Salmon Fishing the South Fork of the Salmon River.
Part 2 of 3. Scott, Dustin and his eleven year old son Cole are back after some hard fighting salmon on the South Fork of the Salmon in late June, 2016. In the first half of the video. Scott will be showing you how we tie up our rigs and what we use for bait. From hook size, line weight to yarn colors and how much yarn we like to use. Then you will see a short snippet of some crazy rafters dodging boulders in the wild South Fork and then back to the salmon action!! You'll see some really nice native salmon caught and released by some of the other fishermen on the river. Then you'll see Dustin's eleven year old son hook into his very first South Fork salmon and the agony of losing that fish to some sweet redemption on landing and releasing his first native salmon EVER! Then Scott closes it out with a nice 39 inch hatchery keeper that takes him down river.

Hey make sure you lick or wet down your knots! Dry knots = more friction when you dress them = weak knot. Good vid!

I like the surgical tubing idea. We usually just use slinky weights but I may try this.

Seems like it doesn’t get snagged as much. Plus, if your hole hoping, it’s easy to change size on your pencil lead. Works good for us anyway

I’ll bet that was a bumpy ride.. That log jam just up river is pretty cool! Would love to put a camera on a salmon and see how the heck they traverse that thing.

Many thanks for the nice explanation of your rig. I followed your instructions and worked up some nice ones. It was my first time salmon fishing, which was on the Southfork of the Salmon near where I live in Yellow Pine. It was the last day of the season, so, I did not have much time to figure out what was doing wrong. Every time I tossed the rig into the water it went into the rocks, and that was it. I only caught rocks all day. Could you please share some tips on how to fish the rig without losing it instantly? Nice work on all your videos. GMH

Thank you! Hope you got my email on a couple good tips? Finding that perfect amount of pencil lead is key, too much and you'll get hung up, not enough and you wont get a good drift into that zone where the fish lay. Recognizing good seams and one with out too many snags is an art form. That river gets a ton of clutter in a short amount of time in it with so many fishermen. Balls of line in popular spots just waiting for the next victim. There's miles of river to discover, change it up if you're losing too much gear in a spot. Good luck this year!!

For those locations you are hiking into, how do you keep the fish fresh for the ones you decide to keep? Carrying an ice chest down long hiking trails would appear to be a royal pain.

It’s impossible to bring in a cooler into the canyon, it’s steep! We hike our fish out to the truck each day and put them on ice. And you need to hike fast, because it gets pretty warm there as well. I’ve never lost one though. Or, do like I did this year, smoke it bushcraft style on the river! It was amazing!!

Try a rubber net for so many endangered fish, less handling.. Nice job, though.

What size weight do you use for your sinker and do you have a link to purchase some? My first season fishing for salmon and there is so much to learn your video is a big help.
@SilhouetteOutdoors
@SilhouetteOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
You’re weight will vary greatly, depending on where you’re trying to fish. Hence the reason we use rolls of pencil lead. You can cut it off to any length you want, and the goal is to use just enough so that your rig just bounces bottom without getting stuck. I didn’t realize I didn’t have hyper links for the weights and surgical tubing. I’ll fix that tonight. Good luck this year!!
@SilhouetteOutdoors

Should be all the correct hyper links for all the gear I used now. Thanks for watching!

No it is not it is bottom bouncing and they are hooked in the mouth and you can only keep hatchery fish so whats the big deal?
@SilhouetteOutdoors
@SilhouetteOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
@@magwamagwa45110 I will agree that likely many are flossed. But, I have caught many the first couple casts of the day after feeling a hit. I also use scent that I do believe makes a difference. When you throw green for 2 hours straight with out a bite and change to orange and catch 3 fish in 20 minutes out of the same drift. I'm with you, it's hard to argue that color doesn't matter. Good luck this year!!

SuperHansen80 I don’t get after them much in the fall. Once hunting season hits, the poles get put away for the most part. Once in awhile I’ll do a cast and blast. Steelhead and chukar hunt in Hells Canyon. Good luck on the Little River!

Many guys tell me the same thing. Then a big fish snaps their line and I say, haven’t had mine busted in 3 years. It’s one thing to lose a fish because it spits the hook, that’s just fishing. But there’s no excuse when you lose a fish because your equipment fails. Since I went from 30 to 40, I have never been broken off on the South Fork or Little Salmon, including this season with high water.
