Today we're in the penultimate Barnsley parish, and this one's perhaps the most tourist-y of the lot so far. There's so much to say about this place, I already know before the video is even viewed by anyone that this one's missing some things. It's not fantastically large, but what it is, is crammed full of things to see and indeed, do.
Located on the Western edge of Barnsley's unparished area, and to the West of the M1, this is the first place you'd come to if you were heading out of South Yorkshire and into Greater Manchester via the Peak District. The foothills of the Pennines are not fully pronounced here as they are further West, which means this is relatively flat, certainly flatter than the likes of Oxspring, Dunford and Langsett.
Here you'll find a stream that's a putrid looking orange colour, polluted with iron oxide that runs from the hills and finds it's way into the water. Personally I think the ochre or "okker" as the locals call it, looks rather unique. The stream runs down the side of something called Pot House Hamlett, by far the biggest tourist attraction in the parish. It's not the only one though. There are two pubs, one with a really good menu according to their website, and a 200 year old trail that was used to transport coal via horse drawn wagons.
Moving South, there's a secondary village, home to a train station, and an extremely low tunnel that the vertically challenged amongst us would all manage to walk under, but everybody else will need to duck. Speaking of tunnels, that trail I mentioned used to have a tunnel which has been built over.
There's plenty more to see in this video and plenty more I haven't covered, but this is my bash at the parish of SILKSTONE.
