I’m just glad they make it a bit more clear this time around what he does. In the original he smothers her with the pillow she’s laying on but as soon as he reaches for it there’s so much noise and cutting everywhere you can barely even tell what he did and it doesn’t help that they had originally had audio in of her muffled screaming to help establish whats going on and cut it out last minute. I played the original back in the day, and for 20 years I thought she died naturally in the hospital and in the video scene his arm moving around is him going to embrace his dying / dead wife one final time. One last hug and kiss on the forehead before she dies. For the last 20 years I honestly didn't realise he murdered her - finally, FINALLY, they make this obvious. I actually never understood what everyone raved about when playing the original. A guy's wife got sick and died, and he's really sad - I genuinely never made the murder connection, or James feeling guilty. He never even admits to murdering her. This sequel did the right thing - the kid then asking, and he finally admits it: "I killed her" It's taken me two decades to get here. Unbelievable!

I was I think 18 at the time, a fluent English speaker, but the video didn't show shit. I literally did not parse anything from it, other than him reaching in for a hug maybe. It was zoomed and cropped. And his "I killed her" I assumed to be metaphor, or him pulling life support. Or feeling guilt at not emotionally supporting her. Look man, I was not big into subtext or narrative subtlety. If they didn't explicitly show pillow on face, and the word murder being used, then I was just going to glaze over and go back to Counter Strike or Metal Gear Solid 2, or whatever else I played back then. Let's compare MGS2, since it was on PS2 too, and a similar time. There was no subtlety to that - Kojima painstakingly hammered every narrative beat across like a child hitting a nail - and that was about the level of nuance I expected from games.

That transition from the Otherworld back to reality had me put down the game down for a minute. By this point, it's easy to forget that we've been in the Otherworld the whole time-in James' mental picture of these places. Then we return, and truth is so, so much worse. Angry people come here to comment and he gets clicks and views. It feels somewhat pathetic, but I guess that's how the world just is. @@maximocapcom he killed her for a couple reasons. He didn't want to see her suffer so he tried putting her out of her misery even though part of her didnt want to die. But he also did it because he hated her for taking away his life for the past 3 years since her illness, possibly because of her pushing him away and being verbally abusive...
