This is a good video on Silkies. When I got mine there was not many “informational” videos on them. They do require different care and consideration then the standard chickens. Especially regarding ineffective cold tolerance. I am sure many of these poor little feather babies freeze to death because of owners ignorance and lack of research on the breed. Great job! Melanie & Melvin (my lil sweeties). thank you. I have noticed mine are more sing-song in their sounds. Especially my rooster, I swear sometimes he is singing lol. Have you noticed that?

Loved this video! A few questions: 1.) I have a silkie (she’s black and super fluffy, her name is Florence and she’s my lil baby) that is about 5-6 months old. We have another hen of a different breed (she’s a silver duck wing, and there’s also a rooster with her) that’s about the same age. I found the first egg a couple days ago and I found another one today. How do I tell which one is laying if I didn’t see it happen? (They live in the same coop) 2.) What temperature is too low for silkies and what heat source should I use?
@carolineshomestead25603 жыл бұрын
It’s really hard to tell, which one is laying if you don’t catch them in the act. Usually the one laying is going to be more vocal, perhaps you caught one doing the egg song or pacing more than usual? So anything below zero you might want to keep checking on them.

@carolineshomestead25603 жыл бұрын
As long as they are raised together, it should be okay. You might want to have a Silkie rooster and the other breeds standard size because a standard size rooster will try and mount the Silkie too and it might be too big and hurt the little Silkie hen, especially because you are only having 5 chickens since the ideal combo is 1 rooster to 10 hens.

@carolineshomestead25603 жыл бұрын
Silkies are very fragile. The good thing about getting them young is that they imprint on you. However, they are more susceptible to certain changes in temps because they are bantams. Just make sure the temperature is at 95 degrees and put electrolytes in their water. You are a little late in getting them this time of year unless you live in a hot climate so I would wait till spring so you can put them out once their feathers come in and it will be nicer weather.

Word of caution to silkie owners! Look for leg mites as the features on their feet makes it hard to spot the nasty things they can your silkies to become lame. Also if not treated the chicken will lose toes. I know from experience the mites are hard to get rid of and will cause a tremendous amount of work to get rid of. You can’t see the mites with the naked eye you only see the scale’s the mites cause.

They can live with different breeds of bantams. Th he can be out in the rain but their feathers don’t repel water very well so they will be a soaked mop. Best to have a roof over their heads and an enclosed run or somewhere where they can go to get out of the elements. You can train them just like any other chicken. It’s better to get them in pairs since they are social creatures. I would think that they could get along if you work with them and raise from chick.

Cats are predators and chickens are prey. Might not be a good combination if they weren’t raised together. Usually cats don’t go after full size chickens but because they are bantams, you might have a problem.

Yes. You have to be careful introducing them to standard size chickens. They can kill them with a peck to the head. I have my Silkies in a separate coop from my Leghorns and Sex links. You should do it slowly, putting the new Silkies in a dog cage or separated so they can see each other for a couple weeks.

People do it but you are putting the Silkies at a physical risk due to their bantam size and the thin skulls they have when a hen pecks them on the head. It could cause brain damage or death. As far as the roosters, usually two grown roosters will not get a long unless brought up together.

Yeah I can see your knowledge is very good let's try for you to let us all know what can hurt your flock or your animals outside correct your cats can do it but most likely it's going to be you or me which put heat lamp in the warm up the little bird well heat lamp one bird jumped up on the heat lamp pushed it down on the other bird and fried it so it's like Happy garden bad mistakes there's there's no good mistake don't ever make mistakes always water water clean water have hot water have disinfectant clean their bowls when they eat two weeks worth of time clean out their their feeding I got the step on it opens up foods right there and they get away it closes water water these birds will not do good if you give them no water if you forget and their Waters out oh my God they're jumping around trying to tell you they jump in front of you trying to tell you what they want let's look at what the birds want that's that's what I look at my birds are roaming free on a half an acre I don't have the boys mixed with the girls but the boys have portion and the girls have all the rest so yeah if I don't want the girls to eat my pot plant no I put a thing around it and all the other stuff they eat it all tomatoes you name it they eat everything to where as far as they can jump up two and a half feet and they eat everything they eat and they clean up everything they eat all the bad bugs you name it lettuce they love lettuce so do not let him get in the garden with the lettuce you have a great site let's look at water and food always any mistake as a bad mistake for me it has been so I learned to focus on I got a boy that has an eye missing so I learned to deal with him and he runs into things looking the other way so it's like going to learn I instead of having walking around I pick them up and talk to him and we walk I don't know what they say about one eye is close and one eye is far but this one is running into stuff real close so I think he's nearsighted great video and thank you for entering and letting me enter into your life and yeah you you put a dot on my life that was cool my boys silkies I have one which is the original mellow but if you turn your back he will come and run after you and slice you open get me wrong all the boys after this daddy are bad boys all the girls from this daddy they're the best keep up the good work and tractor supply I do the same I don't buy birds from there but yeah I have a bird here's a trick have a bird that kind of disease and almost died looked at me like she wanted to live , we made a sling slit two holes the back feet go down in the holes the the thing that she sits on is like a the size of a handkerchief handkerchief but we stitched all this stuff together and made it real thick so that should be sitting in like this hammock so we have budgies on the back budgies on the other back bungees on the front bungees on the front so it holds her up in side cardboard box there and then I have a budget that goes across that holds a big old fat towel that keeps her warm she's been alive for two and a half years she's a beautiful bird gummy bear that's her name and I just found her out side laying on her side in the dirt trying to walk and just flop and back and forth and and just got it just got worse but she's alive she eats you have to mix up everything and make it mushy you can't give it to dry and the wet I don't know why she can't figure out the wet put your head up she don't know that I don't know that why I don't know but she's still alive she's in a cage you know and she's actually in my house in my living room sitting in the bay window watching all the other birds. Everyday thank you for your time drink water Rock on
