If only I had a dollar for every time someone has said to me 'those motorbikes are dangerous, you'll get seriously hurt one day. You might even get killed'. They started saying it the first time I jumped on a bike as a kid, they are especially saying it now that I'm in my fifties. Well I have been seriously hurt a few times and I'm sure the shit will hit the fan again in the future. And maybe I will die out in the forest one day. I'm sure it won't be fun but at least I'll die doing what I love. Chance are though, the joints and tendons will just get worse, riding will get harder, and maybe one day I'll just have to stop riding. But no way will I be selling my bikes, they will be like trophies sitting in the garage. Or maybe even hanging on the wall if I can convince my better half that they'll make good wall art. And much more than just the riding. I mean the riding is great, whether it's play racing with your equally unskilled buddies, admiring the scenery, or just offloading a pile of stress from the working week. I've met the best people through motorbikes, and often the camaraderie is even better than the riding. So it's fine when people don't understand, even when they say it's time to grow up, sell my toys and stop taking stupid risks. And next time I break a bone and they say I told you so, I know my idiotic grin willl only get them more frustrated. There's a saying from one of those ancient Greek philosophers: Man is most nearly himself when he achieves the seriousness of a child at play. And man, I never want my inner child to die. The adventure... continues.

Yes, emotional maturity is vastly overrated and valued. Valuing others is not

Ironically it was watching my mother suffer and die from cancer at 73 that more or less removed my fear of getting killed while riding. I still understand and respect the inherent danger, but if some version of her end story awaits all of us give me a dirt or street bike until I am physically unable to use them.

Sorry to hear about your mother's suffering. Being reminded that, we too, will eventually face sickness and death is a great way get on with living.

At 69 and 4 broken ribs last year, everyone said "is she going to sell her bikes now?" and I said no I'm just going to learn to choose better lines through the ruts.

It's not about emotional maturity. It's all about making the decision to retain your childlike enjoyment and awe of things and ability to be surprised, the decision to look for the more hopeful outcomes in things. Ride on, friends ⭐

Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional. I hope to die as I lived, kinda dumbly, and screaming in pain while my friends point and laugh.

At 75, I still ride my Gasgas EC300. I truly miss my Cr500, which is stolen, and my Kx500, which customs here in Thailand seized.

Excellent When has it ever been fun to act your age etc or whatever “advice” some will give you. The better you take care of yourself the longer you get to do fun stuff. I see no reason why I won’t be riding in my 70s.

In the last video you said it had a 3 bladed prop standard. Would that be lighter, and therefore less torque on throttle applications?

@@kristiangunderson "normality" is another one of those things that doesn't actually exist. Case in point, normality changes every week. I guess there's an argument to be made about normality and conformity being the same. For me there might be some overlap but they are two very very different things.

You and anybody who questions why you ride need to read a book called Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. This book has helped me understand and relate to others why riding is a priority for me and will be until I can’t physically ride anymore. I’m 42 and hellbent on riding until I’m 80.
