Sills Argo Briggs Vanguard carburetor pilot jet service

Here's a quick video we did to show how to clean the pilot jet on a Briggs vanguard engine. The Argo we used on this video is a brand new 2019 Frontier 600. This engine has been used by Argo for many years in different models. Although there has been some changes to the carburetors over the years, all Vanguard twins are very similar. This video shows the removal and cleaning of the pilot jet. Some carbs may require further cleaning and disassembly.

Thank you! A customer brought me a generator that had sat for a year and ran like crap. Looks like to get the carb off you have to remove a lot of crap including the intake. I had already figured out how to get the top of the carb off and take the needle and float out. Used carb cleaner to clean it out nice and clean but it still ran like crap. After watching your video I pulled that jet/emulsion tube out and cleaned it AND blew out the port it screws into. Engine runs perfectly now. Thanks!!!

My 303447 16 hp gen. wasn't running so great because of the carb. Didn't know it was so easy to pull the top off so I ended up getting it running like new using Sea Foam. It made a huge difference when I shut it off for about 6 hrs. giving the Sea Foam time to loosen the varnish, sludge, whatever. Great & helpful video.

Thank you very much. I learned from other videos that the pilot jet was the most likely culprit, but couldn't find it on this engine. I was only 4 screws away, and you helped me get it fixed. I used a welding torch tip cleaner, (next to the smallest) some carb cleaner, and air. Purrs like a kitten again. YAY!

I have a nikki 6100 on my 1991 bcs tractor. It would start easily and idle well, but when I put load on it the engine would die. I let it sit for a minute and it started up but then died under load. Pulled the carb off and found gel in the float bowl. I believe that the gel would block the main jet and starve the engine. So I cleaned out the carb and the blocked pilot jet. Now that 33 year old bcs with a 12.5 hp vanguard v twin runs like new.

Thanks for posting this video. Have basically the same engine and carb on my Ingersoll 4016 tractor. Started surging the other day and the choke seems to calm it down. Will give this a shot. ;)

TheBGravit--I realize your post was two years ago, but thought I might reply. I also have an Ingersoll 4016. Suddenly, engine will only run on full choke. Not good. Changed fuel filter, now need to get at the carb. Usually, I let more skilled folks do that work, but need to sort this out. Hopefully, cleaning out the pilot jet will do it...How is yours running?

I have this motor on a Walker mower and the filter base plate just like the one you see will flex allowing dirt to be pulled into the carb and engine. Had to clean the carb a bunch. Walker sent me a thicker base plate which stoped the problem. I would not purchase anything with a Briggs which was my inclination when I purchased the Walker initially. Lesson learned!

Excellent thank you. Another check I did was take the floats out, mop up all the fuel and spray the float bowls out with air. Mine had debris down the bottom...whether that was causing the jets to block i don't know. but good to be clean anyhow. If you don't replace the gasket check for bits of papery gasket falling away as the gasket above the floats is constantly immersed in fuel and can perish. Anyhow my Walker mower is purring now, thank you.

Thanks for your service. This video got my generator back running. Now my problem is it won’t stay running unless I have the choke on half way. I take the chock off it stalls. Leave it half way it runs. Any suggestions?

I’ve got a question for you I’ve got a vanguard 16 hp it has a gravity feed to the gas tanks on top I’ve taken apart cleaned it put it back together it runs perfect it idols spot on ribs does everything however when I shut it off and I come back the next day it’s completely flooded out. In this engine it appears that the needle which has a rubber tip it goes into the seat which is brass and non-removable and non-replaceable inside of the carburetor and that seal should stop the gas from flowing. The engine does have a manual shut off knob that you can stop the gas from flowing but I know that that is not the answer to my problem.My question is how do you adjust the float height so that that needle seats correctly into the brass base to prevent the fuel from overflowing and not shutting off.

My carb has a small metal tube on the opposite side from the fuel inlet with nothing connected to it. What might that be, and should it connect to something?

I have this exact engine on a racing mower and have some serious issues with the carburetor bogging down around certain corners. We've tried rotating the carb assembly which has helped a bit. Any more ideas that might help?

Where does the other end of the small rubber hose go?

If it's the one I think you mean, mine is clamped down, next to the fuel pump. I don't know what it does, but it's just open on that end.
