I wonder if Siskel and Ebert ever saw this segment and if so, what their reaction's were.

Then _Silent Night, Deadly Night 2_ came-out 3 years later (1987), and became one of the most meme-worthy films ever. 🤭

I absolutely LOVE this movie! The poster hangs next to my Christmas tree every year and has for the past 15 years. I was 4 when it was released, though, and I know if I came across the commercial when I was younger it would have terrified me and my parents would have to deal with it

It’s a great movie. Those critics were just hating on it because they hated slasher films in general and were sick of them. This movie has more on its mind than typical slashers from that era.

@@Johnlindsey289 I love silent 🌃 night, deadly night! Along with Christmas evil, and black 🎄 Christmas! I think those are the best 3 horror/ Christmas movies ever! My local, little, independent , cinema that only holds 26 seats, is just down the street, and showing all 3 of them this December! Silent night, is playing tomorrow, I'm going, never seen it on the big screen!

Interesting considering Roger Ebert gave 3.5 out of 4 stars to "Last House on the Left" which was about the kidnap, rape, torture and murder of two teenage girls by 3 men and a woman. That movie had a scene where a man was castrated by a woman's teeth.

@@RocStarr913 And that means nothing. The problem with critics is that they don't know what the audience wants, they only assume what the audience wants, and they care about what they want.. Critics assume audiences want high quality entertainment such as best sound and best acting instead of wholesome and pure entertainment, and there are people who want the latter.

Silent Night deadly night is just a typical, early 1980s slasher, no worse than any of the others. In fact, I found Friday the 13th the final chapter much more violent than this film, and they both came out the same year, 1984. The thing is, it isn’t even the first slasher film or horror film to feature a killer Santa. Tales from the Crypt from 1972 featured a segment called “And all through the house” with a killer Santa. There was also Christmas Evil in 1980. Why SNDN received all the negative backlash and the other ones didn’t, I don’t really know.

Because the TV commercials from the original 1984 Tri-Star release aired during times where children and otherwise lots of other more easily offended people were likely able to see them.

I thought it was very well done. He was sort of like a silly Batman villain: he sees his family killed and the nuns further push the fear of "naughty" into him and of Santa even more. When he wears the suit he snaps. They could have just had him in a Santa suit killing for no reason but I'd say they gave him a great-though dark-origin. But then again killers rarely come from happy lives. There is usually always something that pushed them
