The reason why this song sounds so "unhorror" is because the protagonist Heather Mason is 17 at the time of Silent Hill 3, so the vocal tracks like this and the studio mix of "I Want Love" are written to sound like the kind of music a teenage girl like Heather would listen to in the early 2000s
@satyakisil42892 жыл бұрын
Also because Heather lacked the melancholy that James and Harry had when entering Silent Hill. For her it's liminal space and she had nothing to do with it prior to arriving. She was tired when she got there, but she wasn't broken.

Silent Hill is a bit odd as a series. It's definitely a horror series, and most of its music is uncomfortable and atmospheric, intended to unsettle and discomfort. However, it also has a strong sense of melancholy and tragedy weaved throughout, as the characters are forced to deal with both the dark history of the titular town and their own personal demons (which are often strongly linked, if not one and the same). That sense of tragedy is best expressed through these more alt-rock style songs, like You're Not Here, Laura's Song, Hell Frozen Rain, and Room of Angel, which are overall more contemplative and moody than stressful.

The music in Silent Hill seems to be designed to make you uncomfortable and keep you on edge, and really adds to its terrifying atmosphere (the horror is far more psychological than Resident Evil). That being said, their intros are always genuinely enjoyable tracks, and I'd often find myself leaving the game idle on the title screen so that it'd play again

Silent Hill being confused with Resident Evil is honestly not that far off the mark. They both pioneered the Survival Horror genre on Playstation. Resident Evil more payed homage to classic horror like Dawn of the Dead and the like, while Silent Hill went in a more personal existential direction. The fascinating part to me is how the main musical themes reflect the main characters of their respective games. Silent Hill 1 and 2 focusing on guys in their 20's-30's had more dark sounding themes, but Silent Hill 3 focuses on Heather - the girl in the picture - coming into adulthood and all the stress and unwanted attention that brings, and the more punk inspired themes really kinda reflect that.

It's extremely off in every way except basic gameplay core. RE is trashy B-movie about killing zombies, SH - deep psychological thriller focused on exploration of human mind with maybe best art design in history of video games. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn is a prolific voice actor and voice director. She sings for alot of Akira Yamaoka's songs. Silent Hill was born from one of Yamaoka's musical experiments on how to make sounds that unnerve and berate you while playing. He's also a jammin ass musician.

Unnerve is right. The entirety of the final boss theme of the first game (My Heaven) consisted of just two things: percussion, and the sound of a dentist's drill slowed down and reversed.

The good ol' 2000s videogame trope where they would do an attract mode style intro sequence, featuring a bunch of cutscenes from the game with some nice music playing in the background, all the while unintentionally spoiling a bunch of stuff. I really hope people requests more Silent Hill, it's such a journey, these 2 songs that you have reacted to, doesn't even scratch the surface, (obviously) it's really hard trying to give details about what makes Silent Hill and its music so special, so intriguing, mesmerizing, and of course horrifying, but beautiful and touching at the same time, unfortunately it's one of those legendary franchises that's no longer used or produced in videogame format in 10 years or so, instead......it shares Metal Gear's sad fate and humilliation, being Pachinko machines (japanese casino machines), there has been an unaccountable amount of rumors along the years that it might come back, just like Metal Gear, but only sadness and dissapointment remains, we yet still stand in foolish hope that someday it happens, a remake, a reboot, a completely new game, something, anything, perhaps there IS something in the works, maybe not, but the sure thing is.....the day that Konami actually announces the return of Silent Hill, will be something overwhelming and deeply moving for a whole lot of people, including myself, thank you for your reaction and analysis Jesse ❤️

Doesn't really feel like a song for a psychological horror game until you pay attention and realize how sad it is. Especially in context. Silent Hill does a lot with using character's issues and putting that into the town and monster designs. Like if a character had an abusive mother that'll manifest in a monster that's vaguely feminine and with huge clubbing arms. Which is messed up because concepts of birth and parenting feature a lot in this game. As a horror game though they really didn't have a lot of jump scares. It's mostly constant, unending dread which I think is a positive, but some people might not like that.

This theme is way off from the normal feeling of Silent HIll because mostly represent Heather (the lead character) pretty well. She is BY FAR the best "normal teenage girl" in vidya: she acts like a normal person would act in such a nightmarish reality so her theme is mostly in sync with a teenage vibe. You nail the foreshadowing, she is singing about her father who is the protagonist of Silent Hill 1.
@Torthrodhel Жыл бұрын
Always thought this picture of Heather was a little ill-fitting in that way. Doesn't seem like the sort of pose she'd be doing for any reason. She's definitely the best character by far for the little comments she makes about everything you examine as you go along. So much character is shown just in that. Like I love the moments where she's unkeen to loot a locker because that's someone's personal belongings, or she only takes one coin from a huge pile because that's all she needs for the vending machine and she doesn't think of herself as a thief. Even with the bit in the beginning where she just immediately knows what to do in the situation where a strange man isn't respecting her autonomy (go into a toilets and escape through the back)... when you consider what needs to happen to force someone to have such a tactic immediately-to-mind and just think nothing of it... it's so connectable. It actually hit really close to my own experiences, and I was already in love with the series after the first two games. Heather is just amazing, especially next to all the other female protagonists at the time who frequently looked like you stumbled across someone's softcore fluff material, and kept making you ask "how the hell is she even moving around in that". She was definitely a breath of fresh air - takes after her father in that respect (who was himself against-the-trend, being a single father represented as a genuine loving parent who'd do anything for his daughter... like, when did you ever see that back then?). James was much more conventional, but there was a storytelling reason for that. And Henry was super introverted, and that was kinda not done so much (it did take a while to realise what they were going for with him, though). I also like listing Maria as a Silent Hill protagonist because you can play as her in that bonus scenario, and that scenario revealing a hidden character of desperation and depression beneath all her elsewise-sass and cruelty, and especially the vibe that she had very little personal agency, was a thing I really connected with too, even if she was more conventionally sexualized for story purposes.

Also, he did all sfx and noises, and those can get VERY creepy. And when music does appear in the gameplay expect it to be some of the creepiest pieces you've heard or a chill moment of respite. Tracks that are more like “songs” but with a darker tone would be tracks like Overdose Delusion, Tender Sugar, and Rain of Brass Petals - Three Voices edit. Another one that’s very good but female-centric is Letter - From Lost Days. Yamaoka claimed influence from things like Metallica and Depeche Mode to Massive Attack and the theme to Twin Peaks. Very interesting places to pull from, and a lot to analyze. Looking forward to seeing more reactions. Try Room of Angel next, another very popular one, much darker.

It's interesting seeing someone listenting tho these songs for the first time without any context at all from the games. For me the songs always made sense and never seemed out of place, they fit the game perfectly, but it's god damned impossible to describe why, you just have to play the games. Whenever I hear any Silent Hill music now I always think of how the games made me feel, they're definitely not your average horror experience(talking about Silent Hill 1 throught 3 here, 4 is a decent game, but not up to the standards of the previous 3) They're much more reliant of atmosphere and the anticipation of danger, and sometimes it can be downright opressive in it's visual, and especially audio design. The combat is very much in the background of things that are important, in that way it's quite different from the contemporary Resident Evil games, which are much harder in terms of conserving ammo and actual *SURVIVAL* Horror elements. I much prefer Silent Hill though, they had an impact on me that no other game series ever had, which is quite impressive seeing as how I was already 20 years old when the first game came out. Anyway, hope you get around to trying them out some day, but for the love of god avoid the "HD collection" like the plague, try to get your hands on the original versions, the HD collection actually ruins the games in many aspects, I have no clue how they messed it up so bad. Edit: Also you might want to give "Silent Hill 4 - Room of Angel" a listen, definitely the best part of the 4:th game :) And also check out the intro song from Silent Hill 1 if you feel like it, it's just called "Silent Hill" I think, my personal favourite from the entire series. Edit again: Oh yeah, there's playlists of Silent Hill 2 OST on youtube, you should put that on sometime and just give it a listen, no need to make a video about it, unless you really want to, but it could be interesting to see how you react to the entire OST played and see if you find yourself feeling one way or another, I always get emotional while listening to it, but that's because I have connected memories to the game, no clue how ppl with no previous experience would react to it.

The comparison with RE doesn't make much sense from a game-feel perspective, but makes a ton of sense when you know the history and circumstances. It was actually commissioned as a Resident Evil clone to cash in on the trend - that's what they asked the team to do. It's just not what the team ended up making, since they wanted something a bit better than just a pretender... they were a bunch of people collected together because the company didn't know what else to do with them, and they were figuring it out as they went along (often the best way art gets made). The idea of fog being so prevolent was initially just a creative solution to the PS1's poor 3D draw distance; while Resident Evil cleverly made use of 2D pictures put behind invisible 3D rigs that mimicked their construction, so as to achieve a then-impossible graphical background fidelity (if it were done all in 3D), the SH team wanted to distinguish their game by just going full 3D. The result is a worse graphical fidelity and the need for cover-ups such as fog or darkness to hide draw distance, BUT you can also have what now would be thought of as "normal camera", allowing for some wide environments to walk around in, AND they made the game's signiature strange camera angles (inspired by RE's) but they could actually move around with you, which was unheard of then (and is rare enough now, too - watch someone play through the early-game "alleyway" sequence of the first game and tell me you see that sort of camerawork nowadays, it's a real show-off of exactly what I'm talking about). I adore that and sadly it's largely been lost as the series has gone on (teams on each game always changed around a bit, but a noticeable drop in quality occurs when they start outsourcing the teams entirely). SHs 1, 2 and 3 were at the very peak of graphical fidelity for the time, too. They really kept pushing the envelope in their horror niche. 4 wasn't as impressive in this way (mostly because it was made alongside 3, which looks better in some respects, and only completed afterwards). "5" (Homecoming, which was when they stopped numbering them) looked significantly worse than 3 and even somewhat worse than 2, despite being on the then-next-gen PS3/XB360. They never really did catch up after that to the technical excellence they pioneered in the early days. Lighting is very worth mentioning. Each game until 4 had a pocket flashlight that lit up wherever you were going. It seems really basic now, but was damn beautiful back then especially in the first game on PS1. 4 made a lot of changes to try and innovate, and unfortunately most of them didn't end up being better than the 'traditional' formula... but it still has a good story and atmosphere that feel in-line with the original bunch. The games also made use of background tracks fading between one-another. High tech for the time, and while very far from the first to try it (and other games had even done more sophisticated versions), it really did fit well. I particularly appreciate a small piece of music in SH2, that plays during a descent down a corridor. It's very effective in a way I'll explain now. It's made of a simple unnerving sound (sounds like kinda a cross between a hunting horn and a monster voice). You've gone into a Historical Society building, and are about to find yourself impossibly and spookily travelling into pieces of actual history (buildings that are no longer there, etc). This is where the geography of the world begins to get screwy (having been fairly consistent before at least in terms of general measurements). You find a hole in a wall, and this corridor is stupidly long before reaching a door into escalating geographical shenanigans. Nobody would for any reason build this. The sound in the music plays at particular pulses in the background. As you go along the corridor remains graphically uniform, as if to wonder if it will ever end, and instead of your progress being marked by the look of your surroundings, it's marked by the frequency of the sound pulsing subtly increasing. It's slightly randomized, too. So by the time you finally do reach the end of it, it's pulsing about twice as often as when you started, and very nearly overlapping itself. Then didn't have to do this, they could've just had a track playing. But... that's the sort of love they put into these games. You'd often come across the kind of added detail where if you were thinking outside the game you'd say to yourself "they didn't need to do that" but it all added up to help keep you immersed and away from thinking in that sort of mode. With those sorts of refinements, you could experience the excellent story, atmosphere and characters... and largely ignore how basic and repetitive the combat, exploration and inventory systems were. They really knew where they wanted the focus to be and what they could excel at.

Bro I hope you jump into these games they do consume your soul lol and the songs definatley paint a different picture , there is a song called end of small sanctuary in game right before your decent into hell and it's really the last bit of peace you get until the end

Parts of lyrics are foreshadowing the plot, if you ignore their context. Also this is the mood of the game.

It was the first, the one with a female singer you're probably thinking of is Silent Scream, honestly I mainly love the Manniquen Monster in it and the Credits sequence show how threatening it is.

After SH3, the games got worse and worse. The best OST is SH4 though imo. Close call with SH3.
