Never understnd why wagon's & coach's didn't have a flip up of 2" White Oak planks or 1/4" steel plate barrier 2ft high with to not get shot in the back, that folds down when not needed...!

Yes , exactly - good idea. I myself have asked friends why the boys climbing up Omaha Beach and Tarawa Beach didn't have a simple hunk of steel to hold in front of them for that 100 yards. It's called a shield, and even if a 50 cal would go through it, it would be far less lethal, an almost-spent round, especially at the far distances. The new-tech book Brass maybe said: "Too old-fashioned, not modern, too heavy", but I guarantee a whizzing bullet or two would galvanize super-fit young men with plenty of energy to lift 20 or 30 lbs for 150 yards to save your life till they got cover or dug one..
