They were way too quick with the cut to anyway. Totally missing the gold of seeing Maria finally cracking with James’ lack of care and empathy. If they actually added that the scene would’ve been done right
@jackspedicy3 ай бұрын
This felt so underwhelming. They cut out lines in this scene for no reason. Maria’s anger in the original, has a shot as James is talking, she shakes her head and is building up disappointment and anger in her body language before she says in a very unhinged way, “Anyway!?”. OG Maria even pauses before she speaks after James is done speaking looking at James in disbelief, again building that tension and anger. You can even see how uneasy OG James is thru his body language, he steps back as Maria yells at him, then is cornered into a wall and then shamefully looks towards the floor away from Maria. All those subtleties are gone in the remake. Here it seems the remake reaction is kind of flat.

It *is* underwhelming. And no, it doesn't symbolize Mary's verbal abuse all that much. The devs have simply overlooked a crucial detail from the original which has ruined Maria even further. Ready? OG Maria has freaking *reptile eyes* in this scene. And they come and go depending on her mood. This is symbolical of Maria herself! being born from James' desires and all that. She literally exists because he wished it! And him not caring or being neglectful towards her amplifies her not-so-human appearance.

Even ignoring the voice acting, there are a number of changes to the cinematography that makes it feel worse. 1:45 The shot where it cuts back to Maria's reaction as she looks clearly offended is gone 1:51 The three second long pause is gone. You don't have time to really let how careless James was being set in, and you don't see Maria's rage slowly reach her breaking point since in the remake, she says her line as soon as James is done speaking 1:55 No cut back to James who looks very clearly taken aback from her sudden burst of anger, even backing away Additionally, I think the choice of music is a bit distracting. In the original, the only sounds were James and Maria talking, which really let their voices and words simmer between lines.

As far as the elevator scene goes, the idea of Maria cold, blank death stare being kind of forced upon James face was a nice touch. When you consider that the whole point is to force James to remember, seeing the death face of his wife would have been traumatic. Kind of like “here’s your dead wife’s face, see it? She’s dead”. The other scenes and the letter, straight fumbled. The emotion when Mary reads the letter is straight raw, which makes it so touching.

While they both are drawing influences from Mary and James' experience while she was dying in the hospital, they are vastly different contexts. I think the problem with this scene is the editing. In the original Maria sounds angry, like she snapped after James not really caring about her besides all of her efforts to seduce him (after all, thats her entire reason of existence) you can feel her pain, anger and impotence about this. The way she speaks also feels more manipulative since thats what she wants to do, manipulate James so he choses to stay with her In the remake she sounds just...sad. Like genuine sadness. She doesnt sound like a woman who considered suicide because of not wanting to accept her destiny. She doesnt sound like a woman who struggled to accept the fact that the only purpose on her life is to stay with a man who killed his wife. They took so much away from her character and it hurts since I really love Maria :( The scene feels so fast paced too? Even if what I mentioned didnt happen it just overalls feel...awkard. OG SH2 has Maria lash out due to James' nonchalance. Then immediately contrast it her breaking down. It's manipulation at its finest. James is taken aback. Remake is more standoff-ish, more focused at the task at hand. OG is pulled in by Maria. He reacts with more empathy, like the average man would. But, also, more easily tricked. OG is more of a stageplay brought to life. More theatrical. Like it was meant to be performed, not played on a screen. Remake is more intimate. Those little nuances you wouldn't normally get are highlighted. Notice the pause after Maria says, "you're supposed to take care of me." It feels almost voyeuristic. Both versions are valid. I seem to be the one who prefers the new cutscenes to the old ones. Regardless of what anyone thinks, these 2 games were made in different times and different methods were used. It was never going to be the same, but I really love the remake’s direction and acting is not as flat and awkward as before. Again, it’s all about preference, but don’t let bias and love for the original ruin the new game. You can tell they love and respect the source material, unlike other remakes and remasters.

This is why gamers do not deserve any games. It was great scene but players can't being mad about everything

I'm probably the only one who prefer's the VA of James in the remake. The original sounds like.. classic cheesy RE1 voice acting to me.

Guy Cihi definitely has a unique voice that greatly contributes to the atmosphere and vibes the OG is known for, but Luke Roberts straight up kills it as James in every scene. You can hear so much emotion in that first "Mary!" at 0:00.

I feel as if the importance of voice acting was versed between the two games, as in Mary/Marina gave better performance and emphasized in the og silent hill 2, whereas James in the remake was takes the spotlight
