The current US political landscape has become increasingly hospitable and encouraging for racist, anti-immigrant, and white supremacist thinking, policy, and political and legal appointments. But is this moment a dramatic break from racial politics over the past forty years-as many suggest-or could the liberal politics of “colorblindness” have helped usher it in? In this lecture, director of Brown University’s Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, Tricia Rose, discusses the resurgence of white supremacist trends in the Trump era and what they mean for American society and political life in the near future.

I learned a great deal from this lecture, but the thing that stuck with me and figurativley speaking, dropped my jaw was her analasys of "color blindness'" and the fact that race, the rule of law, in fact society itself, are social constructs that are basically self serving. Tricia Rose has her finger on it!

Here is what I was dealing with at a Rape Crisis Center where we were trained not to "mention" race. I was dealing with a Black woman caller who was being threatened with rape and refused assistance by the police, who had said, "When you get raped, let us know." My colleagues did not believe the police would behave this way (Massachusetts, 1998) and when I finally got fed up and blurted out the forbidden words, "She's Black", they called me a Racist and fired me on the spot. My black friend laughed when I told him.

This is just one example of a scholar discussing issues of race but she discusses the issue of Obama really well. And this highlights a difference between liberal scholars and liberal media. Liberal media as well as liberal celebrities glorified Obama but he really wasn't strongly involved in racial issues. He mightve realized he'd receive backlash from whites if he took more of a stand for black people but whites still gave a backlash which led to trump as president. Liberal media often highlights the social media police and too many liberals probably wouldnt like criticism of Obama but he couldve been more outspoken on some issues.

Great lecture and discussion, definitely a hard topic to cover in complete, so many aspects of discrimination, both economic and race, but this was a good start, especially with the current climate, if Trump did anything, he revealed the undercurrent of discontent across the spectrum of people, as someone who’ve never really fitted in, an outcast growing up, I’ve been aware of all the issues being discussed here because of my associations growing up upper middle class, military, and married life to a Hispanic, and a daughter married to a black, and biracial grandchildren which has enabled me to look at these issues with a certain amount of clarity, which has put into a category of someone who doesn’t fit into any category being discussed here, but I’ve enjoyed this very much, best of luck Tricia, thank you!! peace!!

Trump publicly asking Russia to 'find' the e 30,000 emails? His ENTIRE campaign lying about over 140 contacts between his campaign and Russians and their operatives? Demanding recounts and court challenges by Dems in 2016 would likely have been very productive. White supremacy used to be a term used to represent groups of white people who believed in racial superiority, wanted to segregate blacks from white, create white a ethno-state, and possibly even commit genocide, now we are told white supremacy is every person, any group of white people, especially if they are in a position of privilege, doesn't matter how they got there, it's white supremacy and needs to be changed, even if that means politically forcing them out, creating diversity quotas, etc. etc. You really can't make this stuff, the world is literally going crazy and there is very good chance this will manifest in something very violent, and possibly climactic.
@garretttobin7451

@D Gh Can you not understand what I wrote? My post was quite obviously trying to describe how many groups on the new politically correct left are trying to re-define white supremacy as something that is present every where in the western world and any other predominantly white countries, groups like BLM and other SJW organizations are trying to label literally anything that is Caucasian as white supremacist, this is about re-defining a white institutions, culture, society which are still the freest and most egalitarian in the world as white supremacy, in many cases this equates to a literal attack on the western world itself. If you don't have the intelligence to see the distinction I drew in my first comment then you really shouldn't have commented.

@@garretttobin7451 I agree with you...but have viewed the western world as fundamentally white supremacist for years now. Yes we are “free” but white Europeans colonized the world by consistently saying that the ways of brown people on their lands that they had inhabited for generations were incorrect and savage...it was the job of the white European saviors to correct their lifestyle and bring them into good civilization...aka the white way. From my understanding, the entirety of the “west” was founded on the idea that the way of life that white Europeans found to be the best was the best and had to be the best for everyone else in the whole wide world. While I feel bad for whites in positions that they worked hard for in today’s society, I can’t help but wonder where the nation would be and what the higher spaces in America would look like if reconstruction had been allowed to work and the idea of white supremacy hadn’t been legally allowed to persist in many ways for the next 100 years.

So to all of you good people who are still swallowing this academic garbage and think that over 70 million - practically half of the country are deplorable people, consider the following. Countless of black, latino, LGBT cannot be dismissed as self hating traitors when in their mind they are not voting -supporting the far right. You might say that all those ppl. are misinformed. It is plausible (although highly unlikely) to miss all the info. from The media. In the real America it means ignore black people as if they do not exist and hopefully their problems won't become your problems. Some quick clarifications about Tricia Rose's position: She grew up biracial in Harlem & the Bronx. Black Noise came out in 1994 and was about Hip Hop from the 70's & 80's. The title Black Noise is not *her* disparaging rap music, but it's her appropriation of the word "noise" by those in power who hated & felt threatened by hip hop in the 80's & 90's (& even today), who insult rap music by saying it's not music, but merely "noise".
