I'm 78 and watched this when I was about five. Fell in love with the pipes and so at 15 (underage) I joined the Toronto Scottish Regiment. After three years with the Tor Scots I joined the regular army for a 31 year career. I think this movie was the pivotal moment that set my future in place. To this day I still enjoy the pipes & drums.

This is my first time watching this film. It's truly a classic in my opinion. One of the most heartbreaking scenes though is when the dog is trying to lead Chris to his lost family. That's honestly heartbreaking. But the way Chris deals with the issue compared to Abby. Is masterful the way he tries to tell her don't look and tells her to go back. As he's digging the grave. Is just what a true man to do. We don't see stuff like that anymore in movies. My favorite part though is when she's crying after seeing the bodies and holding the dog. She basically says that it's hopeless. But Chris like a true man comes back with basically that it's not hopeless. The storytelling the characters all of this is something that Hollywood today can't possibly do. At least this is all my opinion. This is now up there in my top five favorite movies. Thank you for uploading this God bless you all.

They cause me to have nightmares.Refuse to watch horror. As for sad heartbreaking movies I can cry all through them. But, find it hard to cry about worries in real life. Guess that's my release. Probably because as a child it was, What you crying about, I'll give you something to cry about. My sister had the same problem. Who in their right mind smacks/ whips a hurt child to make them stop crying? ... This is a great movie. Shows strength, compassion for others, people knew if you lived you'd die as sure as you are born. Didn't have time to waste. We still have corruption in power these Days.

One of the really *True Classics....!!!* Such a well scripted, complex interpersonal drama laced through the equally "notorious" setting of our pre-American Revolution history. The Iroquois Nation was equally well represented, and where the entire costuming throughout the film was perhaps only outdone by this endlessly Sterling Cast. To this day, the scene of Boris Karloff being 'tricked' by the magnetic compass is still one of my favorite movie scenes Of All Time!!!
@elmagodelmaryahoo4 жыл бұрын
PS: And the filming locations throughout the movie are "delicious" TOO!!! Apparently, most of film was shot in the forests of Pennsylvania and Idaho's rugged Snake River, where even this film print copy of only 480p is still rather "crisp".... and where the _'saturated'_ though 'tangibly realistic' Beautiful *Technicolor* takes this aged film to a wonderful level of "believability". THX Mucho, Westerns - Wild West for this very memorable upload = Always a pleasure to watch!!

I love Gary Cooper during a particular time of his career. Back in the ‘30s when he first started making movies, most of his roles were on the ‘goofy’ side. But as he became seasoned, his looks were more endearing & his acting matured. He still held a hidden talent for humor but it became a controlled trait he used to his benefit. I found him increasingly handsome ~ my attraction for his acting ‘grew on me’ ~ he no longer acted in parts that portrayed him as a weakling or a big tall dummy. It’s no wonder Gary Cooper became one of the best actors of his time & was soo widely sought after during the ‘40s when the motion picture industry made the best films/movies ever! (~ in my opinion). He eventually lost his sensuous attractiveness, but he never lost his integrity for acting with distinction & talent, and oftentimes a touch of humor!

Actually, Cooper started acting in the 1920s. He had a small, showy part in the very first winner of the Academy Awards for Best Picture, "Wings" in 1927. He was the flyer who offered Richard Arlen and Buddy Rogers some chocolate before going on a flying mission.

The action in this movie takes place in 1760s. When the assembled men were discussing whether the land beyond the Alleghenies was safe for settlers, Ward Bond stood up and said that the land is replete with coal and iron which, he said, can be smelted into steel. However, steel wasn't invented until the 1850's by British inventor, Henry Bessemer.
@hk_8024 жыл бұрын
Steel usage has been dated back to Roman times, possibly even earlier. What Bessemer did was make a manufacturing process that could mass produce it inexpensively.
@lynn15053 жыл бұрын
Steel production and implementation can be traced back almost 4,000 years to the start of the iron age.
@thepandeslar8062 Жыл бұрын
Hmmm . . . steel has been around for centuries. what Mr. Bessemer invented was the 'Open Hearth' furnace, making possible the production of steel in large quantities.
@davidhimmelsbach55710 ай бұрын
@@thepandeslar8062 No, he invented his 'Bessemer Converter' -- Carnegie adopted the open hearth furnace after gaining success with Bessemer's design. The open hearth design -- of the 19th Century -- used locally produced bricks and masons. Whereas the Bessemer Converter required high quality iron and steel. Today's basic oxygen furnaces actually hail back to Bessemer's design. So you can see that the industry has bounced back and forth as to what works best.

The film ends with a quote from Ben Franklin, "Where liberty dwells, that is my country." To which Thomas Paine replied, "Where it does not, that is mine." There weren't many that could one up a quote from Ben. Thomas Paine then traveled to France to assist in their revolution.

DeMille was a master of taking obscure minor North American historical incidents and making huge cinematic masterpieces surrounding them. This (Pontiac's revolt) and Northwest Mounted Police (North-West Rebellion) are two such examples.
@bluskies10005 жыл бұрын
Pontiac's Rebellion was not obscure until the twentieth century, and impacted Americans behavior with native Americans through most of the nineteenth century. Read the almost hidden history "The Conspiracy of Pontiac and the Indian War after the Conquest of Canada", From the Spring of 1763 to the Death of Pontiac Francis Parkman This is the best account of that war, but difficult to find, as our Progressives have tried to deeply bury it. It interferes with their revised historical accounts.
@gingerli58204 жыл бұрын
@@bluskies1000 Thanks so much for the cite. I've never read any of Francis Parkman's work but he seems to have a great deal of respect from his readers. It's quite true - the seeds of revolution were sown by the conflicts with the natives after the Seven Years' War concluded. The crown wanted expansion west stopped, quite contrary to what the frontier colonists wanted. The resentment was bound to build. Parkman's books, in two volumes, are indeed hard to find.

The 'big, dumb Indian' who can barely put two English words together is laughable, or would be if it weren't so insulting.
