DW Phillips is a documentary filmmaker and constitutional attorney with Ukraine Story, a nonprofit foundation for journalism and documentary reporting in Ukraine. He and his documentary team have been filming conducting interviews in Ukraine with victims of Russian atrocities, and reporting stories of courage, defiance and perseverance of the Ukrainian people. He has reported on Russian atrocities in Bucha, and is presently working on issues of Kremlin disinformation campaigns in the American Right, religious liberty in Ukraine and the KGB domination of the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orrhodox Church.

When a politician concentrates merely on winning instead of winning policy they heavily rely on entertainers (personalities) to garner support. As far as institutions themselves, when presidents put industry insiders to sit on the boards that are supposed to hold industries accountable people start to mistrust. I’m not sure politicians have the self examination capabilities to notice this as a problem for adding credibility to institutions.

I began my career as a Soviet analyst be left that to become an Evangelical pastor who now works vigorously combatting the growth of Christian Nationalism in the US. This heresy has been developed by *Agitprop* from the right-wing, which ignores Christ’s insistence that His Kingdom is not of this world and not to be conflated with nation-Christians are to “love their neighbors” and “preach the gospel to every nation.” The Church was multi-ethnic from the beginning. But the Russian Orthodox Church conflates Church and State, baptizing infants into a national identity, with colonial attitudes that posit Moscow as the “Third Rome.” Putin controls Russian Orthodox leadership as surely as the KGB did for decades, but uses this Christian Nationalism in his psychological warfare against the West. Theologically it is untenable, but among those who lack discernment that comes from proper teaching, it is a very seductive notion to change the state instead of the individual. What is worse is the infusion of race into this equation, producing “White Christian Nationalism” that seeks to expel those who “do not belong.” Putin takes an opposite approach toward Ukraine, denying their unique nation seeking to reabsorb it into his neo-imperial project.

We need to stop saying "whether Ukraine gets $60 billion." If the bill passes, $60 billion will change hands, but far less than that goes to Ukraine. A combination of old weapons systems and direct aid goes to Ukraine, but a large fraction of that money is spent in the US thereby creating jobs, updating our own weapons, and generally doing really good things for the US. And it also, of course, helps Ukraine when they are desperate for help.

Very well said! One of my greatest recent disappointments was hearing Neil Oliver repeating Kremlin falsehoods and talking points. Jake Broe refers to the Kremlin mouthpiece as "Marjorie Traitor Green" which I found rather witty. Jesting aside, I find it incredibly saddening to see how low the US, once a proud bastion of freedom and rights, has sunk. The problems we have in the USA seem to get worse but I have hope that the Ukraine aid bill will be passed. However, by the time it passes, it should be doubled. It seems as though a huge swathe of the population has Adult ODD. It pains me to no end that the delays in Congress have occurred and lives have been lost as a result. The longer it takes, the more homes are destroyed and infrastructure is ruined and the more it will cost to rebuild when Ukraine prevails.

05:40 there are over 1,500 right-leaning radio stations throughout the US (primarily serving rural areas). If you count the number of progressive or left-leaning ones, you might only count 50. People like Lauren Boboert can always rely on these media channels to get their message out before they even open their mouth in front of people at a small town hall meeting. Rural America has a tremendous amount of power in this sense - which initially (late 1700s thru the 1900s) wasn't a bad thing (preventing a tyranny of the majority in large cities) - but since the Fairness Doctrine was liquidated in the 80's, media outlets can focus strictly on one-sided politics without any pushback from counter-narratives on the left ever being considered. As a result, the rural population often votes against their own self-interests (farm subsidies for one) because they get caught up in Identity Rage Politics over anything else. Hope that helps.

Thank you for this enlightening interview which dissects an example of how Russian propaganda targets foreign audiences, in this case U.S. voters. The war in Ukraine, its background and consequences may seem far away and quite abstract to average Americans, but the topic of religious freedom is obviously something that voters of the religious right can relate to. Even if the defamatory claim that orthodox priests are executed in Ukraine, spread by Marjorie Taylor Greene, is only believed by a small minority, it still creates doubt in a wider audience (as the Romans said, "something always sticks"). People might think: "Well, Marjorie Taylor Greene probably exaggerated, but there might be some truth to the claim that religious freedom is suppressed in Ukraine. This is not good, why should the U.S. support a country that disrespects such a fundamental right?" This fits with Putin's depiction of Russia as a defender of traditional values, in contrast to a corrupt Ukraine - the distorted narrative that is presented to a public with a preference for simple views in pre-election times.

The curious thing for me is the disconnect of pro Russian Americans to what they think is a positive of what that will bring to the the USA. They never get past their Russian propaganda ramblings to explain why they think this is good.
