Is racism a thing of the past or is it still with us, something many people try to will away and out of sight? Barbara Trepagnier, sociology professor at Texas State University-San Marcos, discusses the subtleties of prejudice in her book Silent Racism: How Well-Meaning White People Perpetuate the Racial Divide. Karen Saupe hosts.

It's not a matter of not being able to be proud of having Black friends. Having Black friends do not give you the privilege to speak negative about Black people without being challenged by Black people.

This was posted in 2012 - I think... But the discussion is perpetually relevant. I agree w/ Barbara Trepagnier to a degree. We can not legislate our way out of racism, but we need legislation to equalize the playing field now, while we continue to work w/ individuals to address their racist tendencies. We need to do both... Wean people away from racism at the individual level, but create legislation to equalize the playing field at the institutional and National level

I think it's mostly about the upbringing. It's mostly stereotypes by the parents, so the white child is no longer doing trials & errors as a part of growth & learn, but just following the "program". Mostly they are programmed to be fearful.

But if the Asian have high awareness, like me, I am hated for no reason. I am highly empathetic person. I understand "suppressed dislike", but nobody wants to admit it.

Amen. Well stated! That's PRECISELY what's going on! 🎯❗️👍🏾👍🏾 I'm highly emphatic too...and so sick of these power hungry and insecure freaks of HATEture! They cause SO MANY problems for others. Dealing with them is utterly exhausting! We (conscientious, no-nonsense, non-whites) are hated for being high caliber and REAL. We are ENVIED. They feel inferior to us, so they try to subjugate, bully and call us uppity, or, in the work place, try to write us up for "insubordination." They can write us up all they want because I/we aren't "sub" to anyone. If you call them out on their condescending attitudes/behaviors (when they try to talk down to you or at you), they lose their s#!+. Dr. Carol Anderson calls it white rage (that's also the title of one of her books). Peace & Love to you, Thiery! ❤️💙🕊💙❤️ XOX!

I think that the slave trade was brutal, and also impact on our lives until Now. However, this is a social process that we are facing. I believe that anger and resentment will push us further away from the goal to achieve social equality. Also, anger will affect the effort of bringing about changes. Additionally, this anger we are all feeling now, was handed down from the very people who love and care for us. Although, it could be argued that our fore-parents learnt this behaviour subconsciously during the time of captivation. History has shown that we can’t tell people how to address us, but we can change the way we respond. We can educate ourselves and set boundaries also, Discipline ourself to identify with the thing we can change, through collaboration with others. Being Anger can lead to self destruction and exclusion. If we become an outcast then it will be difficult to play an active part in the equality we are seeking.

Okay, let’s say she panels a group of Black women? What would you get out of it? What type of power does that supposed panel of black women have? Black people have no economic power, no political, judicial power...we don’t even own our own communities thanks to the legacy of redlining. So if it were found that every black woman is racist what effect would it have on society?
@tinmanx2222

@@calikeisha365 What I got out of the video was that you should try to "interrupt racism" by calling out someone who is making a racist remark or having a racist conversation. She is trying to make a change on a person to person level. I think the discussion was more about personal power to affect racism. It's a personal thing not about economic , political, or judicial power. This should go for both black and white. Also as the ladies said everybody has a little racism. I thought it only fair that blacks have a chance to speak up in panel.

In a college assembly in the 70’s a female, who I assume was a student, kept repeating “I’ll give $5 to Detroit.....” while the speaker was attempting to conduct the lecture. I finally, as a resident of Detroit, yelled at her to STFU! This was not funny nor productive, and only made her look like a clown as she knows nothing about Detroit because she has probably never been there. Detroit had always been a diverse community up to that point, with whites, blacks, hispanics, mixed together and doing that quite well.

There is much more to life than racism. Just as the Marxists grossly over generalize about 'economic oppression', these people, using a Marxist base of Horkheimer, Marcuse, Foucault and Dederra, say that everything revolves around racism. There is a total disregard for fact. There are now 30% of African Americans now in the Middle class. 60 years ago there were 10%. Things improve slowly in the world. All this whining about racism is pathetic. Come to Indonesia and see how they treat us Chinese. All these whining progressives have no idea what real racism is. The Indonesians hate us for our race and our success and for not being Muslim. They call us 'kafirs' just like people use the "N" word here; actually worse. I have seen much 'bad blood' between Hispanics and Blacks. Many despise one another. I hear Hispanics calling them lazy. I hear Blacks telling Hispanics to go back to Mexico. I've been treated bad by African Americans, they often look at me with disdain. But not all. At least the Whites respect our Asian professionalism and hard work. Many African Americans don't respect hard work. Many have NO interest in education to improve their lives. They have all these Critical Race Theorists lying to them telling all their problems come from racism. That is one of the big lies. Everyone must change in this country. Asians come to this country to have a better life. Look at us. We do that. Black people can too. At least 30% of them succeed in this country. Small towns can be somewhat undesirable. No one cheats me or back stabs me like the Indonesians did back home. At least if the police stop me, I don't have to bring out my wallet to bribe them to go away. You Progressives don't even know what real corruption is. Have you every noticed how Black Africans succeed in this country, much better than most African Americans? Why? They never stop working on their goals. They value family. They have experienced Dire, crushing poverty and want a new life. I have talked to many of them. They see the opportunities in the country and work hard. Racism doesn't stop them or us Asians. We respect each other because will not stop working until we have accomplished our big goal: a better life. Asians and Black Africans prove the CRT is nonsense. We don't let Racism hold us back. I'm so glad to be out of Indonesia. I will live with racism in a white neighborhood that doesn't have crime. The whites know that we Asians don't break the law and are not rowdy. Some tell us they like the smell of our Chinese food cooking but the Indian food smells strange. I laugh. I like to eat the Indian food.
