Its timeless, and honestly I don't think any survival horror games (aside from maybe sh3) have reached its heights. The game never goes for cheap scares and every monster encounter ties directly with the character's mental state. Its themes are heavy af and the sound design is so so good! Sure the combat is jank, but it always was, even for the time. But it was never the point, if anything James being bad at combat adds tension.

What I really like about Silent Hill 2 Remake's graphics is that the environment seem to be very grounded to reality. I find that Bloober Team are very good at creating really nicely detailed worlds with close to photorealistic elements in atmosphere, assets and colors they use. When James walks from the parking lot through the path in the woods, it looks really natural and reminds me a lot of the paths I can walk myself around in my area where I live. Animations can seem a bit lackluster and even though they're doing a decent job, the animations seem to vary a bit in terms of believability and fluidity Combat seems to be improved but still looks clunky. Players will compare Silent Hill to Resident Evil so Silent Hill has to be able to stand up to those games. If the combat doesn't feel good, people will run the game into the ground. The thing is, people said the same shit about Resident Evil 2. "It's supposed to be slow, it's supposed to have bad controls, it's supposed to have pre-rendered single image backgrounds,it's supposed to have the slow door opening animations. People didn't think it would feel like Resident Evil without those PS2 era "features." Resident Evil wouldn't be in the middle of its popularity renaissance right now if Capcom had kept those things from the old games. Sure, they'd satisfy the handful of core players who've been playing since the original, but to be successful and profitable, they needed to attract a new audience. That's what Silent Hill is attempting as well. I still have my doubts that Bloober Team was the right studio for the job, but we'll see.

Lord knows we've had many stealth game series where they added so much action that it lost its way. This is such a meme, I always roll my eyes when people bring it up. You can make combat "not feel good" by means other than making it mechanically awful to control, there are tons of ways. For example combat can feel "bad" because you have limited resources and trying to run and gun enemies is certain death, so if you feel like you are always barely hanging on then that by itself will make you dread combat. Dead Space 1 at the hardest difficulty is a good example of this, and even the RE4 remake when played on Professional on a new save will make you want to engage in combat in as little as possible due to how stacked the odds are against you. Not saying SH2 remake will do this though, it's Bloober, not Capcom, they're not known for their finely tuned game design.

The point being made that SH2 doesn’t hold up graphically/technologically compared to MGS3 seems strange to me. On PS2, SH2 ran at 60fps, with the fog creating a great effect and atmosphere while simultaneously making sure the game ran smoothly. Even the prerendered cut-scenes played back at 60fps, which to me seems miraculous, given the limitations. The murky art direction and dark environments coupled with the heavy grain filter hide some less attractive aspects well and the dynamic shadows create some stellar results. MGS3 on the other hand, while technically more ambitious, suffers greatly from obvious low res-textures which aren’t able to hide behind darkness and filters, and the frame rate regularly dipped below 30. **Edit** I was corrected that the original release actually ran at 30 in gameplay. I still hold the opinion that it has aged better than MGS3, but that is entirely subjective.

SH2 did not run at 60 fps on PS2. It was 30 fps for PS2 and XBOX. Your CRT TV ran in interlaced mode which can give the impression of a smoother frame rate... but it did not run at 60 fps. Only the PC Enhanced Edition allowed 60 fps (and only within the last year or two). SH2 on PS2 also had vertex lighting instead of shaded per pixel lighting (like PC and XBOX had). SH3 on PS2 had the same lighting limitations. So for the PS2 version, yes those versions did not age well in some regards technically... but not in art direction (though some textures are really low resolution). For their day though, it was amazing. I still remember it 23 years ago.
@Ozziw1624 ай бұрын
@@TerryRed You are correct, actual gameplay did run at 30, while the prerendered cutscenes were 60. Don’t know if I got it mixed up with MGS2, which did run at 60, or if I just remembered the cutscenes running at 60 and applied it to the actual game, but regardless, SH2 on PS2 ran at 30 in gameplay. But I still think the shadows were hugely impressive, even though the actual light cast upon the environments were utilising per vertex shading. It was, and still remains a technical feat, especially in regards to those hugely impressive amounts of alpha transparency. It even got the original Xbox beat in that regard, which had severely cut down fog effects. And actually playing it, I think it holds up better than MGS3, but that may be (absolutely is) entirely subjective.

Should be compared more to MGS2 Sons of Liberty, imo. MGS3 was already iterated on by Kojima when he added the 3rd person option. Konami is just adding new graphics over Kojima's previous work. SH2, on the other hand was designed solely around mostly-fixed camera angles.

Lumen Global illumination should’ve been used in the 60fps performance mode instead of reflections because the lighting is far more important than reflections in a game like this. The PlayStation 5 is capable of 60fps with global illumination if the devs spend the necessary time fully optimizing taking full advantage of the PS5 hardware but it seems as though they aren’t gonna spend the time, and effort to optimize to include global illumination in the performance mode. Regardless they could’ve substituted in the global illumination instead of reflections in the Performance mode at the least but they could do both if they put forth the effort to fully optimize.

Why didn't you let John handle this one? Y'all said the IGN buyout didn't affect DF but I don't know, this one has me questioning if it did. 9:00 Silent Hill 2 had one single "jumpscare moment," and it was when Laura plays the piano randomly in the Hotel cafeteria at the end of the game. Any other jumpscare that appears in Silent Hill 2 remake is 100% a new addition by Bloober, because Bloober has a bad habit of thinking "oh, jumpscare scary." Silent Hill 2 was a departure from the first game, and therefore did not feature jumpscares like the first game did. Not a shock to hear Bloober has problems with performance. It's a classic Bloober game staple: every Bloober game has performance issues. Combat still looks very rough. Some of the animations look janky in a way that the original game did not. In the original game, fights with Pyramid Head were never about combat. You never had to do damage to Pyramid Head. (Many people are acting like any criticism is Toxic criticism~BUT~Praising everything like it's perfect is ALSO Toxic in some ways) *For me the overall tone such as The dialog, the voice acting seems off. The attitudes & vibes of each character & their personalities don't fit. It sounds like they don't understand the characters or how to achieve the correct tone throughout the game. I hope it will be good. I'm just worried this game will treat us like children tho. With hand holding gameplay. Button prompts, Toned down storytelling, you name it. Hopefully they don't go that direction where "they don't want to make people too uncomfortable" because this game is meant to make people uncomfortable. If they aren't okay with creating an uncomfortable, inappropriate game then they really picked the wrong team to make a game such as this. The movement seems really stiff, it's like the character isn't interacting with their environment. I'm ok with changing the camera but I don't see why they couldn't adjust the camera for particular locations tho.. that effect can really convey particular things thru particular perspectives.. I wish the fog was more intense, dense. I wish the dark was more intense, oppressive, forcing you to rely on your flashlight immensely & your radio. I'm okay with them making some changes. There are ways many things can be changed and still hold the same core of this game. I hope they find ways to achieve that. (it is annoying how divided and out of control a lot of people are getting. I wish things weren't so weirdly divided. Then some counter the critical people with a sorta Toxic Positivity. I wish valid criticism could be heard and addressed. It will be nice if things can chill out and we can get back to being able to critique things in a healthy way again lol)

See people say that and then you’ll ask them what their favorite games are and it’ll be like 3 Sony first party titles, RDR2 and then some title from the game boy that got them into gaming. People like pretty visuals, this will never change. It’s on companies to figure out how to keep costs down but maintain visual quality. It’s not our problem as consumers.

As soon as I hear for the modern audience my heart sinks and with that I am less likely to buy it, it’s a shame because as good as this remaster looks and plays they will turn many potential buyers off. If these game developers continually depend on the modern audience who ever they think this modern audience is they are shore to fail in their sales, but it does seem more important to today’s developers to cater to this supposed modern audience and not their core buyers, which is a shame because they lose sales and we don’t get the games we want. This is not just a statement on silent hill remaster but the state of a lot of games being released in general.

@@Conjurer54 I know what you mean when you say modern audience. I'm saying that's not what the devs mean when they say "updating for a modern audience." If you play current year games you are that modern audience. Them updating for modern audiences is simply updating the gameplay, graphics, and storytelling to be competitive with what is currently on the market. To attract current year gamers and entice them to play SH2. People are twisting the meaning of this interview as "pandering for the woke."
@Conjurer544 ай бұрын
Of course I agree that producing or updating games using the things you mention to improve the game experience is fantastic for all of us, but I think that most of us can agree that developers, NOT ALL, are inserting more and more wokery into their games, which is turning many players away from buying their products. For those developers who continue down this road will lose many paying customers and risk the possibility of going out of business completely, and if that happens we all lose. Sadly some developers think woke is more important than customers and sales.

Funny how people all focus on the technicalities, which can be fixed by mods/patches. The unsalvageable thing here is actually the acting. Feels like a fan film, instead of a Lynchian dreamscape of the original. 🥴 The acting is professional, but does not fit the trippy mood of this game, (e.g. the protagonist is too quick to respond in conversations, which does not fit the behaviour of a depressed, confused and disassociative person) They got it all wrong😮💨 it's like hiring Hollywood actors for a European auteur film.
