I think original Maria is ever so slightly better, but James is so much better in this version. From the shock, to the clear torment he conveys, even the way he touches the door on the way out.
@touchtablet3364Ай бұрын
The first time, like many others, I thought “that's strange. The tone isn't the same”. Then, as I watched the 2 scenes over and over again, I came to the unpopular conclusion that the one in the remake was much more powerful for my taste. In the OG, she's Maria, then Marie for a few seconds, then Maria again. In the remake, she's Maria/Mary all the way through, the ambiguity is much more present, the temptation is throbbing, and therefore much more confusing. In the original, I'll admit it, her teasing works, she gets in, and her “I'm not your Mary” is devastating. But in the original, it's even more devious and insidious, she's loving, teasing, comforting (especially after prison), we clearly have this “bewitching” side like the original, but the climax comes at 1:37, it's like a diabolical evil snake “doesn't matter who I am”, she's put James to bed, then comes the scene where everything materializes: old memories, new ones, Marie, Maria, desire, love, tenderness, sex, trust, charm, reassurance “nothing matters anymore I'm here James”. And that's what the remake brings to the table, unlike the original: James is totally lost on the one hand, and on the other, he's 2 steps away from failing/succumbing to the call of the city. 2:02 is the height of confusion. Then notice how he “caresses” the door afterwards. "You don't want to touch me” is 100 times more powerful than ‘I won't be able to do anything through these bars’. As is the coldness of this new Maria: in the original, she spat her venom, here she's impassive, imperial, queenly, clearly dominating James, and in a much more subtle way than in the original. Listen carefully to the background music too (it's the same every time you come back to it, or after she's dead): a mixture of hope, despair, resignation, fatality. For me, even if the form of the original sounded better (Maria's text among other things), the remake's substance is far superior. (And God knows I hold the original in very, very high esteem)

Her toying with James here is just so amazing. I’ve played the original game so many times, and I absolutely think they just killed it here. People need to remove their nostalgia and realize this is such a great performance by both.
@jameslough632923 күн бұрын
It’s different strokes for different folks. The original version of the scene was more subtle and the threat was so subliminal that you wouldn’t pick up on it unless you were really paying attention to her speech patterns. Whereas in the remake, the way she speaks in this scene is a lot more clearly ominous and threatening and you can really feel how disturbed James is by the whole thing. Both versions of the scene are VERY creepy and off putting in their own way.

Having my headphones on in the dark. Hearing "Don't you want to touch me?" I actually had sort of a "why are my eyes watering up?" moment. Just that tempting, gentle and still ominous tone to it. Maria's actress nailed that line. ( And GOOD LORD JAMES AND HIS SAD CONFUSED FACE )
@hooray4paradiddles2 ай бұрын
They definitely were interpreting the scene a bit differently here but i don't think it's any less valid of a way. I get a sense in this version that Maria is a little more self-aware here and is more overtly toying with James. She almost feels like the town is directly speaking through her, like she's possessed by an intelligence far larger and more frightening than her. The original version will always hold a special place in my heart but this version is good stuff as well.

When Maria starts talking about the hotel and videotape, it gives me Silent Hillls PT vibes, mainly the monologue about the family. The cold and indifferent yet vaguely snide recounting of information or events that someone else shouldn’t know or have details on. Especially the delivery of “you were always so forgetful…” It’s so haunting, I love it.

It is a pitty that it is lacking on maria's part on some key sections... it needed a different tone. But damn!!! jame's actor is amazing. In general for this remake, james is just so on point every time. Also I think that showing her face at 00:26 plain like that is a big mistake. When maria's face is shown it should be always with the jail bars between her and the camera. Showing her face directly like that breaks the scene. Either way, the scene's still super good. Amazing job. That ending's a great decision...the final shot left me speachless.

I agree. Both scenes are great, they're just a different take on Maria. In the OG game, they made her sinister. Whereas in the remake, she's apathetic, it's like she's aware that she only exists in James' imagination and will never be "real".

I now love both versions. The original one my favorite moment is when she says "I'm not your mary" this new voice actress is really good to, with the new scene my favorite part is her little chuckle, so well done. She's still changing from maria and mary in this scene just on different beats. They did so good with this remake.

I honestly love everything about the remake way more than the og. Sure in the og this scene is more iconic, but the way they read their lines back there was like they are in a video game, in the remake this feels like an actual conversation and flows more naturally, and that's true for all new cutscenes. In the og it felt like characters trying to read every sentence like it's dramatic, meanwhile in remake they make it natural which I like more

the more i play the remake, enjoying the story of James' time in SH for the first time, the more curious I become to see what the original story beats looked and felt like. I really love this scene, though I do enjoy the original stern-sounding "Im not your Mary" She says it a little too casually here for my liking, almost feels rushed over but with how long the camera stays on her, just staring in silence after she says it, also works in its own eerie way. And finally, something about the dialogue change at the end as James tries joggling some sense to the situation, darting his eyes around the room and stuttering- damn video game acting has come a long way

Hmmm I don't like her deeper voice tone, she does sound different as Mary, but the thing is about the original is that Mary was the more high pitched one, and Maria was the sultry "deeper voice" seductive one. Mary sounds earnest, and friendly in a completely disarming way. That's why the OG is creepier, because it's almost as if she's completely unaware how weird the stuff she's saying are... She phases in and out, and doesn't quite know what's going on herself. But she figures there's no point in thinking about it, or just completely represses in the same way James does for his memories when he starts to remember stuff. And if you played Born From A Wish in the OG, that happened too when you played as Maria. Someone pointed out that you see James's face here and he's clearly given into the temptation - finally! Which you don't get to see in the original, and that's actually brilliant.

It's odd. I like both portrayals of James, but for different reasons. The original James seems completely unfazed by the horrors, which makes him unrelatable, which makes everything more dream-like. As if I'm a third party observer of this alien and unintelligible world, including the protagonist. The remake James definitely seems bewildered and lost, which makes him relatable, closer to how I would be behaving, so I'm not as much of a third party observer. But, this makes the world seem less surreal and less incomprehensible.

When she tries to be Mary and switch to Maria there's literally no difference hello? Why is he Mary so cold?? The og when she brought the hotel topic she was so sweet and you could tell her flirting demeanour is gone and then she says "I'm not your Mary" so coldly and emotionless and then she switches back to Maria when James asks her again. She did voice the character but forgot the acting part, but I love the remake so much I just don't like this part in particular because of the lighting and Mary/Maria voice being almost the same.
@gio_graphyАй бұрын
There is definitely a switch, the fact that so many havent picked up on it is kinda shocking. When Maria talks, she speaks in an uptalk way which means that her voice goes higher at the end of the sentence. You can hear it with the sentence that ends in "touch me". When Mary is speaking, she is using downtalk meaning her voice doesnt rise at the end of the sentence and if anything, it goes lower. You can hear it in the sentence that ends with "someone else?". One is supposed to sound more alluring (uptalk) while the other is supposed to come off as more authoritative (downtalk). Also if anything it makes more sense that Mary WOULDNT be speaking to him a sweet tone, considering what he had done to her and at this point he hadnt repented yet. If anything in the original she sounds sickly sweet so it clearly comes off as an act but here she's speaking to him in a passive aggressive tone, she's not trying to use a sweet tone to cover up her distaste for him.

She sounds too flat and lifeless here. Mary, Maria, they sound the same coming from her, and "I'm not your Mary" is just thrown in here instead of delivered with the cold anger that made it memorable. And the original's lighting was so eerie. James was handled better here, but overall, it was a flub. I'm sure someone will come along to try and defend it and say I'm reaching for things to hate or whatever, but I actually think critically, so...
