One thing about sans that is really cool is that he uses his knowledge of his world against you. Dodging attacks, not giving immunity frames, and attacking out of the bullet box all while crap talking you are some examples that shows that while not overwhelmingly powerful due to his low stats he can still be a threat.

Being the most famous character from one of the most famous games in history, and also being famous for being difficult, it's no surprise he has a reputation as one of the "hardest bosses ever", even if that reputation isn't entirely deserved.

i'd say he somehow stopped chara from resetting, since they also have a dt soul. maybe when he got ill with the buttercups, chara wanted to reset to fix it, but was convinced by asgore not to because he didn't want to forget them. that's me speculating though.

Part of the beauty of dangerous comic relief is that you rarely think of them as a threat. Nobody started the Sans fight blind expecting to get their sh*t kicked in by the first attack. It's completely unexpected, making them so much more dangerous. Also, pointing out how Sans manipulates you is actually genius, I'm surprised I never thought of that before. Another thing with Mirage, growing up in the Titan Fall Universe, his 3 other brothers all went off to war and died. This obviously took a big toll on both of them. And Mirages mother, slowly began to mistake Elliott for her other sons too. I think his backstory along with his personality is why he's one of my favorite characters from the game with only tragic backstory characters.

That's not exactly true. You have it right. His brothers did fight in the war, but his brothers were never *confirmed* dead. They're just listed as MIA and are presumed dead. Letting there be potential for one if not all of them to be alive. Another sad thing is that Mirage's dad is also a deadbeat, yet he still misses him. Also, apparently, Mirage has an uncle who's a pilot. Which has always been an interesting tidbit to me.

I feel like Bill Cipher might have started off a bit like this too. Not as much because everybody's told to be wary of him and take him seriously from the start, so you do eye him with suspicion from the get go, but I feel like if we compare how he's introduced to were he ends up at we can kind of see a similar arc. The characters themselves at first, despite the warnings on the journal, treat him no different than any other monster they meet, so you are inclined to do the same because sure he's supposed to be a powerful being but he's also a small, funny triangle guy with a top hat that says funny things and does silly tricks so whatever! And then like, things escalate pretty quickly, every episode he's in we see a slightly more intimidating version of him until he completely takes over.

One correction about Sans: he doesn’t die because he’s sleepy. He actually does Napstablook’s thing with saying “zzz” to manipulate Chara to attack. He dodges, but then Chara cheats and attacks again. He did get tired, but he wasn’t actually ready to stop. Also, he is still awesome.

People understand it as overwhelm powering and manipulation honestly. The attack is on multiple fronts. He uses his udnerstanding of the 'gameyness' of his reality to screw with you, even going far as to attack you in your action menu. He screws with you mentally, putting your down, revealing information, mocking your, teasing you, compeltely fucking with you. But it doesn't change, he is also overwhelmingly powerful. A weird way to think it, maybe he put all his stats from his Health into everything else. Becoming a overwhelming glass cannon. We gotta remember that this isn't the first time sans was tormenting and overpowered an immortal. Flowey is likely more powerful than most monsters in the underground. He was manipulating time as well. but he also fears sans deeply, more than he fears anything else.

The sans fight is hard and he seems strong because he was pushed to his very limit after you killed EVERYONE he loved and cared for. If you put another character (except papyrus he would never even think of killing you) in that situation they would probably be way stronger than sans because of the situation they were put in. In canon sans is just lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy, funny, etc... but a lot people in fanon represent him as one of the most powerful characters. Also flowey does not *FEAR* sans. One thing that never gets old about this play on the trope is that there's some level of misdirection. Because a lot of audiences see a goof and think low intelligence or non-threatening (and it's plausible characters in-story will think so, too.) So when their actions prove them to be cunning it really throws that perception off kilter. Which befits a manipulator type like Sans very well! In his case, he's very intentionally using the image of comic relief to his advantage, in part for this reason. Great video!

I always found Sans' power to be incredibly funny, as his main ability is most likely a karmatic-related ability, meaning that it's only so hard due to the very specific circumstances of "one small child murdered an entire species for the funny" and if you didn't decide to murder an entire species it would be easier to fight him

his very power is that he's judge, jury, & executioner and is terrifyingly good at fulfilling that role. he isn't strong but if he's punishing someone he is great at pissing them of & frustrating them till they give up or beat him after hour's of time wasted to practicing his fight. now that i think about it he isn't punishing frisk he's punishing the player and stopping them from getting the ending and getting rewarded for there curiosity for choosing to go out of there way to kill all character's for no reason except why not or to see what would happen, it can't be for just exp as once at a good level the player just could stop and you're actively going out of you're way to kill them all so the player is actively choosing the bad route. killing sans is the only satisfaction for going down the bad route (and it isn't much of a satisfactory death anyway's as he just disappears after moving of screen) as the ending doesn't seem to me (a person who has never played undertale) to be a satisfying end to the game, you just ether die and the world end's or the world just end's with you're involvement.

Something I hate about how the fandom has flanderized Sans is that people seemingly overlook that despite being lazy and seemingly being somewhat apathetic due to his knowledge, he is by no means detached or disillusioned. He deeply cares about his friends and loved ones, to the point where he’ll keep his promise to Toriel and only step in when it’s clear he has no other option. This isn’t even some deep analysis either, most of this is blatantly obvious or told to you by the game, but the fact that Undertale’s fandom is at least 75% secondaries at this point makes people just ignore that in favor of “le depressed edgy glowing eye skeleton bad time emo boy” bastardized version of Sans. Same applies to Papyrus, with people ignoring that he’s not some innocent pure oblivious dope, and that he’s clearly aware of what Sans can actually do (“IS SANS PRANKING YOU ACROSS TIME AND SPACE?”) And the evidence subtly sprinkled throughout the game that he’s far more powerful than he lets on. If anything, the idea that he’s aware of Sans’s power and potential makes his comedic overreactions to his brother’s laziness that much more hilarious and interesting.

Honorable mention: Sylvan the merchant from FTL Multiverse He's not really a "Comic Relief" character, but once you fight him, even on the easiest difficulty, you will learn what happens when you sell all of your weapons to one guy throughout your runs. Context: You can fight Sylvan, he has a lot of shields and tends to fire 6 guns in a salvo, his appearance got an entire fleet to stand down, and one of the final bosses is another version of him in an area that's just different versions of him. Also if you pick up the gnome and then go to the "Merchant" beacon, you will find an alternate version of him with more shields and bigger guns, and you can't actually fight him. There's also a "Sansvan" accompanied by "Papobyn," you can guess what that's a reference to.

Another character who at least subverted my expectations was Handsome Jack in Borderlands 2. He is the villain of the game from the start, but his initial interactions with the player portray him more as a childish bully. But through pivotal moments throughout the game, you begin to realise how ruthlessly evil he really is. One of my all time favourite villains!

The thing about Sans' fight though is that it is this big epic struggle where he shoots you with lasers and slams you into bone walls. It IS a struggle, for both you and him. He's trying to be as frustrating as possible. The combination of his ridiculous attacks, his menu attacks, his commentary, his reminders to you about your first couple of deaths, him killing you upon sparing him, and even his last bit of dialogue when he walks off screen is all made to make you feel sad, annoyed, and frustrated. That is the whole point of the genocide run. To make you feel generally bad. Good video.

Emet-Selch from final fantasy xiv is honestly a closer character to the internet's idea of sans than sans, and even then he's still in part a silly guy. He first shows up in a "meanwhile at villains inc" scene where he's shown to be a master manipulator while also being a funny haha man who gets shot and just goes "fair enough, however I know your IP address" and unlike every other villain in the game, when he joins the main plot proper, he just kinda shows up in front of the characters and is like "hey the other guys tried to kill you it didnt work so I'm just gonna like vibe and watch you ok byeee" and the whole shadowbringers enxpansion from then on, he's constantly showing up and either making light of the situation, or helping you, because he truly does want to see you succeed, as his motovation for his evil deeds is a belief that humanity has decayed since the ancient people he's from and he desperately wants to either bring them back, or be proven wrong.

Sans, the Manipulator who’s Actually Justified

For me, Sans feels almost unrecognizable when I watch Fan animations about him on KZbin. The internet has always portray him devastated at loss of his brother by making him cry or wearing his brother's scarf while fighting the player in the genocide route. However that's only because of how unsatisfied people feel when Sans reacts to Papyrus's death in the game. In the genocide route, Sans barely appears until the end of the game and he doesn't even specifically mention his death which everyone was expecting to hear. However what if you JUST kill papyrus. Some players curious enough or wanting a more satisfying reaction will try this unique route but Sans pretends like nothing is wrong for rest of the playthrough until you get to the Judgement Hall when out of nowhere he confronts you about his death. That is by FAR the scariest scene ever in the game. There is no music, no sound effects, just the emotionless glare of Sans just before he disappears. He will ask if you should always do the right thing, and in response with a yes or a no, he absolutely makes you feel horrible. Instead of giving you the satisfaction of him mourning the whole game he manipulates you by thinking he doesn't know what's going on only to make you feel like crap for killing his brother just out of curiosity and satisfaction. One of the scariest things about Sans is how he subverts expectations. That's one of the reasons I love his character so much. He completely had me shocked in multiple different scenarios. For me, this is just another level on how brilliant his character is and makes you recognize how much he manipulates the player. Rad Chad, thank you for this analysis video. It made me see Sans' character on an entire new level.

Agree that Sans and most characters really are portrait very badly by the fandome, but i want to make a small correction, if you try a run were you just kill Papyrus Sans will not go as if nothing had happen, he actually desapears c¿almost completly from the game until he judges you, not talking or even letting you see him whit the one exception of the syren battle were if you turn it into a concert, the text says "A hooded figure watches the commotion from afar". instread of Sans selling tickets to everyone as he would normally do.

Also I always felt WE are the ones who possessed and basically the game is , do you give control back to Frisk or give it to Chara? Theres a popular fan theory that Chara is the narrator, but I always hated that theory. It made no sense since Chara's text is always red when theyre in control. I prefer the theory that Frisk is the narrator and that is why they try to guilt you into being better person so they get the ending they want. Im not good at explaining it but I think that chara is just kinda chilling at the start. Its the players choice to do genocide or pacifist and if we show mercy and dont corrupt her then yeah. And during genocide we show Chara that murder is GOOD that it’s JUSTIFIED and she thinks such. So if we deny her offer at the end then she takes control cause thats what she was CONDITIONED to do About frisk: I dont think Frisk is really Frisk. They are simply a blank slate for us. We CHOOSE their own actions. Frisk isn’t responsible for anything we do. Thats why Flowey tells us to let them be happy cause after the pacifist route they are somewhat free from our control. Again this is all MY personal opinion so your own ideas may actually be canon but this is just what I think.

Another thing about Sans. I think any correct portrayal of him is one that is straight-up depressed and nihilistic. I don’t know the extent of Sans’ understanding of his place in the universe, but if he understands that he’s a character in a video game, he probably understands, for example, that talk of emotional heartache and challenge would only get more people interested in doing a genocide run. And so, though he tries as hard as he can for the little glimmer of hope things will turn out ok, he knows the odds of the worse case scenario happening EVENTUALLY are massive.

i personally feel like even if your impression of sans is tainted by how the fandom portrays him, playing the game for the first time will even still perfectly set him up as a character, as even in his very first scene he's subverting the sort of expectation the fandom may have given you. starting out as serious, even a bit menacing, building up to the tension of him approaching you, until he reveals himself from the darkness with a whoopee cushion. it feels almost intended to subvert the expectation you may have gotten from all the fanart of him as this powerful, tragic character.

FINALLY SOMEONE WHO NOTICED MIRAGES TRUE NATURE!!! It may seem like I'm overreacting here, but Mirage is probably one of my favorite videogame characters of all time. He has so much depth and tragedy, yet hides it under a vale of fained confidence and tomfoolery. Everyone underestimates him and thinks hes weak. They look at his surface value without knowing how much hes been through and how much pain he's in. In spite of all of the suffering he goes through, he continues on. Not for himself, but for his mother. He can't let her lose her only son, and he can't let her forget him either. Its beautiful. Thats why even though Apex is a freaking sweaty royale game that I get my ass kicked in, and that it doesn't even focus on him. I still consider him one of- if not my favorite videogame character of all time.

Multiple characters throughout Undertale react like they've seen you before, or they think they might have, or have a feeling like they have after a basic reset. Toriel is a prime example when asking for your favorite flavor of pie. Flowey is the only one who truly remembers Loads and Resets (chara aswell), as he litteraly directly comments on them to you and even manipulates the files themselves at the end of the Neutral route. However, other characters like Alphys, Sans and even possibly Asgore can have at least knowledge of the existence of Loads and Resets. (Asgore acknowledges the fact he's "killed" you before if you talk to him, and Sans explains the timeline observations in his boss battle. With Alphys having notes and studies of DETERMINATION). in the case of Sans, he does not possess the memory qualities like Flowey does. He shares the same deja vu type experiences as most other characters in the game. In the boss battle, he reads your expression to see how many times you've supposedly died, but he always repeats his dialogue in the boss, which proves he has no memory of the encounter (Flowey, in his Asriel boss, the only one who does remember besides Chara, does not repeat dialogue after you're defeated, because he knows hes explained it to you already. And in other neutral routes, he repeats himself for the sake of simplicity, for the games sake. But he still comments on it). Sans reads your face, he doesnt remember. Flowey is also the only character to do something completely different in a second playthrough depending on what you do prior, such as straight up not appearing in the beginning if you kill him in the prior Neutral route, because he directly remembers, unlike the rest. not that hard to figure out if you dive into the lore and piece things together.

I know this has been a lot of the comments here LOL but yeah very glad that there are still some people who understand Sans in the right way. I've always liked and agreed with the idea that he isn't nice to Frisk solely because Toriel asked him to, but also partially because he wants to get on their good side so they will be kind and get the best ending possible. As much as people see his boss fight as this awesome serving of karmic justice that will finally stop your rampage, in reality it has prevented far less genocide routes than Sans's personality and likability. The number of times I've seen someone talking about how they quit genocide from not being able to beat Sans is very very low compared to all the times I've seen posts talking about not even wanting to start it or stopping at Papyrus because they don't have the heart to go through with it. By the time you get to the Sans fight its somewhat fun for a lot of players and Sans's fate is already sealed. Great video also! This was literally the reason Avi kept pushing for him. Avi has always been super nostalgic for 90s Spider-Man (hence why he pushed for Venom in SM3) and if you watch The Spot's episode there, you realize that despite being a joke character, neither Spider-Man nor Kingpin really have any real means of fighting him. The writers actually had to give him a love interest Kingpin could hold at gunpoint because he was too OP. His origin comic run had a similar problem when they realized the sheer effort it took for Spidey to land even a single punch against him, so they just wrote him to give up after getting hurt even once.

Because you'll probably never read, The wandering Inn (highly reccomend) has a character that fits into this archetype. Saliss. I'm kinda bad at explaining things, so bear within me. The setting is a high fantasy story with gnoll (wolf-dudes) and drakes (dragon's cousin, lizard dudes), obviously humans too, and on one side of this central conflict is a city and within one of the cities, is a complete goofball, named Saliss. In fact, this character is so off the wall, that the first time we see him in-story, he out-weirds the from-earth human protagonist where one of her biggest character trait is being odd. He's a nudist which is why he got arrested, and adventurer/alchemist so powerful, that he's named throughout the world (named adventurers being the highest class of adventurers), which is seemingly the reason he gets passes for his behavior. Throughout the entire story, you get the feeling that he's got his own shit going on, and he absolutely does, and not just being a pawn for his side of all of these conflicts. One great thing about the wandering inn is how it peels different characters apart layer by layer, and here that process is beautifully done. It's not so subtlely revealed that he can use his potions to turn into different forms. He has relations to lighter aspects of the criminal underbelly through speakeasies, or atleast, his "cousin does". He has relations to the highest authority in Pallass (the city this is all taking place in), and even though he gets bailed out and bails out the general, they always speak to eachother in sorrowful, regretful, and sometimes vile words, tons of context and history unknown to us. As it turns out, the guy who litterally wore nothing, with seemingly nothing to hide, nothing up his non-existent sleeves, was really a sleeve onto his own. He was a hero, but before he was a hero, he was daughter to the Manus's genius grand-stategist, the cyclops. Obviously looking through hindsight, that clearly didn't sit will with, soon-to-be, him. You see, there's word for what she is, she who loves other women while being such, a slur onto them, made specifically for this world, a turnscale. They, Onieva, used alchemy to turn themselves into a man. They turn back sometimes but at some point, they're both "them", and they both want to be expressed even if Saliss wants Onieva gone, the braggadocious "real him" she's always wanted to be, and the more strictly extroverted but less toxic "real her" he is underneath. If there's one thing that works with a funny character, depending on how you write and your work's length, giving them some of the most depth, can give them a role just as valuable as their comedy to hold on to, so that they can be more and function in the story more than that humble mask, making readers appreciate both sides more. Another thing I love about Mirage is that even though he acts goofy and feels incompetent, the Legends can really see his potential. There was a loading screen I believe for Season 3 where Bloodhound actually holds a lot of respect for Mirage because in the heat of battle, Mirage and his clones are really in their element. It kinda shows in the loading screen dialogue that regularly, Mirage is just a goofball, but when it’s down to the wire, Mirage is, in Bloodhounds words , a true warrior.

Personal favourite of mine who i believe falls into this category, Sokka from ATLA. He's often used as the go to comedic relief character but he is arguably the character who grows the most as a person among the main cast, ontop of being an amazing leader and strategist.

@@No.1RatedSalesman She does claim to have hid it from everyone, however in the game there are a few hints that Sans knew.(even though there are only 3, i think they are very solid) First, if you call Papyrus before entering Alphys lab from the first time, the conversation he has whit frisk somehow(i don´t remember the details) ends whit Papyrus aking if it means that there are dogs inside of the lab to wich Sans says: "I mean, i wouldn´t rule it out"(i want to say he said that while whinking, but that may just be my memory lying to me). Second, while on alphys lab if you call papyrus in front of the bag of dog food alphys has to feed the amalgamates(or at least the dog amagamate) Papyrus coments that he is sure he had seen that same bag on Sans room a few days ago. Finally, in Sans and Papyrus kitchen, on Sans side of their fridge, there is a singular half eaten bag of potato chips, there is only one place on the entire game were it is posible to get a bag of potato chips and that is the vending machine located inside the true lab.

I honestly agree with both you and the internets idea of sans. He knows all how saving reloading and resetting works, and that's why he tries all he can do to manipulate you, judge you, and give you the chance to go back and change. However, I do believe he is depressed simply because he's not like flowey. He cares about the underground, and therefore wants to protect it. But he realizes that the player actually can't be stopped, and a lot of gamers are 100%ers, or at the very least they wanna try everything. So even after they do the pacifist route, it's likely that they'll do the genocide route after. So he kinda has to mentally deal with the fact that even on a good ending, it may not be permanent.

What I find the most interesting is that this makes Sans the main antagonist of the game, the cycle of fourth wall breakers were in fact the main characters of the game, I always used to cut Sans out, but he's actually there too. Flowey, Us, Sans, Chara, it's all a circle, we are all antagonists of each others, but Sans being the main one because his duality with us starts from the beginning of the game and even beyond the end, the genocide is the one in which you win and defeat Sans, but... you instead let Flowey win. The Neutral is the one in which only You win, the pacifist is the one in which Sans wins... and the True Pacifist, in the complete experience of the game... He is a character that feels some sort of pain, (in the genocide route) but conceals it with his puns and funny manner. You can still care while being depressed. Take it from someone whose been for a while now. You don't suddenly become devoid of emotions, nor is it impossible to feel happy. Well, in most cases, at least. It just completely saps your motivations for... Anything. You don't wanna get out of bed in the morning. You don't wanna go to work. You don't wanna clean, or do the dishes, or... Well, anything, really. Even hobbies and activities you used to love just... Lose their appeal. Of course, you can't go telling everyone else you're depressed, and give them that burden. So you put on a smile that isn't always fake, you don't tell them how you feel, you just push forward. I'd certainly say Sans is depressed. He more or less spells it out in the final battle. Nothing really matters to him anymore, and this final battle is less a heroic last stand to save the world, and more a desperate last attempt at making you give up, reset, and leave the world in peace. One of his lines, "I can't afford not to care anymore", is more or less him pushing through that haze of demotivation to admit this isn't something he can ignore anymore. It's not a morning alarm that you shut off and go back to sleep. It's not a day of work you skipped. It's not a desk full of dishes that you can't bother to take to your kitchen. He HAS to deal with this. So yeah, I think he's QUITE depressed, if his mannerisms are anything to go by. Not the chronically depressed emo edgy boy that a lot of the Undertale fandom ends up portraying him as whenever they try to depict "Sans when he's not on screen", but depression comes in many shades, and I can certainly relate to the sentiment of "not wanting to do anything outside of my own interests."

He tries but ultimately he knows that you could just reset after he dies so he's more about "if you do this pls change your mind before it's too late, i know you'll beat me eventually". There's no point in fully snapping out of his non-caringness as you'll try again and again and again. Sure he'll make it hard he'll make it annoying but if you come back after 20 tries it doesn't really matter how hard he tries.

Sans is depressed, its in the game, you can also VERY CLEARLY notice it, he makes puns to make others happy to make up for his own lack of happiness, his character is chosen as a skeleton with this certain facial structure because the reason he smiles all the time resembles as a mask, he looks happy all the time, but deep deep inside, he's really not, and sense he can remember timelines, he knows you as the player, kill everyone, over and over, without remorse or regret, him, his brother, and all his friends, and then, you might make a pacifist route, and act like your saving everyone and everyone's free, but, Sans knows that their just gonna end back down there getting slaughtered continuously, agian, and agian, and he knows, no matter how much he tries, he can't do anything, but he still tries, kinda, even Toby Fox has said stuff that confirms this from what I know, someone I watched did a very full and perfect explanation on Sans's whole character, and even stuff around him like characters and feelings he or they have impacted him or he has impacted them, Sans is just way to cool of a character, is very, and I mean very, well made, I will also say, some of this stuff in this video are right about Sans, but some of it is wrong, but hey, who am I to Judge.

Id like to bring up another comic relief that may fit this. Jean Pierre polnareff, he's a guy who Acts all aloof but his reason for fighting is pretty serious. He also goes from happy looking to serious in the blink of an eye. He even ends up with one of the higher good guy kill counts in jojo killing almost all his opponents.
