Blair, regarding your opening comment about KZbin, here is my take. I'm an auto mechanic, and I prefer to do non-engine stuff. (My hands stay cleaner.) Pulling the inner door panels off on a car, the first thing I do, is watch a KZbin video. Yes, simple job, but by watching the video, I will find out what is a pop-out part, or a hidden bolt part. Some cars have a hook, so you have to lift the panel up, instead of pulling out. And, you can't see those hidden designs, without reading the book, (like I have 2000 books) or watching a video. Oh, you are RIGHT! KZbin is a GREAT tool! steve

Glenn: You got me recalling, a large hollow silver maple. I was going to piece it down, so the road not would have to be closed. I was about three quarters into the first cut. Grey squirrels started looking up out of hole, seeing a human ABOVE them, panicking and jumping. The line holders claimed the squirrels jumped at them. The crew dropped the lowering lines and ran. Now I have an ten inch brach ready to drop, without any control,l plus the lines are hanging straight down into the drop zone. Fortunately one groundling recognized the danger and grabbed the lines with a long pole saw. Remembering those squirrels makes me smile.

I thought decay always went down the tree. Your video shows decay can travel both directions. People always want their urban forest to be around forever. All living things eventually die. We only hasten this end with improper watering, restricting root footprints, and improper maintenance. We plead to keep it going for just a little bit longer with cables to support, and ever more drastic pruning to lighten. Maybe it is time to say plant the right type of new tree and let nature take its course with the old one.

The largest silver maple in my yard is just as big as this one, but a little taller. I saw lots of dead branches in this tree. The upper canopy of ours looked similar but many of them were small and have already fell off. It's not around anything so it poses no threat to anything. It was planted in 1964 and was likely a seedling in 1960. It does have some areas of decay but it's still fairly solid. We also have a little silver maple that is the same age but it's trunk is only about 10 inches. It's growing under a large red leaf maple and another silver maple, so it doesn't grow much. It's as full and green as the other trees. Just doesn't get much sunlight. I think grandpa didn't realize how big the trees would get.

Silver Maples are the reason I follow your channel. My house has two large ones (assuming around the age of the house ,33 yrs). I cut one of the large braches at the bottom on both trees when I bought the house 10 years ago. I only wanted to clean up and make it presentable. Both cuts developed rot over the years. I've made other cuts in the canopy to allow more sun light to the grass and those have healed up well. They are not easy to work alone since you have to keep changing your anchor position as you move from branch to branch. These trees are the reason I bought tree climbing gear. I need to do more work on them but my back has deteriorated over the years. Wish I had oaks.

I just moved to South Carolina and have a water oak and a willow oak in my backyard. Both are huge. The water oak in like this maple. It grows fast and has a shorter life span. Found a good arborist out here. The removal is prohibitive in cost and since it’s on a slope, a crane is not feasible. We are going to trim the problem branches first, in December when tree service is cheaper. We also are analyzing the soil around the other oak to encourage health. Watch all your videos. Love them.

My inlaws have a big silver maple in their back yard. Its way bigger than that. We are in Ontario Canada. We had a very good arborist take some dead out of it and its solid now. Maybe have to do something again in 10 or 15 years or so.

I have 2 silver maples in my front yard. Since the house was build in 1998, I'm guesstimating that both are about 25 years old. Neither tree is that big to me but both are always dropping dead limbs. One is in a part of the yard that slopes and has visible surface roots running through the yard and make it hard to mow that part of the yard. The other has a few surface roots but they are barely visible and don't create any problems with mowing. However, that one always seems to have boxelder bugs in it.

But, really, an amazing job, decent photography for the time, and an impressive investment on your part in putting that together. One of the guys at work cut into a carpenter bee nest during his evaluation in a silvermaple. The entrance was on the underside of the branch so he didn't see it. It was midday and hot so the bees weren't active to give any indication of a nest. He got swarmed and quickly bailed out. Grabbed a can of bee-bop and went back up.

I have 3 silver maples in my front yard. The Neighbors on both sides of me have 2 each. They are also in our backyards. We guesstimate that they were planted in the 60's, 70's, and the ones in the backyards in the 80s. They are all in various states of Decay and just today we were looking at one which has a family of baby squirrels running around the top and then in another branch on the same tree there are two red headed woodpeckers that have made a new home. It's completely frustrating though because to cut these trees down would not just require a great amount of time and effort and money, but it would leave all of our houses completely exposed to Sun, Wind, and Rain. This of course is a very popular idea according to all of the solar panel companies that keep relentlessly calling me three times a week to get me to benefit in federal rebate programs... once they see how many trees we have they say that it would be a horrible idea to put solar panels on the roof. Again telemarketers. I was never seeking to put solar panels up or cut down my trees. Now I feel very frustrated because the trees seem to be in various states of poor health and in the past 10 or 12 years I haven't had a single arborist come over and tell me a productive or positive thing to do to help them. Not a single person has suggested to spray for carpenter ants, to do any sort of injections. Nothing. I imagine this is exactly how people feel when they're told to get a total hysterectomy. I can't even begin to imagine my house without a single tree in the yard.

Birb Girb sealing pruning wounds have been proven to be of no value and can actually cause more problems. Best to just let dry out. Better, not to make large wounds.

This popped up as recommended video in a very timely fashion! I have several Silver Maples that were planted when the house was built about the time you say you started your business. Branches are dropping all over the place! Almost all of them are either dead, or hollowed. At some time the tree out front was topped. I have very narrow crotches, multiple growths on the old topping wounds, and one where the tree was so severely pruned by the people clearing the utility right of way, the main stem has died, leaving a very unbalanced tree, with bark starting to slough off all around the base. That one is coming down soon. This is a very informative video which I will be watching over and over while I try to make decisions about these trees. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. PS, do you make house calls to the Midwest? (One can dream!)

In spite of all the hurricanes we get in Louisiana I'm about to plant 2 Silver maples in my yard that I grew from seed. They won't pose a threat to houses or Vehicles "When" some future hurricane blows them down. In the meantime I will enjoy the silver leaves.

Acer Lambada and if you find decay, you still need to make a decision. Knowing the extent of a decay pocket is almost impossible with an increment Borer. The resitigraph or Tomograph are better options but expensive.

It's kinda too bad because Silver maple are a beautiful tree but they are just too brittle, the silver and red maple mix "freeman maple" are a better tree for your backyard, less brittle and have less shallow roots. Silvers are fine before they get massive, and then they are even dangerous. We had a massive silver maple in a park at the local courthouse and it showed no signs of weakness, one day one of the massive trunks broke off, all of a sudden, it could've easily killed someone. It wasn't even a windy day.

Thank you sir, I very much appreciate the arborist methodology as to what you are doing and why you are doing so and as to what affect the verity of tree actually has on how all said above directly affects the longevity of a tree and growth of a tree while you even go the extra mile to show on branches dissection that have fallen already due to storm damage as to how healthy the tree is and or unhealthy it is and or in this case owning the early missions you have made which one could consider to be failures. However, the fact you have learned very much from your own mistakes that they no longer can be considered to be that and instead were a learning experience for you or growing situation you have gained a different understanding for the different specific trees needs are. Which I greatly appreciate and respect you for that purpose as most of society currently would rather deny anything that would by others be considered to be a mistake, mishap, or even a situation that was a failure and most would assume denial even at the expense of creating the Same errors years upon years into the future of which I have always owned my mistakes, my failures and mishaps as the only way that one is capable of knowing first hand certain things is to have a sense of trial and error of which corrections are made and it becomes a different situation all together as now it is a learning situation in which over countless research hours were not exposed to the specific situations or information that through one’s trials and tribulations can be made to be a positive from what had been a negative. Hey also if ever you have some 200T that stop running altogether and decide you want to switch over to the 201t now that the Mtronics have been worked through and seem to not hold a error please let me know as I am looking for an extremely tired or dead 200T that I am able to port and rebuild provided it had not blown up and it it has I will gladly pick up parts as they become available on eBay so I am able to build a 200T. I have plenty of chainsaws an three top handle arborist saws for just myself while other saws are for woodcarving and timber made furniture I carve while even having a 661R-mag but have always wanted to get a 200T they just had a brand new 200T used once and put back in original box that was on eBay for $1200 and I kick myself daily for not selling a couple Husqvarna and or one of my 201t to get that saw even though it was priced much higher then when it was purchased I spent 800 on two different 201T and knowing how much better the 200t is said to be especially when ported and polished with an exhaust system upgrade an a timing advance is said to just absolutely rip with a 20” mini tip or dime tip bar on a 1/4” sprocket which I have switched one of my 201t I use for climbing with a dime tip and 1/4 sprocket conversion and it is pretty much a different saw then with the stock bar and chain after doing the mtronics reset. I heard you mention that the 200 you were using in this video was becoming tired and realistically I would gladly pay good cash or even trade for a tuned 194t or even a running strong 455 or 240 Husqvarna that run hot and are set up for carving for a tired old 200t I can use as a base platform to build a saw on. Once again thank you sir for the information and knowledge you have given and the segments like when in your office and looking at the veneer do you have a different channel for your woodworking and veneer or is it all on the one channel and just look in your videos or playlists section?

Yes. Most decay in trees is directly associated with pruning wounds. A chainsaw causes large wounds and often too close. Retain the branch bark ridge but some species, like the Silver Maple, decays faster and worse than others.

Hi Blair, as you said...its only the guys who want to learn will view. You are already in a niche with limited scope, ie tree care. You also nailed it when you indicated that viewers like entertainment. And thats what this TV is all about, entertainment. So I guess what you need to do now is to think of how you can add some "entertainment" to the more serious stuff. Reminds of this indian preacher who used humor to get his sermons across. In a way I do like the silver maple tree being at my old house I used live at but also I do think with the seeds they are pretty to grow but the sad thing is like he have mentioned in this video these trees do rot fast. Now I'm just thinking being these trees do rot faster if in some ways these trees will be good to bring back nutrients back to the soil being it almost seems like within ten to 20 years the tree will be almost gone back to the earth

Sliver maple only live on average about 100 to 120 yrs. I got sliver maple in my backyard about 15yr old tree its nice shades my house already taller than power lines. Which the back has to get cut off every year, heals quite quickly.

I have 65 year old silver maple in my yard that are half rotted and hollow that I'm taking down, they also have blight, black fungle spots on all the leafs, if I say planted a red maple replacement will it get sick from the old trees?

Alex Engebos The black fungal spots on the leaves are not harmful to the tree, only to the aesthetics. If you want to get rid of it you need to properly deal with all the leaves that have fallen every year. As do your neighbors if they are showing the same issue.

I have a quadruple trunk Silver maple one of the trunks were taken down a few years ago because of a storm now the cut part is pretty much black in the Center. Is forming a hole which is basically breaking apart like a wine cork I’m realizing all the leaves have holes in it and black spots I think the tree is about over 100 years old do you think it’s time for her to come down I live near a school God for bid anything happens bad. Silver maples are beautiful trees. But yes they do tend to decay if pruned. We have 1 as big as this 1. Its lost a few limbs due to decay or they died, then fell off. Some of those spots have started to decline, but not terribly, yet. It's not endangering anything if it has a failure. A few others we have that haven't been pruned are doing much better. Left alone they are very nice trees

Its just 1 of the trees I worry about. In front of the house there's a large birch tree. Used to be a twin trunk. About 10 - 15 years ago my grandpa cut one of them off. The stump quickly rotted away, then that side of the tree's roots. Now it's spreading to the remaining trunk, which has a decay pocket from a removed branch, and a crack going up the trunk. It needs to be removed before it fails. Out back there's a large tree that is almost 3 feet across trunk. Its completely hollow up and down the entire trunk. Has a crack going up the trunk, pretty good sized. A few years back we put some threaded rods through the trunk, maybe 6 or so, with large washers to keep it from opening up during the bitter cold winter days. Its beautiful, but eventually it too will have to go. Both of them would likely hit the house if they fail. Unfortunately my dad loves the 1 tree too much to remove it, even though it's a hazardous tree. He does recognize the birch needs to go, it gets worse each year.

I've seen these trees fail without pruning when it has multiple leaning trunks, which this species often does. Limbs and trunks tear off in weather events and decay. It's a gamble with this tree. Some live to a great old age, many fail.

Overplanted? No, there seems to be a good diversity of species being planted here. Because our climate is so favorable, the selection of species that survive here is numerous. Our biggest problem is lack of water and high cost of water.

Caring for a silver maple near a house - Plant a 12' Red maple (Acer rubrum) and an Oak (Quercus alba) nearby with 400+ yr. lifespans then in 5 - 10 years cut the silver maple down. Silver maples have weak branches habits and most decline after 50 years.

Well...for just about anything maybe you cant find a video. I am looking for a video that would in detail explain how to cut a tree canopy shorter. I found lot of videos of guys doing it, guys even showing how to cut a branch shorter but a guide to cut big and old crowns shorter is hard to find. Lets say I have a oak (quercus robur) and I am told to reduce it 15%. That usually means weight so well dry and sick branches make up lets say 4% and then i have to cut all branches somewhat shorter. So I need a video how to plan crown reducing. Usually we need to make lifting up cut and then overall shortening cut. If u have made a video like this i would love to watch it

Tme to get out the bat, and metal rod, and find out the depth of those heartwood failures, and take remedial action for those portions that are truly dangerous (1+ foot of internal rott). I am still of the ancestral opinion to paint those cuts that are bigger than 1 inch, as they will never truly be able to re-grow and seal up their cuts, and any water/bugs/bacterial infections only create these continued decaying situations.

I'm not a Silver Maple fan....I don't like the roots the way they make the yard rough to mow across, and besides, they aren't even pretty in the Fall, like the Red Maple and Sugar Maples are. I have cut down a couple of Silvers in my yard and I have another one that is in the wrong spot that doesn't do anything for me...like make me breakfast...!! Not to worry...I have probably close to 100 other trees in my front & back yard and along the fence line...I will not miss it.

So, I just bought 10 silver maple seedlings. What I want do do is find a maple tree I can pollard. Then take the yearly growth mulch it for making Lions Mane grow bags. I am worried the sliver maples won't take to getting topped very well. I was thinking about treating the wood with propolis, bees wax or both. Thoughts? Is there a fast growing maple that can take yearly cut backs? Thanks for any help.

"viral" has nothing to do with word-of-mouth. if the youtube robots don't push your video, you won't get beyond the 1,000 level. youtube "popularity" has nothing to do with hard work, nor # of subscribers; very few people follow the youtube subs page, which is also why youtuber channels have to push this "enable the bell" thing. If all ppl used their subs page, nobody would need the bell/notifications.
