Let's not beat around the bush - Bug types are known as one of the worst types in Pokemon History... but in Pokemon X and Y there's a good variety and some really unique ones to find as potential party members. Can we make the best of what we've got and use them to beat Pokemon Y's hardest challenge?!

We've done some hard Pokemon challenges in the past, but usually they were a solo Pokemon challenge run. What if we still did a really difficult challenge... but with a full team using hardcore nuzlocke rules, and with only one type? Today we find out: can I beat a Pokemon Y Hardcore Nuzlocke with only Bug types? No items and no overleveling!

Monotype Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
(1) If a Pokémon faints, it must be permanently boxed or released.
(2) Only the first type-specific Pokémon encountered in each Route/Area can be caught.
(3) No Legendaries/Mythicals, duplicates, or same-evolution-line Pokémon can be caught or used. If a duplicate is encountered, the next unique type-specific Pokémon encounter can be caught.
(4) Additional Pokémon may be caught for the purpose of HM use, but these may not be used in battle at any time during the run.
(5) No Items can be used in battle (Held Items are allowed).
(6) Party Pokémon levels are limited to the highest level Pokémon of the next Gym Leader or Elite 4 Member. So long as your Pokémon are at or below the level cap when the Gym Leader/Elite 4 Member battle starts, they can level up mid-battle.
(7) "Set" Battle Mode must be used at all times.
(8) No connecting with other games for the purposes of importing Pokémon, Items, etc.

What I loved most about X and Y is that they didn't create too many new mons, so they just brought in pretty much every other one, making almost any replay to be completely unique. Like you can get three dragon types before the second gym, how cool

You could've got a Durant on the route you mentioned the shuckle on and then tried for shuckle or ariados in both Terminus Cave and Victory Road; essentially guaranteeing an extra encounter.

6:55 I personally make an addendum to my runs that if I get a Pokemon that only evolves as a certain gender (Combee, Salazzle, etc), I can reroll it until I get one that's able to evolve. Getting an encounter that's only good 1/8 of the time just isn't fun

Fun fact, there was a tournament with all of the gym leaders, rivals, main antagonists, and champions. There was something over 1000 trainers in it and Viola made it towards the top 8 and Roxanne got second to Cynthia who beat Steven Stone to 3rd. So yeah, it’s surprising but bug types have started to really start to get good.

Nice run! It sometimes feels like Bug didn't come into its own as a type until Gen 7 (but is still pretty weak) so anything before then is an even bigger accomplishment.

From since Gen 1 there’s been a bug type with effectively 500 base stat total Gen 1 scyther and pinsir gen 2 heracross and Scizor Gen 3 ninjask (only 456 I think but very good in competitive with baton pass, speed boost, substitute and swords dance) Gen 4 yanmega, Gen 5 exploded with bugs with genesect and volcarona and other strong bugs like crustle with shell smash and scolipede with speed boost….

Bug Pokémon were originally meant to help trainers out in the early game since they evolve so quickly…. You get a fully evolved Pokémon at level 10 but they give them middle evolution base stats… the movepools are also real life bug interactions like the powder moves to cause status….

When it comes to runs like this, I consider the starter a gift pokemon That I can use as a token to catch another pokemon in a route, so I can get a starter replacement and a first catch with my real starter or save it till I get to an area with multiple of the type im trying to use in that specific run. Same with the starter the prof gives you after you battle him that becomes a token mon. And the mega lucario and the legendary (cause you have to catch it or you can't go forward with the story) get the token treatment also. And in games like soul silver with the bug catch contest thats a freebee and in safari zone as you can change up the areas one pokemon in each location

I think introducing an "evo clause" could be a good idea. "If an encounter cannot evolve, you may reroll until you get a version of it that can" Basically. If you get a combee as an encounter, and it's male, you can reroll until you get a female combee. I see a lot of big runs but almost none of them use vespiqueen so I think it would be neat to see some less used Pokemon be used.
