I can try to show more in the future. I don't want to use the free camera to 'cheat'. So I only looked at the enemy once I knew the engaging them was pretty much impossible.

@@Wolfpack345 Understood, that's basically what I meant. Once it was clear you weren't able to engage it would have been fun to spend a couple minutes getting a flying free cam tour of the enemy ships, looking at the ship models. I haven't looked at SH4 in-game in years. Felt like a tourist craning my neck and head trying to get a good look at the ships. lol

I know it's wo years ago when this livestreamed, but it made me reminisce over my SH4 days. I read a great book about on S-39 that began the war stationed at Cavite in the Philippines "Pigboat 39." It was a fascinating read. One really got the story of how cramped and uncomfortable these pre fleet class boats were. They had much in common with the early Type II and Type VII U Boats. I think that the Carrier Task Force that was portrayed was representing the two Japanese Carriers withdrawing from the raids on Dutch Harbor just before the battle of Midway. They were to be a distraction to Nimitz as well as prevent the US from intervening the Attu and Kiska Island landings. Too bad you couldn't close to attack. It would not have been fun dodging the destroyers whether you hit or not!

Great Video and thanks for keeping the sim alive! Quickie Tip: If speed (kts) is yds/100 after 3 mins and 3 mins = 180 secs then speed is - yds/100 after 180 secs or, to simplify (divide by 10) kts = yds/10 after 18 secs ...or...(divide by 2) kts = yds/5 after 9 secs Nice formula to know when time is a little more...stressful. ... but you do not chase warships in a WW2 submarine prior to Type XXI. Either it runs over you by chance, you get in front of it on the surface running diesels at flank, or you just don't. Wolf always submerges way to early and chases on batteries way to much ... only works in the SH series, not IRL. Plus the intercept course calculation is really really poor ...

a few tips for silent hunter 4, periscope is not adjustable but this can be fixed (sorta) by slightly adjusting the depth manually. for fighting aircraft, invest in the double 20mm and always use HE for it, now in that topic if you see larger aircraft with 2 engines or more, Dive. you will most likely not make it, otherwise take your chances on aircraft such as zeros. when setting long courses, set a rough course and then zoom in quite a lot on your course and adjust it to avoid shallows and small islands you can't see otherwise. when doing manual tdc and trying to use the AI speed do range and angle all the time, even if you are satisfied with them already, this will for some reason make speed a lot more accurate, but i think you will not need this since you do it on your own. When running on the surface when around places with aircraft, have AA manned but do not have them on fire at will, have the setting "engage closing targets" which in simpler terms means they won't engage aircraft unless the aircraft is showing aggression. when running on the surface in choppy waves or using the deck gun, have the boat go another feet or three down, this will make the screws stay in the water (more) and increase your speed, when using the deck gun this can also help steady the boat to help with aim. I love your series alot! since i have commented suggestions a lot on your other series i think you might remember me. But just have fun with silent hunter 4, she is a gem. Edit: added another tip. Edit 2: added another tip.

@@Cybernaut76I wonder what carrier it is. By now Admiral Yamaguchi and his Fleet would be heading towards Midway and that's an isolated carrier so it could be any Carrier of the IJN
@Cybernaut76
@Cybernaut76 7 ай бұрын
@@Nachtfalke-NSKR Basically, it could be any Japanese aircraft carrier except Akagi, Kaga, Soryu or Hiryu (because those would not come individually but all at once). Those four carriers were heading for Midway in the same group. I also think that while those four carriers headed for Midway, Shokaku and Zuikaku did not join them but turned southwards instead. So you can count out any of those carriers I named in this message.
@Cybernaut76
@Cybernaut76 7 ай бұрын
@@Nachtfalke-NSKR Also....if I am correct, at least basic Silent Hunter IV does not give you a chance to meet any named known enemy ships. It just randomly spawns enemy vessels in waters the game engine determines as hostile at certain dates and phases of war with random type and random tonnage for you to try and add to your list of enemy ships you have sunk. You can never say you sank Yamato or Musashi. You can only say you sank a Yamato class battleship. This mod probably does not change such state of affairs.

There is a faster way of judging speed. If you divide the length of the ship by the time it takes to pass a point on the reticule, it should give you an accurate speed. Try the Torpedovorhaltrechner project if you want more info on these methods. It's how I've done my SH3 campaign so far using only manual solutions. To be fair, I don't really worry about range when it comes to torps. If you have to stretch maximum range then your accuracy must be bang on in the first place. If not, it means either missing or using a salvo spread shot and hoping for a hit. Trouble is, my type VII only has about 14 torps on it and I don't like wasting them. I used to envy the amount of work in the interiors in SH4. But since getting the interior mod for SH3, it's almost as good now, I can now eat at the mess table :D.

Fun Fact about US subs in WW2 In World War II, the United States Navy used submarines heavily. Overall, 263 US submarines undertook war patrols, claiming 1,392 ships and 5,583,400 tons during the war. Submarines in the United States Navy were responsible for sinking 540,192 tons or 30% of the Japanese navy and 4,779,902 tons of shipping, or 54.6% of all Japanese shipping in the Pacific Theater. Submarines were responsible for laying 18,553 mines. At the beginning of the war, Japanese merchant ships had a carrying capacity of around six million tons. By the end of the war, in August 1945, the capacity was two million, with only 320,000 in condition to carry cargo.

As awesome as this was, this was pretty much the most intense moment in the North Pacific, historically. The only time that any carriers would venture there, and the only time a major military force would attack there. It would have been really cool to see what you and your S-Boat could have done in the South or Central Pacific in the first half of 1942, using more reliable torpedoes than the fleet boats and being a lot more aggressive in general.

I'm sure I'm asking too much from and old game, but if the sub was within range to see the carrier over the horizon, wouldn't the carrier's CAP have easily spotted the sub? I'd have expected the game would make a carrier's spotting range considerably longer than a sub's to simulate that. Or maybe combat air patrol operated at a much further distance from the carrier than I realize, and they would have been 50 miles away or something.
