Thank you very much for your posting. The information will be saving me a lot of grief on an repair I am attempting. Your knowledge and advice given to the young man was worth more than the cost of the parts. However, it was very kind of you to replace the parts at no cost. Nice to run into a posting like this from time to time.

Thanks for the vid. It made the process more clear to me on the difference of High Temperature Flux which must be for brazing and not soldering.Very helpful for backyard machinist !!

I'd like to thank you for explaining the differences between the two methods! I realize this video has been up for years already, but good advice and instruction is timeless! 50 odd years ago, my dad did me a huge favor by instilling in me the idea of "Say what you mean and mean what you say!". Don't make people guess what you trying to communicate. The same goes for handwriting. Make it legible and intelligible. Perhaps then there would be fewer corrections and apologies and way less people saying "You know what I mean / what I'm saying?" When I hear that, it makes me wonder if they really know! Thanks again. Peace.

I have used Harris 15 for silver brazing and Stay-Silv white flux, works great on bronze, stainless, cast iron. And even some sterling silver like dining room stuff for silver brazing. I have also used plumbing solder, (not lead) and acid flux for fixing cracks in cast iron parts and manifolds (not exhaust). I put the cast parts in an oven at 350 then lay them in dry sand to help keep in the heat so they dont crack.

Viewer beware, things might be different in your country. In many parts of the world, what is described in this video as silver brazing is called silver soldering and what this described as silver soldering is called soft soldering. Brazing is done with brass as filling material. As explained in the video, temperature and silver content of the filling material is the key difference. Labels and names aren't consistent world wide.

good info,,i recently fabricated a jeweler mini torch (actually smaller tip than jewelers use) that runs on oxy/prop and i wanted to see if i could solder or braze steel with it,so i got two short pieces of 1/16" steel wires and found what looks like 1/16" silver brazing wires as well as some flux from my dad's stuff,,i was having too many problems with the silver balling up and too much heat oxidizing everything so i did some research online and realized a few things like having the right flux which is typically made from boric acid,borax etc,i figured the flux i had might have been for tin soldering,,,i got some boric acid from a bottle of pest killer(100%boric acid) and made a bit of a paste with water and put it between the rods,cut a small rod of the silver and put it on top as the paste helped bind all parts together,then used a small flame(carburising to neutral) and it started burning the flux then heating the rods till they got almost red white hot before the ball of silver wet out and melted in between the rods,,the finish looked great but when i tried repeating the process i did not get the same easy exp,,lots of crud and back stuff so i tried to heat it up hoping to redistribute the silver nicely but it turned into a golden then dark color and more crud,,i diped it in the paste and tried again,it helped ,,,i guess what the flux does aside from helping absorb and wet the silver is also to remove the impurities

It is called Black Flux. Black Flux is the official name. It is made by Lucas Milhaupt, Prince & Izant and, I believe, Superior. We sell it if that helps.

Hi. Thanks for clarifying the differences. But I still have problems when I look for the brazing flux. Please let me know what brand of flux do you use, and if possible the part number? thank you kindly.

+Paul Castro Hi Paul, we typically use our Purified Flux for brazing. This type of flux has undergone extra processing steps to remove most of the large and small particles thus creating a stronger braze joint. If you would like more information feel free to visit our website at www.carbideprocessors.com. Type "flux" in the search box located in the top left-hand corner of the screen to go to the webpage.

The L in solder is actually silent.
@pixelpatter01
@pixelpatter01 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, here in the US where the man who made the video lives, it's silent. I've heard Brits and Australians pronounce the l though. I'm not sure why it's so irritating to have someone from Great Britain make a comment attempting to correct our pronunciation of Aluminum or solder. If they don't like it they can bugger off.
