Bruce Dern was terrific in this as were the practical effects. I enjoyed the movie for its high mindedness but agree it’s not an action flick. Any serious sci-fi cinephile must see this one at least once. I also recommend watching the supplemental features as their are some intriguing backstories.

Yes I appreciate the movie for what it is but I just found myself looking at the time and being bored but definitely a well made film

Right on. I was a little surprised you guys even reviewed this one. Didn't think it would be your cup of tea. I just got/watched the new Arrow restoration myself last night, and I thought it looked really good for a film of this age. They did a great job with it. I actually hadn't seen the film myself since I was a kid in the 70s, but I still remembered much of it quite well. It is kind of a downer and a slow burn, so it's not for everyone. But I do like the film. It's not the kind of film I can watch very often, but I'm glad I own it -- not only for the personal nostalgic connection (it was an early introduction to sci-fi for me, which became one of my favorite genres), but also just because I feel it's a culturally-significant film. It's got a few layers to it and is rich with subtext -- especially about the importance of human connection. So I appreciate it for that.

Matt did the review for this one and I kind of wish I did because this was probably more of my taste then Matts. Your absolutely right thought the big thing that movie was trying to tell us was human connection and caring for the earth. Something I think enspired Wall E actually was this film. I think Sci Fi was just very different before the 80s. The only thing I wish Sci fi films would take away from a film like this is the use of Practical effects. There’s real beauty in that. -John.

@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia I totally agree. Practical effects rule! I don't even mind that they're dated... I'd rather have dated practical effects than a bunch of sterile CGI (although I do respect what can be accomplished with CGI. I'm just more into practical effects these days -- especially on 4K, where you can actually see so much more detail in the work). But yeah, Star Wars changed everything for sci-fi. Lucus pretty much set the standard for everything that would come after in the genre.

Yepe after Star Wars they were just trying to keep up with that style of story telling. And your right Practical effects even when their bad still have a charm to them knowing that their real. For the most part Practical effects age better then CGI. Cgi becomes dated fast, except maybe now where CGI is looking more life like but CGI form 10 years ago is very outdated but Practical effects form 50 years can still look good.

Gordon Matt and I have very different taste in film. We’re going to talk about that in this weeks lets talk physical media. Matt doesn’t recall y get emotionally attached to movies, I on the other hand want a movie to make me emotional and find those to be better movies then any mindless action movies. So I agree with you Gordon lol. -John

There really is that before star wars and after star wars sci fi in films change. before Star Wars Sci Fi was more plotting and less reliant on action to be involved and the pacing was just so much more slowed down.
