracks and trying all of these bangers!

I will add that the best way to get acquainted with SH2 now is still the PC version with the "Enhanced Edition" modification installed. It contains absolutely all the advantages of the console version plus a huge number of improvements that the programmers and artists of the "Town of Silent Hill" team have been working on for more than 5 years. Moreover, a convenient installer has appeared in the latest updates.

I definitely know where you’re coming from saying that everyone should avoid the HD collection. However, if there’s no more options, I’d suggest for people to try it out instead of just missing out on experiencing SH2 & 3... I’ve seen myself in that position & I’m grateful to have the ugly HD version instead of nothing at all, because even with all its horrors, it still manages to convey (most of) what makes these games so unique. Granted, it still sucks, but I think people should give it a try if they don’t have a PC or anything else to better experience those games - I got my copy of the HD collection at a 75% discount or something like that because FUCK ME if I had to pay more than that to Konami for making a shitty porting of these gems & treating them with the utmost disrespect they certainly don’t deserve. So in essence: play them, & FUCK KONAMI!

well, laura isn't the lady in the picture they used for the video. she's a little kid who is the only innocent person in the game. most of the music in the first few silent hill games is more industrial noises and screeching, but everybody remembers the more rock stuff. it's just that good. (i mean the atmospheric screeching is cool in its own way, too, but you can't really listen to it the same way you listened to this song.) and tbh most of the soundtrack is best experienced through playing the games or watching let's plays of them. you can get some of the emotions from just the audio, but having the songs/sounds in the context of the games makes them much more effective. running for your life from monsters down a dimly-lit pulsating nightmare corridor while the hissing of steam and feedback and static shrieks at you is really something else.
@Tasuva2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that the music gets better each game. But it doesn't get worse either. Akira Yamaoka did the soundtrack for most of the games. 1 and 2 were only instrumentals but at 3 and afterwards he had some amazing singers and songwriter joining his team. So you can pretty much check every song from the SH series as long as it's done by Yamaoka and it's great. You're right that the rock music is quite unusual for a horror game but so is the Silent Hill series. It's psychological and survival horror combined with puzzles, interesting characters and most of the time a really deep story. The music has these rock songs, calm and relaxing ambient pieces and some disturbing tracks that sound like you've put a bunch of nails into a washing machine.

Silent Hill excels at creating contrasts between beautiful stories and the horrors that hide within them. This game is about shame, so it is contrasted by the character of Laura who is an innocent child.

You gotta listen to "Silent Hill 1"'s intro music. Sounds more dreamlike and fitting to the game.

If you wanna do more Silent Hill music: For something truly beautiful give SH4 "Room Of Angel" a listen. Worth it. :) For something creepy, listen to "Akira Yamaoka - Resting Comfortably on Pulsating Ambience" with lights out (10 min)...
