Great "Phantoms" commentary. The film was released in 1998 and SH in February 1999. Those are some impressive narrative skills and technical work by the creators of the game, looking back at the short time period they had to create a finished product.

I wonder why every one says 2 or 3 are their favourite SH. I find SH1 is the best of them. There is much more primal, rusty fear then in any other SH. The Otherworld is way scarier then in the other parts. It's much rougher in it's Atmosphere. The other SH games feel kinda light in this regard.

It’s because of the story and ideas presented were so well done and groundbreaking at the time(and even today in terms of execution). It falls behind the original in terms of pure gameplay. The first one is better in terms of pacing, exploration, combat, boss fights, challenging the player and most of all...puzzles. This is why SH1 has always been my favorite and why I was initially disappointed with the almighty SH2(*gasp*). I found it a huge step backwards from the foundation Silent Hill built. I remember anticipating SH2 like I had no other game before. Expecting them to take everything I loved about the original and making it 100times better. But when it came out, I found all they improved were the graphics and controls. Everything else felt watered down and drab. I found the opening of SH2 was bland and boring(at the time) while in Silent Hill 1 it had a much better opening and set up with that long walk down the alleyway with the cinematic camera angles and slow progression into chaos and disturbing imagery. The puzzles, while creative, were also a step backwards. The otherworld was a lot more intense and oppressive in the original, while in SH2 I could barely notice the transition. Also compare the “human friend turned foe boss fight” idea from Silent Hill 1(possessed Cybil Bennet) to the clunky and janky one in SH2(Eddie) and you’ll see what I mean. It was also far too easy as enemies weren’t on your ass as much as they were in Silent Hill 1. No fast moving or flying enemies. They all just slowly walk at you. Now I have sense warmed up to SH2 over the years and much of the criticisms I had back then as a disappointed , entitled 15 year old have sense subsided as I now have a deeper understanding of why they went the route they did with SH2 and consider it one of my favorite games of all time. It boils down to this. In terms of being ART, Silent Hill 2 is better. In terms of being a GAME, Silent Hill 1 is better.

"A woman came down from planet Vulcan". You're right. It's a reference to Star Trek; but it may also be a reference to time-travel. Alessa is possibly half alien half human as well, and because of that she's able to mentally project herself into other times and places. It's just an idea! Also, the spiral designs may be a symbol for hypnosis. Very fun lore run! :D I never heard anyone explain SH as well as you have. -Kendra

I just wanted to say, Fungo I've been watching your videos since I was 17 (I'm now 29); and I could listen to you for days. I never get sick of it!! lol :D I've been a fan of SH since I was a child. I remember first watching my brother play it; he got so scared he turned the damn console off. That was his first experience with SH 1. I actually beat the game! :D To this day, I cannot believe the amount of content that went into this game. I'm involved in the making of a new Silent Hill video game for Sony. It will be called Returning To Silent Hill. A demo will be released next Summer 2021. Anyhow, nice Silent Hill lore discussion. I too can see that the boiler explosion was a cover-story by the cult and company!!

They made it to where the house boiler explosion was the cause of Alyssa is suppose death. In reality, Alyssa never died. During the entire first Silent Hill videogame, Alyssa is in a coma in the real world.

And Twin Perfect completely proven in SH the meaning of “sacrifice” does not involve fire. The backstory shows that the fire incident was what destroyed the cult's plan. Also, “The Order” is a mistranslation, they have no such name. And, she's Alessa not Alyssa. You get so many things wrong that I almost believe they hired you to work on a new shino.
